Islay isn’t known as Scotland’s whisky Island for nothing..

The history of whisky on Islay goes way back to the 1300s when Irish monks are said to have brought distillation to the island. Over the centuries, the fertile island became a popular location for whisky production. The government introduced taxation on Scotch whisky in 1644. However, the taxes were not enforced on Islay until the late 1700s, so there were many “illicit stills” set up in remote locations. The first legal distillery was registered in 1779. This was Bowmore Distillery, which is still running to this day.

The Wee House at Port Ellen is the perfect base from which to explore the distilleries, plus if you like Scotland when it’s quiet, now is a perfect time to visit.

This is the shop in the box!

A very special honesty box on the Isle of Islay, Scotland.

Dotted around the Scottish countryside, honesty boxes are a heartwarming tradition reflecting the trust and community spirit of rural life.

This practice not only supports the local community but also fosters a sense of integrity and mutual respect among residents and visitors.

The idea to create The Shop in the Box came from a student at Port Ellen Primary.

Pupils were tasked with coming up with an idea for the Social Enterprise Academy and ran a “Dragons Den” style Competition.

One of the pupil’s won and received £100 seed funding to transform this phone box into a shop.

The profits made through this social enterprise are donated to Port Ellen Primary School, the RSPB and South Islay Development.

If you pay a visit, please be honest and generous.

It was a fantastic evening at Port Ellen’s Bonfire and Firework display last night!

The skies above North Bay beach were lit up as the local community on Islay gathered and enjoyed some fantastic home baking, soup, hot dogs and of course some wee drams of whisky.

The evening is hosted by the amazing . A community led organisation who strive to make positive changes to the communities of Islay and Jura.

We can’t wait to do it again next year!

Here’s 5 facts about Islay!

1: is known as “Queen of the Hebrides”, a magnificent isle with fertile land, abundant wildlife and a long and fascinating history.

2: It’s the fifth-largest Scottish island
Islay is around 620 square kilometres in area, making it the fifth-largest of over 700 Scottish islands. It is also the eighth-largest island in the British Isles. The island has a population of just over 3,000.

3:There were prehistoric settlers on Islay
There is evidence of hunter-gatherers on Islayfrom around 10,000 BC, at the end of the Ice Age and into the Mesolithic Period. Archaeologists have discovered Ice Age tools and Mesolithic artefacts on the island. In fact, some of the earliest items were uncovered by a herd of pigs in 2015!

4: It was the seat of the Lords of the Isles
Finlaggan on Islay was the seat of the Lords of the Isles and Clan Donald, from the 12th to the 15th century. A powerful clan, which controlled much of the Highlands and islands. The small islands of Eilean Mòr and Eilean na Comhairle, within Loch Finlaggan, formed the Lords’ headquarters.

5: It’s famous for its smokey whiskies
This peaty land is what gives Islay whisky its distinctive quality. Distillers use dried peat to smoke the barley, producing a unique, smokey flavour. There are nine working distilleries on the island, and whisky production is one of the main industries here, along with farming, fishing and tourism.
