Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK 🇬🇧

Scarborough Castle, perched on a prominent headland between two bays in North Yorkshire, has a history spanning over 2,500 years. Initially favored by prehistoric settlers, it later served as a Roman signal station and a Viking haven. The Normans rebuilt it in stone during the 1130s, and it played a significant role in medieval military history, enduring sieges from English kings and Scottish forces during the Hundred Years' War. The castle was also heavily bombarded during the English Civil War and World War II.

Scarborough Open Air Theatre…

Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre was built by Scarborough Corporation in the 1930’s. The Lord Mayor of London opened the Open Air Theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens in 1932, and audiences flocked to see ‘Merrie England’, the first production to be staged at the outdoor venue.

The theatre underwent a major refurbishment and on 20 May 2010, the newly refurbished Scarborough Open Air Theatre was officially opened by The Queen of the United Kingdom accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Since its official re-opening, the Scarborough OAT has played host to some of the music industry’s biggest stars, including Elton John, Britney Spears, Gary Barlow, Kylie, Noel Gallagher, Lionel Richie, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Biffy Clyro, Little Mix, Lewis Capaldi and many more.

There is also lots of other activities including the miniature railway that runs from the open air theatre to the sea life centre.

Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, which is also known as pancake day but for locals in Scarborough it’s a special day

For over 100 years pancake day has been known as ‘Skipping Day’ in Scarborough.
The Mayor rings the pancake bell at 12pm in the town centre and then fancy dress pancake races start. Then everyone heads down to the South Bay to have a skip.

When this tradition first started it is thought to have been fisherman sorting there ropes and nets for fishing and any unsuitable they would pass them to the children to skip on the foreshore road.

This tradition has kept going all these years!! But remember the Foreshore Road will be closed off to cars to allow people to skip in safety
