Explorations Company

Explorations Company Tailored safaris and life changing holidays to Africa, Asia, Latin America and The Polar Regions. Explorations Company was first established in 1989.
(13)

Our core business then was creating highly individual safaris to Africa, reflecting the origins of the founders and hence the company’s original name; African Explorations. In time we were lucky enough to attract key individuals to our business and added India and surrounding areas such as Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Myanmar (Burma), to our portfolio and latterly also Latin America and The Polar

Regions. The business was finally rebranded as 'The Explorations Company'. Our original ethos holds firm to this day; we are totally dedicated to creating utterly personal and highly exclusive safaris, holidays & vacations for the most discerning travellers. Each itinerary we create is unique and in 27 years, no two itineraries have been repeated; each holiday experience aims to be ‘the journey of a lifetime’. The success of our company is down to our people. The founder of the business was brought up in Africa (but born in India) and we are lucky to have probably the most experienced and knowledgeable specialists anywhere. We are unique; our Africa specialists come from Africa and intrinsically know the continent, its cultures and its wildlife. In the same vein our Asian specialists come from Asia / India and our Latin American specialist has family in Mexico. It is all about that crucial understanding of the places one is discussing and of course, being able to then translate that into the right holiday for each and every client. We spend huge resource each year revisiting all the countries that we promote. Each place that we recommend for you has been thoroughly tested by us – the beds have been slept in, the rooms compared, the best views noted and the food sampled! We seek out the finest guides and the very best camps and lodges which give our clients the very best experiences. Whilst the relevance of all the above is self-evident, our main driving force is passion for what we do; it is in our blood. Our enthusiasm and love for Africa, India and Latin America, their wildlife and their people, continues as a thread through each safari or holiday, whether focused on “luxury” or something more down to earth and perhaps highly specialized, that we hand-craft for all of our clients. We also are deeply involved in charitable projects – both humanitarian- and conservation-oriented – which clients are welcome to experience. We have been chosen by the Financial Times on several occasions to arrange specialist group safaris for their readers. We were also chosen by Selfridges in London to arrange exclusive African safaris for their customers. Our owner, Nicola Shepherd, is also a judge for a publication that determines the quality of the safari camps and lodges in Africa and their sustainability and community practices. We hope that we have the privilege to work with you.

The majestic snow leopard

Cross a land of wilderness, towering glaciers and forbidding peaks in a quest to discover the majestic snow leopard in its natural habitat. Its as much about the epic trek, as the sighting of these animals that makes this experience so extraordinary.

To experience the joy of slow travel, spend a few days trekking with camels and the local Samburu tribe in the Mathews Mountains, Kenya.

Sian has spent two nights in a mobile camp along her trek. She walked along river beds and saw Samburu singing wells, talked to her guides and learned how they live and hold on to their traditions in the modern world.

Sian has visited Tawi Lodge in a private conservancy in the Amboseli region of Kenya, where the largest elephant herds in Kenya can be found.

This extraordinary region, in the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro, stretches across the border with Tanzania to form the Amboseli-Tsavo-Kilimanjaro ecosystem. It's well worth a visit on your next safari to Kenya - keep following for more inspiration from Sian's journey!

Nicola has just returned from her extraordinary visit to Alphonse Island in the Seychelles.

She says
"For me, the fact that Alphonse is simply so uncommercial, so very pristine, makes it a real winner. The saltwater fly fishing is superlative, and I caught several bonefish which are simply the most beautiful fish. Speaking to several fly fishermen, who normally fly fish in the Bahamas, they all agreed that the quality of the fishing and the professionalism of the guides beat the Bahamas hands down!"

Escape to Africa this winter

Explore the beautiful waters of the Okavango Delta in the ‘green season’. Whilst one may catch a rain shower or two, actually this is one of the most beautiful and rewarding times to visit this northern area of Botswana.

The migratory birds have arrived, and the flycatchers are busy making their nests; baby impala are appearing and you may spot them in the long grasses, where they're hidden by their mothers away from predators. Combine the Okavango with a few nights in Moremi Game Reserve to see more big game and herds of buffalo, giraffe, and waterbuck.

Rewilding 2000 Rhinos

African Parks have just taken responsibilty for a 2000 strong population of southern white rhinos in South Africa, with an intention to rewild them all within the next 10 years. This represents 15% of the total wild population so would be a huge feat for conservation, but comes with a high price tag for security and operations.

If you are seeking a deserving charity to make a donation to on World Rhino Day, please do consider African Parks who are effectively conserving huge swathes of Africa for future generations.

Spend the festive season on your own private yacht with your loved ones!

December and January in the Galapagos is the warm season, with the temperature averaging around 27 °C. There are lots of interesting activities at this time including snorkeling with sea lion pups in the shallow waters, watching giant tortoise eggs start to hatch - and it is the last chance of the year to see the Waved Albatross before they head off.

One of our favouries are the beautiful Evolution Yacht, ideal for a larger family reunion, or the classic Grace Yacht for up to 16.

Dramatic Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a land of extremes, from snow-topped high plateaus of the Bale Mountains to the acid lakes of the Danakil Depression, the hottest place on Earth.

Explore this alien land by private helicopter, swooping across the desert and salt flats to land near the bubbling lakes with vibrant salt cones, geysers, sulphur deposits and pools of acid. Then, hike up the Erta Ale volcano to peer over the rim into its active lava lakes, known as the 'Gateway to Hell'.

Lodge to Lodge through Bolivia’s High Desert.

One of South America’s iconic adventures, the off-road journey between Chile and Bolivia from the world’s driest desert to its largest salt pan travels through some of the remotest terrain on the planet.

Make this crossing in considerable style, staying at Explora’s very comfortable lodges along the way, encountering otherworldly geology, bright-red soda lakes, cactus-studded islands and plenty of wildlife from herds of wild vicuña to flamingos.

Our Head of Latin America Mark knows this route intimately and, back in the 1990s, was the part of the first group to discover a deep canyon walled in by sarcophagus-shaped rock formations now known as the Valley of the Mummies (which he was given the honour of naming).
