The committee and Volunteers of PHT are deeply saddened by the sudden death of our Friend, amazing committee member and dedicated volunteer Jimmy Johnston. Our whole team thought the absolute world of Jimmy and he will be missed very much by all of us. For those who attend our events in Carleton Street Orange Hall and Heritage Centre, Jimmy was the first person many would meet at the door with a warm welcome, chat and direction. Always on hand to help out where he could. Jimmy was also a well known face on many of our tours ensuring everyone had a safe visit.
Behind the scenes he was a dedicated committee member, who offered his help where ever he could to the planning and set up of our day to day operations. We greatly appreciated the amount of time and help that Jimmy so willingly offered to PHT and Carleton Street Orange Hall.

We send our sincere condolences to the entire family circle at this very sad and difficult time. You are all in our thoughts and prayers for the difficult days ahead.

We regret to inform you of the recent death of Jimmy JOHNSTON

Final Day for Ulster Scots Summer Camp Class of 2024 🎉

It was trip day to finish off the week 🚌
First stop was a visit to Stormont which included an impromptu sitting of a few future politicians in the making. Our thanks to Jonathan Buckley MLA and team for sponsoring the visit and helping to organise it. Special mention to our guide Shannon who had a lot of questions put her way 😅 But with lots of knowledge and patience was able to answer all of them.
We had an explore of the grounds around Stormont including a visit to the tomb of Sir James Craig.

To burn off some energy we had a short stop at the Play Park, before leaving Stormont and heading to the Museum of Orange Heritage.
The kids throughly enjoyed their workshops with David and Jonathan covering the Battle of the Boyne and the First World War. Our thanks to the museum for also providing a room for everyone to enjoy their packed lunches.

We would just like to say a massive thank you to our Volunteers this week, who very kindly give up their time to help out, including on their days off work. We cannot thank the team enough this week for all their hardwork and the months of preparation that goes into organising the camp. This year’s camp was the biggest yet and we had to recruit more volunteers. Members of Portadown Women's Cultural Friendship were first in the queue to offer their help to us.
We genuinely appreciate all our volunteers and simply couldn’t do it without all your commitment.

We would also like to place on record our sincere thank to the generous funding from the Ulster-Scots Agency which makes the summer camp possible and also to Schomberg Mourne UlsterScots for all their help this year with tutors and a variety of workshops. Thank you to all the tutors from throughout week.

We hope all the Kids throughly enjoyed their week and with the variety on offer we definitely had something for everyone. Lots of learning but also lots of fun, games and friendship along the way.

Day 4 at Ulster Scots Summer Camp 🎉

Big Thank you to the team at Schomberg Mourne UlsterScots who joined us today, leading excellent workshops in Living History and Language. We very much appreciate the team making the journey today and for all their help.

It was a bit more of messy afternoon with baking, arts, crafts and games.

It’s the final day tomorrow which means Trip Day 🚌 ~ Just a reminder that the bus will leave Carleton Street Orange Hall at 9:00am sharp we recommend arrival by 8:45am. It’s a tight schedule for tours so we will have to leave on time. Don’t forget packed lunches also 🥪

The summer camp is kindly funded by the Ulster-Scots Agency. Big Thank you to Gary from the Ulster Scots Agency who visited today with some goodie bags.

Day 3 was a busy one 🎉

We started off with a Drum Major Workshop this morning, with the talented tutor and Ulster Champion Emma Barr who put them through their paces🙌 (It was also Emma’s Birthday today so an extra big thank you for coming along and a very Happy Birthday Emma 🥳

Then it was on to the snare drumming workshop with excellent tutor,Joshua, of Pride of Ballinran Flute Band. Big thank you to Joshua for coming along and showcasing his talents. We definitely have some up and coming drummers in the mix 🥁

Today finished with a very special visit from local Legend Liz Weir who led the storytelling workshop. Liz travels the world storytelling so it was fantastic to have her with us and we really appreciated Liz travelling down from the North Coast to be with us today. 📖

Day 2 of our Ulster Scots Summer Camp 🎉
Big Thank You to Billy Hill, who is a regular favourite now at our annual summer camp. Billy took us on a journey today through some Ulster Scots History and Music. With a special focus on the Lambeg Drum and Fife.

Fantastic new generation of potential Lambeg Drummers coming through 💪

We also made time for a few games, including our Carleton Street Orange Hall trail quiz with lots of exploring to find the answers 🕵️‍♂️ 🕵️‍♀️

Fantastic morning as some of our guides welcomed a group of Canadian University Students to Carleton Street Orange Hall and Heritage Centre for a town tour 🇨🇦

Quite fitting as we approach the 150th anniversary of Carleton Street Orange Hall in 2025. It was a trip to Canada that inspired Stewart Blacker to pursue the building of Carleton St Orange Hall.

Big Thank You to our guides for volunteering their time. We know you genuinely love sharing the history and heritage of our local area, but we never take for granted the time you all dedicate to it 🧡

It’s that time of year again 🙌
Our Annual Ulster Scots Summer Camp for children aged 7-10 years old is back.
From 5th-9th August, once again places are limited and are first come first served.
We have been working hard behind the scenes with lots of help from some of the team at Schomberg Mourne UlsterScots to introduce new workshops and activities 👏

As the summer camp has been developed and more added this year, there is a small charge this year of £5 per child. This is for the week and is non refundable.

Snacks and a hot meal will be provided as normal throughout the week.

For a registration form please email [email protected]

Thank you to the Ulster Scots Agency for providing the funding to make this summer camp possible.
