Just had a lovely meeting with Jane to discuss a year long artist residency at Lockhaugh Farm and the surrounding area.

Her project will incorporate walking and creativity in nature throughout the seasons of 2024.

Just beyond the meadow are beautiful walks along the River Derwent through woodland and fields.

My morning walk is part of my morning ritual. It offers me a chance to be quiet in nature.

Being close to nature is one of the reasons why our lovely guests choose to stay at Lockhaugh Farm.

We’re easily accessible by road and public transport yet secluded in nature.

Last night taking in the view a guest txted “This place is heaven”.

We get amazing reviews but that text last night made me reflect a little on the journey …

10 years ago when I returned to England I began to renovate the dilapidated farm with an amazing builder James Lillie. My grandparents had introduced me to the Farm when I was 10 years old and by serendipity decades later it became my family home.

It was during the upheaval of lockdown and the restrictions on travel, that the idea of sharing this little slice of heaven in the Derwent Valley became a reality.

There are lots of special places in this beautiful world - and this is just one that I get share with guests who travel from all over the world and those who are local and just fancy a change of scenery.

Our Lockhaugh Farm Brunches were conceived in conversation with nutritionist chef Hannah .co in 2022 with the aim of gathering people together to press pause with a morning of nourishment through nature, food and connection.

They are an opporunity to immerse yourself in nature and explore the beautiful surroundings of Lockhaugh Farm through a guided walk. Come back to a delicious plant-centric feast, inspired by spring, made with love and enjoyed with friends, old and new.

The brunch menu is nutritionally balanced and centred around plants, with the perfect combination of savoury and sweet. Lovingly made by Hannah, all ingredients are organic and wherever possible, locally & ethically sourced.

It happens every year… I have two magnolia trees in my garden and they are reminders of my long ago life in China but every year after patiently waiting for them to bud and bloom the rain comes and the potential of an amazing display is lost. Hundreds of buds remain unopened and then die making way for a display of leaves in a few weeks. Here is a sample of the beautiful flowers and I leave you to imagine a full bloom.

SUPER EXCITED to Announce this Event in collaboration with Natural History Sound Recordist and Ornithologist Geoff Wildsong and Visual Artist https://www.facebook.com/mike.collier.338
Wondering through the Derwent Valley, each walk will have a different feel and soundscape enhanced by wearing radio headphones to hear the individual songbirds that Geoff picks out with his parabolic reflector microphone. His commentary on each bird's song will uncover an appreciation of how birds communicate and what is involved in each bird’s song.

The Walks will be followed by a delicious plant-based supper on the Saturday evening and breakfast on the Sunday morning where Geoff and Mike will discuss their past collaborations and the publication of Mike's recent book 'Songs of Place and Time'.

You can join us for one or both walks and you're welcome to overnight in our Cottages or Railway Carriages which are beautifully renovated and equipped with everything you need for a great stay. Event Guests are being offered a special 20% discount on the accommodation.

In the meantime enjoy listening to Geoff Sample on Radio 3's The Essay: Birdsong Garden
