Red Bull Cliff diving heading for the North Coast. Epic!

This is the Barmouth at the end of Portstewart Strand, the two piers provide a safer passage for ships heading up the river to Coleraine. Before the piers were built the access was hampered by a sand bar that formed at the entrance and needed constant dredging to keep it low enough for ships to pass over.

The original piers were built by the Coleraine Harbour Commission formed under an Act of Parliament in 1879. The Honourable Irish Society made a free grant of Β£30,000 towards the overall cost of Β£66,000 for the construction. The piers greatly helped access but still needed dredging, they were subsequently extended between 1934–41 which is what we see today.

The number of ships entering now are few and far between, in the 60/70s it was several times a week, the pilot boat was kept in Portstewart harbour, it would head out when the tide was right with the pilot who would take the ship up to Coleraine.

It is a great walk from Portstewart to the Barmouth, on the other side is Caslterock Beach, a stones throw away. The ancient dune systems provide a great location for golfing on both sides.

Thank you for your visit

A worthwhile wee diversion

Taking a wee break from the coast for a journey along the Bann Valley Scenic Route, this is one of nine scenic routes that loop off the Causeway Coastal Route between Belfast and Derry.

The Bann Valley Scenic Route starts at the Strand Road roundabout near Riverside Regional Shopping Centre on the Coleraine bypass. The route is clearly signposted coming in from Derry before you reach the roundabout but coming from the opposite direction the signpost is on the roundabout, just take the first left after crossing the Bann River bridge.

The drive is approximately 16 miles and follows the river valley/plain down to the Agivey Bann bridge where it crosses and then follows the Glenstall, Loughan and Mountsandal Road back to rejoin the Causeway Coastal Route at the Lodge Roundabout.

If you want to visit the town of Ballymoney (why it is not officially on the Bann Valley Scenic Route is a big tourism oversight), the town developed as a rural market town and has a great history, museum and lots of small shops and eateries. I will come back to Ballymoney in a later post, taking a detour will only extend the drive to 20 miles.

The photo shows the start of the drive, across the river is the Riverside Shopping area, and in the foreground is the ancient site of Mountsandal which will feature in a future post., you can see the Bann River bridge in the distance and Coleraine beyond.

Thank you for your visits, comments, shares and follows, they all help against the dreaded FB algorithm which choke sites like mine that cannot afford to pay for ads.

More information about the Bann Valley can be found on my website: www.causewaycoastalroute.com
