I can almost feel the warmth of the March sun as I reminisce of my last time here . Only 1.5 hours south of Jerusalem and 2.5 hours North of Eilat rises the remains of this fantastic palace. Herod the Great built a great palace for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. He certainly knew how to secure himself in the event of a revolt. What a view, including the Dead Sea.
According to Josephus, the siege of Masada by Roman troops from 73 to 74 CE, at the end of the First Jewish–Roman War, ended in the mass suicide of the 960 rebels who were hiding there. Jesus foretold the that the temple would be destroyed and these rebels found security on Massada before they would give in to the Romans. Herod even left them foodstores and water supplies, until they could no longer survive the persuance of the Romans. Mark 13 v 1-2.
