While our systems were all down yesterday for maintenance work, we took the opportunity to get out and walk together - something we rarely have the chance to do as a team. The weather eventually brightened up enough to show off the lovely autumn colours around Salisbury!

We're so pleased to support Herman and Amala, our hosts at Hotel Anaterve on the island of La Gomera. They're planting hundreds of specimens to restore the tree canopy on the slopes around their property. We've donated a young ficus Amstel and a cupressus, which are now growing in our name!

“The route was excellent; we loved the variety of the trails and scenery.”

Beverley and John walked our Basque Pyrenees route in September, hiking through the hills and along dramatic coastal paths, really making the most of what this route has to offer.

They opted for the slightly hairier option on the decent into Pasaia, as you can see in one of their photos, but do not worry if this is not your style, there is a gentler option available!

These words from Edward Allhusen, following an adventure through the hills of Southern Tuscany, were just too good to keep to ourselves:

“A very, very well planned wander through the vine clad, rolling hills and ancient, fortified hill top towns of Tuscany where steep narrow alleys often resort to time worn steps and corners that had not anticipated the arrival of motor cars 500 years later. We quite expected to meet a fourteenth century merchant clad in dark robes with fur collar hurrying to deliver an order for marble required by Michelangelo or more wine for yet another Medici banquet. Surely Dante rested beneath this gnarled oak, quill in hand, as he pondered on his next work of genius."

Some gorgeous photos from Kate and Michael, who recently completed our Vikos Gorge route.

"The Kapesovo Circuit up the (more than!) 1000 steps and to Beloi Lookout was a great first hike for us, and Guest House Thoukoudidis in Kapesovo and Joannna’s wonderful rustic cooking as well as her focus on wild-picked mushrooms was a highlight.

"The Kapesovo to Monodendri hike felt very long, but beautiful weather and incredible views (and Vitsa Bridge) made up for any weariness! Sunday’s Vikos Gorge hike was so varied geographically and with the changing flora zones."

On Foot En Route! October is when we are hard at work planning and going out to recce new On Foot routes. If you look at any route on our website, you will see who from our expert team has put their walking boots on and tried, tested and graded the route.

There is an art to creating our hiking routes. Wherever possible we aim for linear walks with great final destinations, and we are ultra picky about getting this right!

Routes are often suggested by our local contacts who live in the area and know the terrain and all its wonders inside out. This means that you can walk any of our routes with the knowledge of a local.

Lovely to see this keen, young bear enjoying his visit to Salisbury on a beautiful October day. We'll keep some marmalade sandwiches ready at the On Foot office, just in case he needs one later.

The season of mists continues and where better to enjoy the golden shades of autumn than in the remote hills and valleys of north-western Portugal https://www.onfootholidays.co.uk/routes/northern-portugal/

This linear walk will take you along an old Roman road, across ancient bridges and through a rich autumnal landscape. Make sure to look out for wild mushrooms, blackberries, the pumpkin harvest and glorious russet barrosã cattle.

There is still time to make a UK autumn getaway! Starting in Lynmouth, our 4-night Coastal Exmoor route takes in the North Devon and Somerset coasts, plus some lovely inland stretches too. More details here https://www.onfootholidays.co.uk/routes/england-coastal-exmoor/

If you fancy walking the landscape of R D Blackmore’s ‘Lorna Doone’, cream teas, oyster suppers, and maybe add a ride on a steam train on the West Somerset Railway, this could be the autumn getaway for you.

P.S. Sarah Baxter (former deputy editor of Wanderlust) recently walked the entire South West Costal Path and recommended the Coastal Exmoor stretch. Find her film here https://www.thetimes.com/travel/destinations/uk-travel/walk-south-west-coast-tips-x3lctk00x

More news of the Pommie Pilgrimage from Richard Tucker, our local contact in the Peak District. A group walked from Sheffield Cathedral to Youlgrave over three days, as part of their campaign to raise funds for new facilities at Youlgrave church by walking between all 42 of England's Anglican cathedrals during 2024. They're on track to complete the task by the end of October.

On Foot Holidays is pleased to support them, and wishes them well in the sprint to the finish line!

Discover the Vikos Gorge. At 12km long and 900m deep it makes this one of the most dramatic of all our walking holidays. Located in north-western Greece, close to the border with Albania, this route offers magnificent landscapes of exceptional ecological value.
https://www.onfootholidays.co.uk/routes/greece-the-vikos-gorge/

The mountainous landscape, famed for its spectacular views and unspoilt stone villages, offers birdwatching and hiking that is second to none.

Overnighting at the Astraka refuge at 2000m is optional, but makes the final dramatic walk to Dragon Lake more achievable!

You may also choose to add a couple of nights in Corfu at the end of your holiday for some rest and relaxation, island-style.

The very best of the Lighthouse Way in Galicia - huge skies and long white beaches.

Thanks to Jane and Sara Harper for sending these photos from their recent trip:
"Galicia is a wonderful place, reminiscent of Spain in the 1970’s before mass tourism and commercialism took hold. The trip was amazing and we came home buzzing with energy and enthusiasm and looking forward to booking our next one (with On Foot Holidays, of course!)."
