This week's object of the week is an 18th century cannon ball believed to have been used in the Siege of Fort William in 1746. It was found in the gutter in Alma Road Fort William in 2022 and handed in to the museum!

It was found in the vicinity of where fighting took place between the British Army, defending Fort William, and the Jacobite Army, who were attacking the fort from nearby Cow Hill during the Siege of Fort William from 20 March to 3 April 1746.

It is now on display in our Jacobite gallery.

Looking for that gift that is a little bit different this Christmas?

The 2nd Edition of the history and trail guide of the Battle Of Littleferry was launched earlier this year. This edition includes significant new material garnered since the publication of the 1st Edition in 2022, partly from research but also from input by members of the public. The new edition also explains the story of the memorial stone and the intent behind the whole project.

The 2nd Edition can be purchased from: Dunrobin Castle, Culloden Battlefield NTS, Historylinks Museum, Dornoch, Ullapool Bookshop, Dornoch Bookshop, Ferrycroft Visitor Centre, Lairg, Lindsay’s, Golspie and Golspie Pharmacy, the cost remains £7. The book can also be ordered by email to [email protected]. All profits from the book go to the Golspie Heritage Society.

We want to thank each and every one of you for making our first Jacobite Festival a huge success. Over the last few weeks, we have journeyed across Scotland in the footprints of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and earlier key Jacobites, learning more about their storied past.

From Inverness and the Isle of Skye all the way to Edinburgh and the Borders, these independent events took you on a journey to discover how Scotland's culture and communities were changed forever during the Jacobite period.

There are still a few post-festival events to discover, including a re-enactment weekend with The Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust.

Make sure to keep your eyes peeled on this account to find out about future Jacobite-related events.

Our first official festival may be over, but not to worry, we have a few extra post-festival events to satisfy your Jacobite cravings. First up, we head to our nation’s capital, Edinburgh for a special event titled ‘Teaching Bonnie Prince Charlie’.

This special event offers teachers across all Levels an opportunity to join Emma
Stead, Curator of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, for an in-depth look at Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite army as well as a guided tour of the rooms he stayed in when his Jacobite army arrived at the Palace in September 1745.

Afterwards, join their Learning Team for refreshments, an interactive craft, and further information about resources available for teaching this topic.

How does a Jacobite City Tour sound to you? Walking through the modern city, your guide will take you back in time with stories of the 1700s and what life would have been like for those fighting for and against the Jacobite cause in Perth. Find out where the Bonnie Prince took up residence during his stay here, and of Perth’s gift to the victorious Duke of Cumberland.

The tour begins and ends outside Perth Museum (North Entrance). Please be aware this is an outdoor event and may include steps or uneven surfaces. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
