When driving on Scotland’s roads, there are four important things every budding adventurer should know.

Drive on the left – all vehicles must drive on the left-hand side of the road, and give way to the right at roundabouts. The only time when you can drive on the right side of the road is when you are overtaking the vehicle in front of you.

Be mindful of changing speed limits – speed limits can change quickly in Scotland, and will be clearly marked. Speed limits on motorways and dual carriageways are 70mph, and single carriage roads are 60mph. Towns are residential areas are usually 30mph.

Follow the drink driving limit - Scotland’s drink drive limit is just 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood – the lowest in the UK. However, we’d recommend avoiding drinking alcohol altogether if you’re driving, as it’s the safer option.

Understand single track roads – these roads are only wide enough for one vehicle, so you’re likely to need to give way to any oncoming vehicle. You can do so using a passing place.

Experience the majestic lakeside beauty of Ross Castle.

Just a stone’s throw from the rugged southwest coast of Ireland, Ross Castle sits proudly along the lake of Lough Leane. With stunning mountain views and a picturesque setting, it makes a great addition to your Irish adventure.

Thanks to its coastal location, Ross Castle has played a prominent role throughout Ireland’s military history. Most notably, the castle was the last stronghold in Munster to resist Cromwell's forces in the 1650s. It’s also known for its link with the Brownes of Killarney, who retained the castle until it became a military barracks in the 19th century.

These days, Ross Castle offers both history and culture to visitors. Wind your way around the castle’s grounds before taking a boat trip out on the lake, giving you a chance to get up close and personal with Ireland’s wildlife.

If you’d like to incorporate Ross Castle into your self-driving itinerary, get in touch with our team.

You’ve just found the most majestic riverside fortress in Ireland 🇮🇪

Cahir Castle is one of the largest and most well-preserved castles in the country, and offers plenty for tourists looking to learn about its rich and varied history.

Located in County Tipperary, this impressive fortress was built in 1142 by Conor O'Brien. He built the castle on the remains of an old Irish fortification called a cathair, which translates to stone fort in Irish.

Cahir Castle is known as the home of the legendary Excalibur sword, and was originally a stronghold for the Butler family before it fell to the Earl of Essex in 1599.

Visit the Cahir’s Great Hall, which proudly displays the head of the now-extinct Irish Great Elk, or take in the military remnants of the castle’s turbulent history.

After visiting the castle, you can explore the nearby Inch Field public park, which features some wonderful wooden sculptures, or take the riverside walk leading from the castle to Swiss Cottage.

If you’re heading to Scotland this weekend, make sure you take a trip to Largs for its annual Viking Festival.

Located in North Ayrshire, around 33 miles from Glasgow, Largs and the surrounding towns come together to celebrate the 1263 Battle of Largs, the last mainland battle between the Scots and Norse.

Running from 31st August until the 8th September, this festival promises parades, live entertainment, fringe events, food and craft markets, workshops, and the ever-popular Festival of Fire.

The end of the festival will see the burning of a long boat, followed by a fantastic fireworks display.

Get acquainted with the most famous waterfalls in Wales.

In the Cambrian Mountains, you’ll find Devil’s Bridge Falls, just twelve miles away from the bright seaside town of Aberystwyth. These stunning waterfalls have attracted visitors since the 18th century, including the English poet William Wordsworth.

If you’re in South Snowdonia, you can take a trip to Rhaeadr Ddu, which means Black Falls. These can look different each time you visit thanks to the light, weather and rainfall, so be sure to bring your camera with you.

You can also see stunning falls in the Brecon Beacons, home to the Pontsarn Blue Pool. Watch the water cascade through the rocks, or enjoy a cooling dip in the pool in warm summer months. You can also take in Taf Fechan Gorge on your chosen walking route.

Looking for some inspiration for your Celtic trip?

Why not take in the movie locations of Ireland, Scotland and Wales 📽️

In Ireland, you can visit County Kildare and County Wicklow where Braveheart was filmed, as well as the stunning Cliffs of Moher, which have appeared in both Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Princess Bride.

