✨our drying room is jammed packed with delicious squishy yarn… this week I’ll start winding these large hanks into smaller 50g and 100g skeins all ready for labelling ❤️
✨we have more dying planned too.. we are going to be dying with the last of last years tansy harvest for a sunshine yellow on our new yarn for a couple of patterns coming soon 🤩✨🙏

✨Amelia has been making up more kismet bundles of our coara worsted weight yarn. 10 x 20g mini skeins of naturally dyed goodness 🤩
✨I hadn’t planned to take a photo of them today but when we were talking in the shop earlier they looked so beautiful as she bundled them up 🤩

A new species of pterosaur which lived up to 168 million years ago has been discovered on Skye

The winged reptile - Ceoptera Evansae - is believed to have lived during the Middle Jurassic period.

The fossil remains were first spotted by palaeontologists in Elgol back in 2006. Since the discovery, palaeontologists have been preparing the specimen and scanning the bones.

Most of the new species' closest relatives have been found in China, with the discovery being described by Professor Paul Barrett, merit researcher at the Natural History Museum, as a "complete surprise."

The name Ceoptera - is in reference to the Gaelic word cheò, in tribute to Skye's name as Eilean a' Cheò, the Isle of Mist.

The shoulders, wings, legs and backbone are what have been found to remain of the pterosaur skeleton.

Good explanation as to why the weather quoted on official media sites for Skye are not often as accurate as they could be, especially for those were caught out by the snow last week!

A good question was asked in the comments of one of my posts.

Why are weather observations from weather stations in Skye never quoted in the media?

There are good and bad reasons for this. The media tend to quote official statistics which are provided by the Met Office. These come from their network of official weather observations sites.

This is good, because Met Office observations sites, and equipment used within them, has to comply with very strict rules. The Met Office is a respected, world-class scientific organization. These rules ensure that the data being collected is of a very high quality and can be trusted.

Simply putting up a weather station does not always mean the weather obs data being collected is accurate. It is difficult for the media to verify the integrity of data being provided to them from unofficial sources. Hence, official statistics being quoted by the media.

This can be a bit frustrating because it means unofficial weather obs data, which may be accurate for a given location, is often ignored.

Sadly, large areas of the country have no official weather obs sites at all. I have included a map of official Met Office observation sites below.

The Met Office did run an official weather obs site at Lusa between Broadford and Kyleakin. It was removed (my understanding is this was not a MO decision) around 10 years ago and has not been replaced. Our closest official obs sites are located at Bealach Na Ba - often ignored by the media because it is located on the top of a mountain above Applecross, South Uist range and Aultbea. These obs sites often do not reflect weather conditions in Skye & Lochalsh.

Despite North West Scotland being one of the most important UK locations for observing the weather, sadly, it is covered by very few official weather obs sites. This means a lot of important UK weather data - especially during extremes - is unfortunately being missed. It also means you won't hear weather data from Skye being quoted in the media very often, because it isn't official data.

This is a wonderful article if you’re planning a trip to Northeast Skye. Our cottage overlooks Brothers Point where many of the discoveries have been found. We visited the Old Man of Storr yesterday and were absolutely blown away, it's hard not to post all of the 3500 photos we took! It was just one of those once-in-a-lifetime days where the beauty of the scenery just blew us away. The busy summer crowds had long since disappeared, and we could enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the place.

It was truly a sight to behold.

If you're ever on the Isle of Skye, we highly recommend visiting the Old Man of Storr. It's a truly magical place.

Skye's winter wonderland......

It's been a beautiful week here in Skye, with the crisp air and snowy peaks creating a magical winter wonderland.

The roads may be a tad icy, but they're quiet and the pace on the island has slowed down, offering a welcome respite from the busy summer months.

The weather continues to wow, with every turn of a corner revealing breathtaking views. It may be cold outside, but our cottage is warm, cosy, and inviting as we get ready for our Christmas guests.

We're so grateful to all of our guests for making this year so special, and we're looking forward to welcoming you back in 2024. Our diary is now open for bookings, and we're already taking reservations with returning guests and referrals, which is always a joy.
