It was a little breezy in Staffin last night! Miraculously there seems to be no damage to either cottage or indeed our own house and we have power. One advantage of having few trees.
Wind speeds for Skye & Lochalsh will slowly begin to subside through the rest of the night (see Shulista Weather Station wind speed graph below). The strongest winds transfer to north-east Scotland, where a red warning is in force.
I hope no-one has had any serious damaged done tonight. I know some folk have lost power, but I am amazed that, so far, I have not seen a flicker on our supply up here!
Skye has logged gust speeds of 96mph @ Shulista and 101mph @ Elgol tonight. These are locations at opposite ends of the island. Both are very exposed locations, so I have no reason to question the data being recorded. Certainly in the case of Shulista, my other weather stations have also logged gust speed approaching 90mph. I'm afraid I have not had time to look up or post data from other Skye & Lochalsh weather stations tonight, which I suspect will have also recorded high wind speeds.
The speeds recorded this evening make one of the strongest storm systems I have logged in Skye since I started running and collecting weather data after the storm in 2005. is not the strongest I have recorded, but it is well up there. I will try and post a bit more about tonight's data over the next few days.
Meanwhile, eyes now turn to Tuesday / Wednesday and another deep depression, which may bring us another stormy spell of weather - though probably not as wild as tonight. Yellow strong wind warnings for Tuesday / Wednesday have already been issued by the Met Office, but I have not posted them on the page as I wished to concentrate on the system tonight.
More unsettled weather to come, I'm afraid.
Take care.
