Singapore: our final stop on, what has been, a wonderful adventure. It rained the first day so we took the hop-on/off bus tour and hopped off at Raffles for a couple of Singapore Sling’s … it had to be done!

The skies cleared for a spectacular light show at the Trees by the Bay in the evening.

We took it easy on the last day and were treated to a rare sighting of the otters as we finished lunch.

Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort: One and a half hours by boat from Sandakan, took us to a small tributary of the Kinabatangan River for the next 2 nights of our adventure. We had a fabulous chalet with a veranda overlooking the jungle and were very well fed.

We had several river cruises and a night walk, guided by Max who was extremely knowledgeable and had eyes like a hawk! If I were to choose a highlight (difficult!), it was sitting in our boat, about 20 feet from a huge male orangutan who had come down to the river for a breakfast of palm hearts … magical!

P.S. I purposefully didn’t add music as there are sounds of the jungle (and us 😂)

Sepilok Nature Resort: Situated next door to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, we made two visits at feeding time and were lucky to see quite a number of the Orangutans who live freely in the surrounding jungle. There is also a nursery for the babies who, whilst free to roam, tend to stay close by the sanctuary and their carers.

Being next to the resort, they did wander in from time to time and we were treated to a very close encounter with a mother and baby at the chalets.

Both mornings we were visited by a pair of courting Sun birds on the tree by our veranda!

We saw a few Sun Bears at the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre - all have been rescued from captivity, some having signs of the trauma they must have endured.

A day with the Dayaks: a 3.5 drive and 1 hour longboat journey deep into the jungle and we arrived with our hosts for the night - the Iban tribe.

We stopped at a huge market along the way, to buy food and soap to give as gifts and these were distributed, by the chief, among the 12 families living at the longhouse.

The Iban welcomed us warmly, danced and laughed with us, were generous to a fault with their home-brewed rice wine and whiskey and fed us until we could eat no more!

After a reasonable night sleep (it rained a lot!) and a feast of a breakfast, we learned a bit more of the tribe’s history and had a go at blow-piping before heading back along the river with a stop at a pebble beach for a delicious Iban barbecue - the veg and rice was cooked inside Bamboo.

I feel privileged to have experienced real jungle life, if only for a few hours and will treasure the memories.

The Iban were, once-upon-a-time, famous for being head-hunters. I’m happy to report that I came away with my head intact although I did leave a little piece of my heart behind! 😉

Kuching: capital of the Sarawak region and a visit to the Semmangoh Orangutan sanctuary where, despite the torrential rain, we were blessed to see 4 of the 28 Orangutans that they’ve rehabilitated there (they are left to roam free and wild).

The Rise of Sustainable Travel: What It Really Means ✈🚢

Sustainable travel is more than just a buzzword—it’s about making conscious choices before, during, and after your trips to reduce your environmental footprint and support local communities.

Here’s how you can travel more sustainably:

💚Choose Eco-friendly Transportation: If you're heading to Europe, consider travelling by train. If you need to fly, opt for direct flights, as take-offs and landings consume the most fuel. Once you’ve arrived, use public transport like buses, trains, or trams, or explore on foot or by bike for a more authentic experience.

💚Select Sustainable Accommodation: Look for accommodations with certifications like LEED, Green Key, or EarthCheck, which adhere to sustainable practices. Staying in locally-owned guesthouses or boutique hotels benefits the community. Participate in towel and linen reuse programs, minimize water use, and remember to turn off lights, air-con, and electronics when not in use.

💚Avoid Food Wastage: Food is a huge part of the travel experience, but did you know 20% of food produced globally is wasted? Hotels and cruise lines with buffets are major contributors. Support farm-to-table initiatives, food tours, and restaurants that offer locally sourced ingredients.

💚 Support Local Communities: Buy locally made products and souvenirs to support artisans and small businesses. Eating at local restaurants and shopping at food markets not only supports the local economy but also reduces food miles. Opt for local tour operators and guides for authentic experiences that directly benefit the community.

💚Engage in Ethical Wildlife Tourism: Respect wildlife by avoiding littering, staying on designated paths, and steering clear of attractions that exploit animals, such as elephant rides or swimming with captive dolphins. Choose ethical wildlife experiences, and visit national parks, marine reserves, and sanctuaries that contribute to conservation efforts.

💚Consider Slow Travel: Spend more time in fewer places to reduce your carbon footprint and develop a deeper connection with your destination. Choosing less crowded locations also helps lessen the impact on popular tourist spots.

By incorporating these practices into your travel plans, you’re not just a tourist—you’re a responsible traveller making a positive impact on the world.

Beating Jet Lag: Tips for a Smooth Transition Across Time Zones ⌚

Jet lag can be a real challenge, especially when crossing multiple time zones.

