Marine Art
We all know that the natural world inspires many works of art in many shapes and forms and the underworld of our seas and oceans is no exception to this. Marine environments are as rich in diversity, splendor and wonder as any other place on Earth, or space and for many of our nature-loving members that is the only motivation they need to grab their camera and head for the sea. The opportunity to bear witness to incredible marine flora and fauna, whether it is the grandeur of ancient bedrock gardens festooned with fluffy snow- white sponges (deadman’s fingers) or to seek new ways to photograph the familiar or not so familiar, the prospect of capturing that ‘special’ picture is only limited by the imagination. The level of photographic knowledge and technique required is in no way a barrier to portraying an attention-grabbing vista or some unusual animal behavior, for divers who manage to be in the right place at the right time. With either a point and shoot camera for novice photographers or a more technically, intricate camera, for experienced photographers, camera-art can be created. For example, a simple compact camera (without its waterproof housing) was used to present this striking image of a lone mussel anchored, by its sticky byssus threads, to an intertidal rock, photo 1. An intriguing photo as mussels are normally found huddled together in large colonies on rocks, hard surfaces and even wrecks, filter feeding on suspended organisms flowing around them. However, this lonely critter would appear to have a bit of a wait for its next meal from the incoming tide. A prime example of how mussels are generally found is photo 2. This incredibly, beautiful close-up illustrates, in detail, the unlocked bi-valve shells of mussels as they expose their frilly, feathered, folded skin, to the surrounding moving water sieving out tasty minute organisms. Another close up of a dahlia anemone, photo 3, highlights the delicate banding of it’s outstretched stinging tentacles awaiting its unsuspecting prey such as, shrimps or small fish. Whether a solo dahlia or clustered together like garden flowers in a shallow rocky gully dahlias are a deadly beauty for fledgling small marine creatures riding the surge of a sea current. The more experienced photographer with advanced photographic knowledge and techniques are able to depict more dramatic images such as above and below water scenes, morphing the subject of common kelp seaweed to an almost otherworldly, dreamlike seascape, photo 4. For those photographic enthusiasts out there this clever piece of art was created using a wide angle lens, using a strobe (flash) light under the water and natural exposure above the water. Scuba diving has many strings to its bow and can inspire and extend the enjoyment of many hobbies or interests. (publish in Saltburn Talk of the Town January 2024, author J. It was with a heavy heart that members of Cleveland Divers learned the news that Mark Askew had died suddenly on Wednesday 18th October, whilst walking his dogs. A long standing member of the club for over 15 years Mark took great pleasure from every aspect of scuba diving, training new members, social and fund raising events throughout those years. His quite disposition belied the true quality of his friendship and the thoughtful support he willingly gave to experienced divers and novice divers alike. Whether it was shore or boat diving Mark was an active diving member, although boat diving was a bit of a challenge as he suffered more than a little from seasickness, but not enough to deter him from enjoying
the event.

Over the years many members have accrued memorable times with Mark such as,... ‘Mark’s unflappable nature was a calming influence on my first night dive when I suffered a mini anxiety attack.’ … ‘Mark was a keen bird watcher and used his skill for spotting well camouflaged marine animals, saw my first British octopus when diving with Mark’…’Mark inspired me to dive the Connel Bridge drift dive which has become my favourite dive when I visit Appin in Scotland’… Mark was a great diving buddy but I remember some friendly competition during rugby matches when his boys Phillip and Robert played my boys on opposing teams.

Mark and his wife, Allison's, support for the club’s social events and fund raising events was always generous and much appreciated. Although in recent years Mark retired from diving his contributions to the club and the memories he created live on. He is sorely missed and our thoughts are with Allison, Phillip, Robert and his family.

Now for some more details!

We are running our annual 4 day event at the Farne Islands, from July 13th to 16th aimed at divers who are wanting to finish off part of their Dive Leader Qualification ready for the summer.

Planned for 4 days of diving from a hard boat at the Farne Islands, our Dive Leader Expedition Training Days are a fantastic opportunity to get some top class diving in, while making good progress towards your Dive Leader qualification.

From Thursday July 13th until Sunday 16th, we will be diving from Billy Shiels’ Glad Tidings, out of Seahouses, a great platform for diving from with a long history taking divers out to the Farne Islands.

The link here gives you some of the feedback from last two year's successful events

2022 - https://www.bsac.com/news-and-blog/farne-islands-expedition-success

2021 - https://www.bsac.com/news-and-blog/diver-training-days-hit-the-spot

Over the 4 days you will get an opportunity to be involved in the dive management, leading dives, adding to your experience dives, and as many of the Dive Leader lessons as we can, with a small team of experienced instructors working with you on your personal development, to get as much out of the weekend as possible. We hope to get to a variety of dive sites, which the Farnes gives us, wrecks, reefs, and fingers crossed even to play with the seals!
We plan to dive sites to a maximum depth of up to 35m, so would recommend that you bring an appropriate redundant air source, equipment for open sea diving such and dSMB and good torch / signalling devices. We will do two dives a day, so cylinders to allow for that, with refills in the evening.

The fee for the event covers the four days of diving with instruction. Accommodation, food and air fills are separate.
To book on this, follow this link;

https://www.bsac.com/events/dl-exped-farnes-island-13-16th-july-2023-19397---8541/

Booking sooner, rather than later will help with planning and also accommodation etc.
