John Pounds was born in 1766 and is the man most responsible for Ragged Schools, which were charitable organizations set up to provide an education to children in deprived areas.

After a nasty fall at the dry docks in Portsmouth, John used his spare time to go round the local area and finding children to teach in his shoe shop.

The conditions and the lack of education to the working class in the area, often led them to a life of crime as a means of survival. And John realized that education was the key to break this cycle. This led the way for early education reforms later providing free education for children.

The workshop no longer exists, as well as the chapel where john attended with some of the children as both were destroyed in the war, but we do have this wonderful reconstruction and the John Pounds Memorial church and garden to remember him by.

Bonds of Friendship

The sculpture commemorates the sailing of the First Fleet of settlers from Spithead to Botany Bay, Australia, on 13 May 1787.
And a reminder of Portsmouth's past links with Australia acting as a token of friendship between the two countries.