Here are some practical tips I’ve learned along the way to help you minimise its effects:

1️⃣ Adjust Your Schedule Before You Travel:

Start gradually shifting your sleep and meal times to match your destination’s time zone a few days before your trip. Aim to go to bed and wake up 30-60 minutes earlier or later each day, depending on your destination.

2️⃣ Stay Hydrated:

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight. Avoid alcohol and caffeine if possible, as they can dehydrate you and worsen jet lag symptoms, making it harder to sleep.

3️⃣ Time Your Arrival:

If you can, choose a flight that arrives in the early evening. This allows you to stay up until a normal bedtime at your destination, helping your body adjust more easily.

4️⃣ Get Comfortable on the Flight:

Use earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones, an eye mask, and a comfortable neck pillow to help you rest and sleep during your flight. The more rested you are, the easier the adjustment will be.

5️⃣ Seek Natural Light:

Exposure to natural light helps reset your internal clock. Spend time outdoors during daylight hours at your destination, and limit exposure to screens and bright lights before bedtime to avoid interfering with melatonin production.

6️⃣ Give Yourself Time to Adjust:

It can take a few days to fully adapt, especially if you’ve crossed several time zones. Allow your body time to adjust, and avoid overbooking your schedule during the first couple of days.

By following these tips, you can ease the transition and make the most of your trip, no matter where in the world you’re headed.

Discover the Hidden Gems of Scotland Right on Your Doorstep 😊

Who says a holiday has to involve jetting off to a different continent when we have so many hidden treasures right here in the UK?

As many of you know, I’m passionate about Scotland, and despite its reputation for unpredictable weather, I’ve often found myself basking in sunshine there while it’s raining at home!

Scotland is renowned for its rugged terrain, ancient castles, and rich cultural heritage. The dramatic landscapes of the Highlands with their towering mountains, deep glens, and serene lochs are a walker’s (and photographers) paradise. While along the coast, you’ll discover stunning bays and coves, some with golden sandy beaches that are practically deserted.

Scotland’s charm extends to its 900 offshore islands, including the famous Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland Islands—all easily accessible by ferry from the mainland. And for archaeology enthusiasts, Orkney is an absolute must-visit, as this UNESCO World Heritage site features some of the best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe, including Skara Brae, a village dating back to around 3180 BC, and the Ring of Brodgar, a massive stone circle from around 2500 BC.

Why travel far when such wonders are just a short journey away? Scotland’s beauty and history are waiting to be explored.

Whether it's a Scottish adventure or somewhere else in the world, message me today to plan your perfect escape.

Why Travel Insurance Shouldn’t Be an Afterthought! 🤔

Travel insurance is often something people leave until the last minute, or skip altogether, but it’s one of the most important parts of booking a holiday.

It’s not just about covering cancellations or delays—it’s about protecting yourself from unforeseen situations that could cost you thousands.

Should I look for the cheapest deals?

Opting for the cheapest policy might seem like a good idea at the time, but it could lead to headaches down the road. There’s nothing worse than battling with an insurance company because your policy doesn’t cover what you need—a few pounds saved upfront could end up costing you much more in the long run. But, with so many different policies out there, finding the right one can feel like navigating a minefield.

It’s crucial to ensure you’re covered for all the activities you plan to do, the type of holiday you’re taking, the full cost and duration of your trip, and any medical conditions you might have. Knowing that a reputable company is backing your insurance is just as important.

Often, an annual policy is more cost-effective than a single-trip policy, especially if you travel several times a year.

Like all insurance, the best outcome is that you never need to use it—but if you do, you’ll be glad you made the investment!

When you think of Kenya, it’s easy to picture the iconic beach resorts that everyone talks about. But as someone who’s spent time exploring beyond the usual tourist spots, I can tell you there’s so much more to discover!

One such discovery was Manda Bay, a remote and stunningly beautiful spot on the Lamu Peninsula. It’s far removed from the crowded beaches and offers a level of tranquillity and natural beauty that’s truly rare.

Manda Bay is the epitome of barefoot luxury—a place where you can truly disconnect and soak in the untouched beauty of the landscape. The lodge has charming bandas right on the beach, providing the perfect mix of comfort and simplicity. What makes the experience even more magical is that everything’s maintained and serviced by people from the local community, adding an authentic and personal touch to your stay.

This is a proper hidden gem, offering an experience that’s as luxurious as it is down-to-earth. Whether it’s taking a quiet boat ride, Paddleboarding through the Mangroves or simply enjoying the peace and quiet, Manda Bay is the perfect retreat for those looking to go off the beaten path.

If you’re after a post-safari destination that’s far from the ordinary, Manda Bay should be at the top of your list. It’s a place that truly embodies the concept of luxury through simplicity and connection with nature.
