Big Announcement!

Cornish Riviera Holidays is proud to announce that we are stepping into the role of headline sponsors for the 2025 St Ives Biathlon which will be held on Saturday 28th June 2025.

2025 simultaneously marks the 27th year of the St Ives Biathlon and the 67th anniversary of the St Ives Surf Life Saving Club which was originally formed in 1958.

As the oldest independent holiday letting agency in St Ives, we believe it is important to give something back to the community we are so lucky to live in. As such, we were keen to support the St Ives Biathlon. We began as a supporting sponsor last year and were extremely excited and only too happy to step up when asked earlier this year to become the headline Sponsor as our ethos is and always has been to put our community at the heart of everything we do.

Godrevy Lighthouse was built in 1859 on Godrevy Island in St Ives Bay, Cornwall. Standing approximately 300 metres (980 ft) off Godrevy Head, it marks the Stones reef, which has been a hazard to shipping for centuries.

No week of pew ends would be complete without featuring the 15th century mermaid of Zennor at St Senara's church. Mermaids featured in the medieval Cornish miracle plays, where they represented the dual nature of Christ; the mermaid being both fish and human and Christ being both God and man. Three miracle plays or Ordinalia survive, dating from the mid 14th century and written in the Cornish language.

Wolf Rock Lighthouse, located about 8 miles southwest of Land's End, Cornwall, stands on a solitary rock that has long been a hazard for ships. The lighthouse was completed in 1869 after nearly a decade of difficult construction due to harsh weather and the remote location. The tower, designed by James Walker, was built using 3,296 tons of granite, with the first 39 feet of the structure being solid to withstand the powerful waves. The light first shone in January 1870.

Over the years, the lighthouse underwent several upgrades. In 1941, during World War II, it was damaged by aerial cannon fire, leading to repairs and enhancements, including the installation of a radiotelephone and electrification in 1955. In 1972, Wolf Rock became the first lighthouse in the world to be equipped with a helipad, greatly improving access for maintenance and crew changes. The lighthouse was automated in 1987 and continues to operate today with a solar-powered light, flashing once every 15 seconds, monitored remotely by Trinity House.

The lighthouse's history also includes notable events, such as being the first ocean rock lighthouse to be resupplied by helicopter in 1948, when the keepers were stranded due to bad weather for over 100 days. Despite its challenging location, Wolf Rock Lighthouse remains a crucial navigational aid and a testament to the resilience of maritime engineering.

The minesweeper HMS Wave washed ashore at St. Ives, Cornwall in 1952.

HMS Wave had anchored in St. Ives Bay to wait out a passing storm. However, the worsening conditions caused her anchor chain to break. Unable to get underway quickly enough, the 1,300 ton vessel was blown aground. The impact ruptured her hull, causing some minor flooding.

A breeches bouy was rigged up and allowed sixty-two of her crew to be taken ashore. The remainder stayed aboard to conduct damage control until other Royal Navy ships responded. Once the storm had subsided, HMS Wave was pulled from the beach and towed to Devonport Dockyard for repairs. HMS Wave would serve for almost another 10 years before being scrapped in 1962.

Happy Blue Monday!
The amazing level of blue mineral formations inside a 1850's Cornish copper mine.
Looks like the old miners missed a bit, I bet they would be kicking themselves if they see this now. Note the original wood planks on the floor to allow pushing the wheelbarrows full of rock and ore a lot easier.

St Ives Harbour Master Notice of planned 'beach recycling' works
Location: Main slipway opposite the Sloop Inn
Date: Monday 30th September and Tuesday 1st October
As you may be aware, there has been significant sand accretion on the main slipway and the beach opposite the Sloop Inn. This sand is now also causing issues on the highway and it has therefore been agreed that beach recycling will be undertaken to relocate sand which has built up to areas of erosion within the harbour area.
Please note:
- Plant will be operating 3 hours either side of low water on these days and
cordons will be set up to provide plant pedestrian separation
- There will be limited access down the main slipway and some access points
to the harbour area will be closed during this time
- All pedestrians are to keep well clear of moving plant and obey the
instructions of the safety marshals
- Should you have any questions regarding this activity please contact the Harbour Master on 07933173958
- This activity is relocating sand within the harbour area and no sand will be removed from the harbour or the St Ives Bay sand cell
