Looking for a touch of elegance for your next cruise? Today I was privileged to be invited to look around the brand new Explora 1, the first ship to be launched by Explora Journeys (the luxury brand of the long established MSC Group)

There is totally understated luxury throughout the ship, and a really comfortable, at home feel when on board - every cabin is an ocean view suite with a private balcony….. there are 3 outdoor pools, 1 indoor pool with a retractable roof, an indoor and outdoor gym, 64 cabanas, 6 dining venues and plenty of public areas, a staff ratio of 1,25 to 1, with approx 900 guests on board; I am excited to see this cruise line expand over the next few years when they launch their other ships.

Luxury cruise line Silversea Cruises have just launched their newest ship, Silver Nova, which is the twelfth ship to join their fleet. It’s being marketed as a home away from home for up to 728 guests.

Silver Nova’s innovative asymmetrical design introduces the world like never before, offering an immersive destination experience to their guests.

With a gross tonnage of 54,700 tons she offers a space-to-guest ratio of 75 GRT-per-passenger becoming one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built. Silver Nova is their most environmentally friendly, and thanks to her groundbreaking technological solutions, she will propel Silversea into a new era of sustainable cruising.

I know the MD of Silversea and have been watching some videos he’s posted on LinkedIn over this week….. just ‘wow’. They have ‘The Salt Lab’ where during the day you can go to watch the chefs cook and they teach you how to use the local produce, and you make a meal, and in the evening it becomes ‘The Chef’s Table’ where guests go to have an 8 -10 course meal!

Today I was invited to look around the cruise ship, Celebrity Silhouette before she left Southampton on her way to Ireland and Iceland. As the ship was fully booked, we were only able to look around a few of the suites (the last few photos are in a balcony cabin that I managed to persuade the nice man cleaning the room to let me quickly go into to take some photos - he was cleaning the bathroom so I couldn’t get in there).
I have photos of some of the public areas and restaurants too which I can send if you are interested.
The ship is one of their Solstice group (others being Equinox, Solstice, Reflection and Eclipse) of cruise ships which carry 2,852 to 3,046 guests depending on the ship.
I have been fortunate to have been on numerous cruise ships and I was very impressed with this one. The public areas were spacious, the cabins and suites have recently been updated and, along with the usual buffet restaurant and main dining room, there is a good choice of speciality restaurants.

With five cruise ships in the Solstice class, cruisers have more choices in terms of itineraries. You can choose from sailings to Alaska, the Bahamas, Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Asia, South America, and Australia & New Zealand. Solstice-class ships also sail longer, more exotic voyages than the ships in Celebrity’s ‘Edge Class’ ships, which are larger.

For those of you who like to cruise from the UK, Celebrity’s new ship, Apex (Edge Class) will be sailing out of Southampton next year .

I fly home today after a week’s cruise with AmaWaterways Cruises on the AmaVerde from Vilshofen, Bavaria to Budapest along the Danube, via Vienna with a few other stops en route.

We were fortunate enough to be in a cabin with a balcony (which I would definitely recommend).

From beginning to end the cruise was faultless- the ship is classed as 4 star, however the service and food surpassed some 5 star cruises I have been on. The restaurant manager was uber attentive when it came to ensuring the food served satisfied my dietary requirements- nothing was too much trouble.

Breakfast is served at a set time, with options for both early and late diners in the main lounge are. Lunch is provided both in the restaurant, and a light option in the lounge. There is only one dining sitting and the times changed daily to fit in excursions and the itinerary. On 3 nights, there was an opportunity to dine at the Chef’s Table - a 7 course meal (they will change the menu to suit dietary requirements when necessary).

All excursions are included, as well as wine with meals and cocktails before dinner. The entertainment provided was very low key but very good and enjoyable. Our ship only had one lounge area which some people might not be happy with as there was no where to escape at this time of year when the entertainment was on, however in the summer there is an outside seating area on the top deck.

I have added some photos of the food served . The last one is the dinner we received after the restaurant closed - we spent the entire day in Budapest and got back after dinner service has finished. The restaurant manager spoke to the chef, and without hesitation 10 minutes later we were served a delicious fish dinner.

Exciting news for those who like a luxury cruise - hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to look around, if only to see the Funnel Suite mentioned in the article… just ‘wow’.

Luxury hotel chain Four Seasons is launching a cruise division that it says will bring its “legendary service to the seas”.
Four Seasons Yachts will be led by cruise industry veteran Larry Pimentel, former chief of Azamara, Cunard, Seabourn and SeaDream Yacht Club.

The new business extension is a partnership between luxury shipping experts Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, with the first Four Seasons vessel anticipated to set sail in late 2025.

The order, which was announced in July, includes the option for two additional vessels and amounts to about €1.2 billion.
Four Seasons claimed its yacht would be marked by “bespoke craftsmanship, personalised service and a dedication to excellence, appealing to discerning guests looking to reimagine their love of travel by experiencing the splendour of modern sea voyaging”.

President Christian Clerc said: “Four Seasons Yachts represents the next chapter of Four Seasons’ long history of industry-leading innovation, and a milestone moment for our company as we continue to capitalise on opportunities to extend the world of Four Seasons.
“True vision rests in the ability to imagine the possibilities while always remaining loyal to one’s values. Our vision for this venture does just that.”

The first Four Seasons Yacht will be 207 metres long and 27 metres wide with 14 decks. It will boast 95 suites, each of which will cost $4.2 million to build, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, tall ceilings and large terrace decks.

Four Seasons Yachts claimed its first ship will offer nearly 50% more living space per guest than currently available in the luxury cruise market, providing “ultimate privacy, flexibility and spaciousness in an all-suite nautical residential setting”.

The largest residence will be the Funnel Suite which will be spread over four levels and will feature a private wading pool and a dedicated private spa area. The vessel will also offer a network of joining suite combinations.

The first Four Seasons Yacht will also house a range of restaurants, lounges and bar concepts as well as a full-service spa, salon and wellness programming.

A canoe-shaped aft will be home to an expansive pool deck, which will be able to transform into an outdoor movie theatre or private event space. The aft of the vessel will also host a marina where guests can sunbathe, enter the water or make use of the yacht’s aqua leisure toys and accessories.

A dedicated team will lead and staff the brand’s first vessel, with Four Seasons Yachts claiming it will have an “industry-leading” staff-to-guest ratio.

Pimentel said: “In partnership with Four Seasons, we are creating a new category of luxury lifestyle travel that appeals to discerning guests.

“We are bringing together the very best across industries to create the pinnacle yachting offering through world-class design, curated experiences and exceptional service.

“When we launch in 2025, there will be nothing else like it on the open seas. Our shipbuilding partnership with Fincantieri rounds out a triumvirate of industry leaders in this unprecedented luxury lifestyle project.”

Fincantieri chief executive and managing director Pierroberto Folgiero added: “We are excited to embrace this new opportunity with Four Seasons that will allow us to strengthen our global leadership position.

“With a reputation built on innovation and reliability, Fincantieri combines ground-breaking engineering and technology to create the finest vessels in the world, ensuring sustainability practices are integrated throughout the design and guest experience.”

Four Seasons Yachts said more of the vessel’s features and programme will be revealed in the coming months.
