Doyden Castle

Doyden Castle A small National Trust holiday property, located on the cliffs overlooking Lundy bay.
(7)

Many people dream of living in a castle, high up on the cliffs, regally surveying the ocean or stepping out through Gothic archways onto the springy turf and looking down from their citadel onto the valley below. Happily, the National Trust has made this dream a possibility and Doyden Castle is about as close to a fantasy destination as you could imagine. In fact, despite its crenellated tower and

arched windows, this building is neither a true castle nor a folly. It was built in about 1830 as a kind of pleasure house by an infamous and wealthy bon-viveur from Wadebridge called Samuel Symons. Here he would entertain his friends to nights of feasting, drinking and gambling (the ample wine-bins in the cellar survive to this day). It's chequered history only adds to the dramatic experience of staying in this little fortress on the edge of the cliffs.

It may not be a ‘real’ castle, but with arched windows and a crenelated tower, we’re pretty sure after a night’s stay at Doyden Castle you really won’t care.

Looked after by the National Trust originally Doyden was built as a pleasure house in around 1830 for bon-viveur Samuel Symons. Symons hosted nights of feasting here, and with its enviable clifftop location and access to beautiful beaches, we’re sold on the fantasy.

Sunrise at Doyden Castle (Castle on the right) with Atlantic ocean views. Such a beautiful landscape here. The location some would say is more suited for sunset being on the north coast. I do however like this composition and soft tones front lit from the oncoming sunrise giving soft pink and blue hues. I also hope to return one day to see these rolling hills bathed in golden hour sunset light from across the sea...

I would love to stay here on a stormy night too.. not sure I'd get much sleep but it would be pretty exhilarating! It's fully booked until March 2025 though, best hop on their mailing list...

Enjoy wet and windy walking at this time of year and don't be suprised to see a wave or two like this on the North Cornwall Coast Path.
This wave is at the entrance to Port Quin and was taken a few years back by my daughter when we were walking to Port Isaac.
Did you know that the name Port Quin has nothing to do with Manfred Mann's Earth Band's "Mighty Quinn" song but is a corruption of the Cornish 'Porth Gwynn' meaning 'white cove'. Maybe something to do with the corn that was being shipped out of Roscarrock Farm up the road and the surrounding fields covered sometimes in straw.
Port Isaac's Cornish name is Porthysek meaning "corn port" and suprisingly has nothing to do with Isaac the son of Abraham and Sarah, the father of Jacob, and the grandfather of the twelve tribes of Israel!
Forget all that when walking and perhaps focus on the big white waves that can storm the entrance to Port Quin at this time of year!
