Here’s a practical guide to visiting Ireland in spring 🌷

The weather in the spring months (March, April, May) can be mixed, but there are much longer days than in winter.

This means you’ll be able to spend more time outdoors.

Spring months generally have great events and prices, but you should be aware of price hikes for both Easter and St. Patrick’s Day.

If you’re looking for things to do, you can enjoy scenic hikes and walks; we’d recommend the stunning coastal walk of the Cliffs of Moher, or Di**le Way in County Kerry.

You can also take in popular tourist spots and attractions like the Giants Causeway in County Antrim or Dublin’s Guinness Storehouse.

If you’d like some help planning your route around Ireland, be sure to get in touch with our specialists.

Have you heard of Imbolc?

Imbolc, which is sometimes spelt as Imbolg, is an ancient Gaelic festival that marks the beginning of spring.

It’s celebrated on 1 February, which is roughly halfway between the winter solstice (around 21 December) and the spring Equinox (21 March).

It's traditionally seen as the feast day of Saint Brigid, Ireland's patroness saint.

While a lot of its traditions died out during the 20th century, you may still catch a glimpse of Imbolc celebrations across Ireland and Scotland.

Some choose to light candles, while others make a Brigid cross out of weeds or straw.

Watch Scotland come into bloom.

Scotland in spring promises a huge variety of flowers, which can be found across moors, cliffs, mountains, plains, woodlands, coasts and cities.

If you’re visiting during spring, look out for:

Daffodils: From March – April, you can see them planted in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, as well as in open spaces, along roadsides and in people’s gardens.

Bluebells: Blooming in late April and peaking in May, you can enjoy these eye-catching flowers in Scotland’s expansive woodlands.

Cherry blossoms: To catch the cherry blossoms at their best, we’d recommend heading to Scotland’s cities during May.

Wildflowers: Throughout spring, these unique habitats can be found in Scotland’s countryside. Be sure to visit the machair; a stunning grassy plain in the Outer Hebrides.

We can all help preserve areas of natural beauty.

Whether hiking in the highlands or exploring the vast beaches of Pembrokeshire, it’s important to be mindful of the environment. This is especially true in tourist spots, which can often become damaged or spoilt over time.

Together, tourists should do their bit to ensure future generations can enjoy these stunning landscapes.

Here are some easy ways you can do this:

• Respect the local environment by staying on footpaths and trails
• Take any rubbish or trash away with you and recycle it if you can
• Avoid recreational activities that harm the environment

Have you visited Tyrella Beach in Northern Ireland?

This award-winning beach can be found in Downpatrick, County Down, and is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts.

Tyrella Beach is a conservation area and is backed by 25 hectares of mature dunes that feature local flora and fauna. It has maintained both its Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards for over a decade, making it a clean, safe beach for families and groups.

Offering scenic walks and stunning views of the mountains of Mourne, this sandy beach is an idyllic picnic spot. You can also take part in activities such as surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing, and fishing.

The high winds and waves mean that this beach can get cold quickly, so be sure to bring a warm coat or jacket with you. The car park can also get very busy during the summer months, so be prepared to wait for a space if necessary.

Get to know Ireland and its counties 🇮🇪

Ireland is made up of four provinces and 32 counties, which all have their unique traditions and charm.

Northern Ireland is made up of 6 counties, while the Republic of Ireland is made up of 26.

You’ll need a valid passport or national identity card to enter both parts of Ireland.

Two of Ireland’s largest counties are found in the province of Munster: Cork and Kerry. Both promise great food, beautiful countryside and Irish charm aplenty.

As the name suggests, County Dublin is the home of the Republic of Ireland’s capital, while Belfast lies in the Northern Ireland county of Antrim.

We’d recommend visiting both cities if you can.

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, Northern Ireland is a must-see destination.

Over the course of eight seasons, 25 filming locations were used across Northern Ireland. The vast majority can be found in County Antrim and County Down.

One of the most famous locations is The Dark Hedges in Antrim, which was used to depict the King’s Road. It’s one of the most photographed landmarks on the Game of Thrones map, and is just a stone’s throw away from Bushmills Distillery.

Fair Head, also known as Dragonstone in the series, can be found just along the coast of Murlough Bay. These breathtaking cliffs in County Antrim measures a dizzying 600 feet in height, and was used for many of Daenerys Targaryen’s scenes with Jon Snow.

In County Down, you can visit Inch Abbey, which was used as the set for the Riverlands scenes, i.e. the beginning of the War of the Five Kings. Inch Abbey is situated on the northern bank of the Quoile River, where it has stood since the 12th or 13th century.

All of these stunning locations make the perfect addition to your Northern Ireland itinerary.

Take in Ireland’s intriguing history at Ballynoe Stone Circle.

This historical landmark is one of the most important and mysterious prehistoric monuments in Ulster, Northern Ireland.

Located in a small hamlet of Ballynoe, this large, complex monument was partly excavated in 1937–1939, but its purpose is still unclear.

Made up of over 50 closely spaced stones surrounding an oval mound, the site we see today is thought to have been developed in the late Neolithic period or earlier Bronze Age.

The site is free to enter, and is perfect for fans of history, myth and legends.

When driving on Scotland’s roads, there are four important things every budding adventurer should know.

Drive on the left – all vehicles must drive on the left-hand side of the road, and give way to the right at roundabouts. The only time when you can drive on the right side of the road is when you are overtaking the vehicle in front of you.

Be mindful of changing speed limits – speed limits can change quickly in Scotland, and will be clearly marked. Speed limits on motorways and dual carriageways are 70mph, and single carriage roads are 60mph. Towns are residential areas are usually 30mph.

Follow the drink driving limit - Scotland’s drink drive limit is just 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood – the lowest in the UK. However, we’d recommend avoiding drinking alcohol altogether if you’re driving, as it’s the safer option.

Understand single track roads – these roads are only wide enough for one vehicle, so you’re likely to need to give way to any oncoming vehicle. You can do so using a passing place.
