If you haven’t explored this beautiful and often overlooked part of north Wales, you really should as the landscape is breathtaking. Blog writer Nearly Uphill has very helpfully created a list of some fabulous walks right on our doorstep within the Clwydian hills.

Looking left out the front door of the Red Shed, you look directly up to Moel Gyw. Your half hour cobweb blasting route to the top starts on the footpath directly behind the Red Shed, taking you up through Wernog Wood, 100metres across a small field, and onto Offa's D**e Path National Trail. Offa’s D**e leads you around the lower slopes of Moel Gyw until a small heathery path heads off up to the trig point at the top. Views stretch north across distant industrial landscapes to the Wirral, to Liverpool and as far as Blackpool tower, and to the West look far across the stunning Vale of Clwyd towards Snowdonia. The tiny dot we are pointing at is Wernog Wood and the Red Shed!

We highly recommend continuing this walk onto the Raven Inn, a warm and welcoming community pub in Llanarmon Yn Ial, with very tasty grub.

Or head in the other direction along Offa’s D**e to Moel Fenlli and Moel Famau… all in walking distance from our cosy Red Shed.

This recent review says it all… “The Red Shed was such a lovely place to spend our first year anniversary, and we would definitely recommend this to anyone hoping to visit.

The bed was comfy and the kitchen was well equipped with all the necessary amenities. At times it rained, but the wood fire kept us cosy and the Shed itself is well insulated. The chairs and fire pit outside was great for reading and lounging. As for walks: there are plenty of trails around, but we loved venturing into the forest and taking in the countryside views at the other end.

The nearby town of Ruthin (approx. 7 mins drive) had all the essentials: Tesco, Aldi, coffee shops and restaurants. We ventured to Bodnant Garden, which is an hour drive away but definitely worth a visit if you bring a car.

We spent most of our time enjoying the peace and quiet of the Red Shed. Claire and Rob have done a fantastic job of creating an atmosphere of being in nature while never being too out of reach. We will definitely be staying here again!”

We are your hosts Rob and Claire

As a mechanic and builder, Rob is fascinated by how things work and how they are made. He loves the challenge of creating the unusual and Wernog Wood has given him the perfect opportunity to renovate old buildings and to build quirky new structures…. the Red Shed being just one of these.

Claire is a jeweller and works with customers to design one-off pieces, often incorporating elements from a customer’s old jewellery.

Alongside these things that already keep us busy, we run a variety of traditional and contemporary craft courses. Taught by practicing artists and crafts people, courses are tailored for complete beginners as well as those wanting to further their skills… to find out more check out Wernog Wood

It took us four years to find the perfect peaceful spot to run our courses; a place where our visitors can truly escape the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. After traipsing around nearly fifty properties, we finally found Wernog Wood hidden within this beautiful secluded woodland.

When we arrived in September 2017, the house had not been lived in for 15 years and our predecessor, Dot, had lived here alone for forty years prior to that. As you can imagine, the whole place needs considerable renovation... luckily Rob is a multi-skilled builder and mechanic who is up for a challenge... but we were keen to get the business up and running before completing house renovations.

So if you are planning to pay us a visit, don’t be surprised to find some piles of rubble and a rough looking house (our house that is, not the Red Shed!)… but the rest of the place is beautiful.

All furnishings in the cosy Red Shed are handmade by your hosts, including this beautiful handmade greenwood bed made by Rob. One of the most regular comments left by our visitors is how comfy the bed is.

… and even better, you could make your own greenwood bed frame during a course taught by Rob in Wernog Wood
