Shocking and sad news out of Canton today. Carl Bevan was a brilliant artist and drummer and a very nice and funny man. A massive loss. Sending our love and condolences to his daughter and partner and family, as well as his many friends. Gone way, way too soon.

If you go down to Heath Park today, you're in for a big surprise... Created by , a corner of one of Cardiff's biggest parks has become a haven for families going through the hardest of times. In a website post from last week the charity states: "The Celebration of Life garden in has a bear theme and even looks like a giant teddy bear from the sky.
"The peaceful area...stands just a stone's throw from Wales' largest hospital and has the aim of giving families whose children are having hospital treatment a place to get away for a time. There is a picnic area and a bear trail for the children to enjoy."

One for the teachers.... Phew! Last day of school today. Rather than some glorious victory lap, as ever it feels that we (my family) stagger over the finish line, done-in, a ragged rabble. (This evil cold/bug thing that won't quit isn't helping. Anyone else suffering?) Anyway, the inspirational cup quote as seen in in the context of this post isn't intended as inward looking, it isn't even forward looking - no, this is for the teachers (especially 'our' teachers – you may know who you are, Ms W). If it can be construed as such, it's a massive THANK YOU. 'You got this' teaching lark down to an art and you're brilliant. 'You got this' year over and done with ✅ and you nailed it, and I know for a fact that our kid is all the better for having been taught by you and been supported and befriended by you. Diolch!

Have long admired this and wanted to celebrate it before it got painted over. The fact it's on Letty Street – pun intended, d'you think?

Remarkable women: a brand new on Kimberley Road in Penylan celebrates novelist Bernice Rubens (1923–2004). From Splott, Rubens, who attended Cardiff High School for Girls, became the first woman to win the Booker Prize in 1970, for The Elected Member. Presumably this was her home, or maybe the owner is just a big fan. Lovely home either way. You can follow for more information.

I... I'm a new day rising
I'm a brand-new sky to hang the stars upon tonight

And what a sky it was... Can't remember how many times I've seen them between their mad 1995 Reading Festival debut and last night's awesome gig but always bring it. Great fun.

Tonight, Tonight.... Well last night. The in the rain at with old - in all senses - friends. Lush.

Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave
Without leaving a piece of youth....
And the embers never fade
In your city by the Bay
The place where you were born
Believe
Believe in me
Believe, believe

The small role that Cardiff's Heath Park played in the Second World War has been commemorated in the park by Heath Citizens Association.
(Ta for the pics, Kate G!)
At the risk of this sounding a bit like a scene from Life of Brian (or is that Ieuan?), perhaps it should also be noted that the sign was also erected by the Heath Residents Association. Not to be confused with the Heath Citizens Association Cardiff. Well played all involved. 🙌

JAMS JELLIES, Ely Bridge
These days that distant building is home to a firm called Label Needs. Unfortunately you can't actually see the lettering closer up as it's jammed (sorry) up against other buildings. Someone at Label Needs kindly explained that it was originally home to Chivers & Sons, Britain's biggest jams and preserves company more than a century ago, hence the (well preserved - sorry) old painted sign. Any more info on this welcome.

Owen John Thomas, politician and founder of ; has died aged 84. "He knew the streets of his beloved Cardiff like the back of his hand and always had a story for every building," recalls his son, Hywel, who worked with him at the Assembly. Condolences to Mr Thomas' family and friends.

THIS IS YESTERDAY: Holy Manics! 1994 was bookended in a way by the playing first Students Union and later, after their Holy Bible war paint makeover, Astoria. I watched one as a child, and the second as a…child who could now vote. The second show was especially brill. James in his sailor suit was a sight to behold. I’m not saying I was heavily inebriated but I watched half the Astoria set in a mirror on a pillar wondering why Richey and Nicky had swapped places. Were you there?

From Cardiff with love...

I Loves The 'Diff celebrates the Welsh capital in a way nobody's done before. This multi award winning cult brand, which has been havin’ a laff on the Taff since 2009, is for anyone with a passion for Cardiff, or the 'Diff as some of us affectionately call this great little city. It’s inclusive – if you gets it, you’re in the clwb.

Some of our products, such as the Cardiff Heart, and Cardiffornia brand, are inspired by the Welsh capital while others, like the Taffywood (Welshified film title) gifts tickle the great Welsh sense of humour. Our Taffywood gifts are sold in gift shops throughout Wales.

Bursting with great ideas, we’ve featured in all local and Welsh media, gone viral (in a good way), been featured on BBC’s The One Show (Cheers Drive t-shirt worn by Alex Jones), on Radio One with our famous Cardiff Bus Song, and on UK national telly (sadly derailed but very popular Cardiff Underground). We even created a TV show for Made In Cardiff TV celebrating Cardiff’s burger scene (it was lush – The Lansdowne pub won).

With a strong social media presence (64,000+ Twitter followers ain’t bad), we like to share what’s good about our hometown, and let people know what’s occurrin’. We also write a monthly Echo column.