And if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, be sure to add The Dark Hedges and Cushendun Caves to your itinerary.

Scotland has starred in a huge array of films and TV shows over the years, but the most famous are Glencoe, Loch Craignish and Duart Castle, which have all served as backdrops in James Bond movies, and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which has made multiple appearances in the Harry Potter series.

Meanwhile, Wales has been home to the likes of Doctor Who and The Crown; take in the sites of the capital of Cardiff, or head up to historic Caernarfon Castle.

In our opinion, Autumn and waterfalls are a match made in heaven.

As the forests change colour, Autumn can be one of the best times of the year to see Welsh waterfalls.

With the wetter Autumn season, the waterfalls are more powerful, and at their best.

During the colder season, waterfalls are less visited by tourists, meaning you’re less likely to come across crowds.

However, you’ll need to take more care visiting the waterfalls as the weather turns colder.

Our top tip for visiting waterfalls in Autumn? Paths can be narrow and slippery, which makes it more difficult to access waterfalls. Wear shoes with strong grips to keep yourself safe.

Planning a trip to Scotland?

Here are our travel tips and advice:

People travelling to the UK without a visa will soon need to get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

No matter what time of year you visit, we’d recommend checking the weather before you arrive. Scotland’s weather is changeable, so you’ll want to make sure you’re packing appropriate clothing. We can advise on this while you plan.

It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast during your trip, as you can often drive for 20 minutes and find that conditions are different.

English is Scotland’s main language. You may hear Scots spoken in plenty of places too. You’ll also encounter Gaelic (pronounced gah-lick) in some areas, particularly those in the Outer Hebrides.

If you’d like some help with planning your driving route around Scotland, get in touch with our team.

When is the best time to visit Ireland?

If you want to avoid the crowds, September and October are great months to visit. There are long days with lots of dry spells, which make them perfect for exploring.

As the seasons begin to change, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of Ireland’s national parks and forests, which explode into colour. Take a tour of the Ring of Kerry, an epic drive around the Iveragh Peninsula.

September and October also bring a flurry of festivals; enjoy the International Seafood and Oyster Festival in Galway, the Guinness Jazz Festival, or the Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin, home to the creator of Dracula.

Whether you’re a nature lover or a literature fan, you’ll find a wealth of unforgettable experiences in Ireland.

Planning a driving tour of Scotland?

There are a variety of routes you can take from Scotland’s biggest airports.

If you’re flying into Edinburgh, you can drive straight into Edinburgh City Centre, which is just 8 miles away from the airport.

Here you can immerse yourself in architecture, history and art; wander down cobbled passageways, admire the charms of Edinburgh Castle, or visit the National Galleries of Scotland.

For those landing at Glasgow Airport or Glasgow Prestwick Airport, you can start your trip in the stunning Loch Tay, 1 hour and 45 minutes from the city.

The largest loch in Perthshire, this majestic stretch of water runs from Kenmore to Killin and is surrounded by quaint villages and lush forests.

And for travellers starting their route from Aberdeen International Airport, there are breathtaking views aplenty in Royal Deeside, an hour and a half west of Aberdeen.

Loved by the British Royal Family since the time of Queen Victoria, this characteristic landscape combines moody mountains, winding rivers and traditional Scottish villages.

With so many breathtaking destinations to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice no matter where you are.

Some of the most notable places include Aberdeenshire, home to the magnificent Dunnottar castle. Boasting panoramic sea views and intricate architecture, it’s a must-see destination.

We’d also recommend a visit to Glenfinnan in Fort William – a stunning spot for photographers.

With a backdrop of outstanding Highland scenery, you can take in the views of Glenfinnan Monument, erected as a tribute to the Highlanders who fought in the Jacobite Risings.

If you fancy a trip away from the mainland, indulge your inner explorer and head to the Isle of Barra, located in the Outer Hebridean islands.
