The Medieval Island chapel of St Nicolas. In the 18th Century the building was converted into look-out for revenue officers. However, by 1904 it was in the hands of the War Office who used it as a store for the island battery but now ordered its demolition, amid local outcry. Fortunately, the demolition was halted and in 1911 local shipping magnate Sir Edward Hain, Builder of Treloyhan Manor, generously paid for the chapel’s restoration, which restored its medieval appearance and layout. The chapel sits on what everyone knows as The Island its Cornish name is Pendinas which means ‘fortified headland’ and in accordance with what seams to be a West Cornish tradition of the literal naming of places, for instance Penwith translates as Headland at the end, the island is in fact a small headland that was once an Iron aged promontory fort, linked to the mainland by a narrow isthmus on which the Town of St Ives would evolved.

Being a small locally owned family business it’s important to us to support the things that matter to our comunity. 🌿🌳 Planting for the Future in St Ives! 🌳🌿

We were delighted to join the fantastic team of volunteers at St Ives Orchard on Tuesday, 18th February, to plant 40 trees in the newly awarded nature reserve at Penbeagle! 🌱✨

With a mix of Oak, Rowan, Hazel, and Birch, these trees will help create a thriving habitat for local wildlife and a greener, healthier future for our community. At Cornish Riviera Holidays, we’re passionate about giving back to the environment and supporting sustainable initiatives in St Ives. 💚
