The Cathedral Library and Archive present December's book of the month: 'The Golden Legend' by Jacobus de Voragine (about 1229-1298). The Golden Legend is a collection of hagiographies (stories about the lives of saints) and of Christian festivals. This copy is one of 42 incunabula kept in the Cathedral Library and was printed by Wynkyn de Worde who worked with the William Caxton, the first person to set up a printing press in England. Pictured, the book is open at the hagiography of Saint Nicholas. The woodcut illustration shows Nicholas with his Bishop’s mitre (hat) and crozier (staff).
