Our all-new ROCHESTER FILM & TV LOCATIONS TOUR got off to a great start last Friday, and we're repeating it as one of our SATURDAY SMALL GROUP TOURS on 25th March.

The WW2 drama, viewed by over 10 million every Saturday night in the late 70s, which used a rather unlikely building in Rochester for the German HQ!

The current 'cold case' drama series in which Rochester - and one of its best known shops - featured just two years ago.

One person's murder is another person's ex*****on... or vice versa!

Find about some of the absolute WORST in British history on Shane's TUDOR ROCHESTER tour!

ROCHESTER ISN'T JUST ALL ABOUT DICKENS!

Three hundred years before, Rochester was a hugely important part of another important period in British history - the 118 years of TUDOR rule!

Monarchs used Rochester often as a sleepover destination, the affluent and successful Tudors built some amazing homes - many of which still survive in restored glory.

But, some of Rochester's Tudor residents had rather more ignominious lives ... and deaths... than others. Two of them were the subjects of the most barbaric ex*****ons in British history!

Like to learn more?

Join Shane Waterman as he takes you on a trip back almost 500 years to when you could be 'healthy at lunchtime - dead by bedtime'!, and making a deadly bowl of porridge could upset the King so much, he'd have you executed like a Tetley tea bag!

Tudor Rochester is running on Saturday 4th March as one of our Saturday Small Group Tour Club events. These are for over 18s only, and there will be a maximum of ten persons on the tour.

The tour price includes a hot beverage or soft drink at the rest point during the tour.

IT'S BACK!

The ROCHESTER SPPOKY TOUR resumes for winter 2022 - with a new route and new ghostly (or downright weird!) stories on Friday 28th October.

NEW FOR WINTER 2022 is the story of what happened ON THIS TOUR on Friday 28th Feb 2020, when two Ladies got the shock of their lives when they were reviewing the photos they'd taken, in a local pub afterwards.

Slipped in between two images was something which has baffled SPOOKOLOGISTS and Photoshop experts ever since - and you'll get to see it as we send it to you 24 hours before the tour!

I'll be telling you the whole story about how it happened - and the theories behind what can be seen on what everyone who sees it says is the MOST DISTURBING PHOTO THEY'VE EVER SEEN...

ENJOY 25% OFF WITH OUR NEW EARLY BIRD TICKETS TOO when you book at least 28 days prior to your desired tour date.

The Rochester Spooky Tour runs weekly on Fridays from 28th Oct to 23rd Dec.

Last two dates for this winter: 4th and 11th March

For hundreds of years, the monks of St Andrew's Priory in Rochester kept themselves in poverty giving food and shelter to thousands of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury.

Things got so bad, they even considered closing the Priory and merging with another just to survive.

Then, one spring day in 1201, a humble baker made a fateful decision to knock on their doors and ask for shelter.

It cost him his life...

Find out the murderous secret behind the reversal in fortunes of the historic City you see today on THE ROCHESTER SPOOKY TOUR!

This Friday's ROCHESTER SPOOKY TOUR has been postponed as a result of the incoming Storm Eunice.

AMBER STORM WARNING ISSUED FOR MEDWAY - 03:00-21:00 (3am-9pm) Friday 18th February

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind across parts of England, including the south east and Medway, between 3am and 9pm on Friday, 18 February.

Storm Eunice is expected to bring a period of very strong winds which could cause significant disruption.

Where gusts are the strongest, The Met Office is predicting that there is a good chance flying debris may pose a danger to life, with fallen trees, damage to buildings and homes and power lines brought down by the winds.

There is also a good chance that roads, bridges and railway lines could close with delays and cancellations to buses and trains and that power cuts may occur.

It is likely that the winds may cause uprooted trees and falling branches and residents are encouraged to call 01634 333333, during normal working hours, or 01634 304400 after hours, in an emergency, to report any fallen trees Storm Eunice may cause.

Take a guided tour of Charles Dickens' Rochester this Christmas 0 and be prepared for a few Christmassy surprises!

One of the best ways to get the most out of Christmas in Rochester is to take a guided tour with a Dickensian character!

Luke Honeythunder (aka Shane Waterman of Rochester History Guided Tours!) – the self-appointed Life President of the London Philanthropists Society in Dickens last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood - will take you on a voyage of discovery of the links between Rochester, Dickens and the most wonderful time of the year.

In Rochester, in addition to more Dickens-featured buildings than anywhere else in the World, there are some surprising and poignant links that play a BIG part in the way we celebrate Christmas today!

For full information and tickets: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/rochesterhistoryguidedtours/e-lllovg

PLEASE USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO GET TO ROCHESTER!
The traffic can be heavy, and the parking calamitous (now there’s a good Dickensian word!), so please leave the car at home, OR... take the car to a railway station on the lines that serve Rochester, leave it there and take the train for the last part of your journey. It’ll be a lot less stressful!

Next up - another of our judges. And this time, probably the one person all other entrants are glad is a judge and not in competition with them!!:- Chris Pickett

CHRIS PICKETT

When asked if there was anyone who would bring gravitas to the judging panel, Shane Waterman of Visit Rochester UK replied... “Get Chris Pickett. Just get him!”

Chris is a heavyweight when it comes to both the artistic and technical sides of photography; someone who knows the modern digital world inside out, AND the ‘Good Old Days’ of real film, dark rooms and hand dodging of prints – and still practices both! But he also turns out truly stunning images too.

A photographer of extreme passion, Chris is a local lad, born and bred in Medway, fervent about the local beauty that surrounds us here. He always encourages people to embrace photography and to make memories and treasure them for all time.

He also possesses a classic camera collection that would make most enthusiasts sob into their tea!

GENEVIEVE TULLBERG

Genevieve Tullberg manages the two galleries for Nucleus Arts: The Halpern Gallery in Chatham and The Halpern Pop in Rochester, which she has been a key player in establishing as a premier art space with a reputation reaching far beyond Medway.

Genevieve enjoys collaborating with artists and arts organisations in Medway and beyond.

To enter, just go to www.rochesterphotographyawards.co.uk

Over the next few days, we thought we'd give you a bit of background on the people who are going to be casting a critical eye over the submissions - THE JUDGES!

We're starting with our own 'House Photographer' at VRUK - Steve Hartridge Photography....

STEVE HARTRIDGE

Originally from Maidstone, photography has always been a keen interest of his, but was really kick-started when his first daughter was born and he picked up a DSLR and learned fully manual exposure, this time on a digital camera, taking photos of his baby daughter and family days out.

When Visit Rochester UK was launched early in 2020, Steve quickly became the de-facto ‘House Photographer’ for the VRUK page with his warm, inviting image style and range of modern perspectives on Dickens ‘ancient, drowsy’ city.

You'll spot his work on a huge number of posts throughout the past 15 months - specially his de-saturated empty street images of Rochester High Street during lockdown which we featured in one of our videos back in November.

You can also see Steve's work on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevehartridge_photography

You could see your work exhibited in one of the top art galleries in the ancient City of Rochester AND have it included in the 2022 charity calendar in support of www.stepandlearn.org, a charity supporting children with Cerebral Palsy.
