Sometimes you have to look a little harder to find that perfect gift for someone special, shying away from the high street chains and searching through cobbled markets or cosy little shops full of hidden treasures. Thankfully, Barnard Castle is full of such delights, with so many quirky independent shops, with wonderful festive window displays to beckon you inside.
Even when you're done shopping, it would be a shame not to make the most of your trip and settle down somewhere to eat amongst the assorted cafes and restaurants that line the high street. There's something to cater to all tastes, and some great takeaway options if you're ready to head back to your holiday home and put your feet up!

If you're visiting this weekend then this year's Light Up Barnard Castle event looks like it's going to be a spectacular event 🎄
As well as the Christmas light switch-on, there will be a light parade, various displays and activities within the castle grounds, a giant snowglobe, Santa's grotto, food vendors and entertainment - including a wonderful light and fire show from Penella Bee (pictured).

Food will be available at Scar Top from 5pm, with the switch-on taking place at 6.30pm.
