What a treat! The dawn chorus echoed all around the trees - ducks, gulls, geese, blackbirds, crows and a couple of owls having a conversation across the open air theatre. Video to follow!

Purple Dawn 🌅

You wouldn’t be able to tell with the thick grey clouds we have at the moment, but this morning started with a spectacular sunrise. Purples and blues, turned into pinks, then orange and red. Dawn on the beach is often the most beautiful time of the day ❤️

Winter Dawn in Scarborough

Last week was filled with dark and cold mornings. With sunrise after 8am it was dark on our morning walk, but here are a few snaps. The reflections on the sand made for some great pics!

🌅 SUNRISE 🌄

Well, it has been a bit of a grey start to the year, not at all like this time last year - but here are some of last week’s sunrise pics.
Even on a cold, grey, cloudy morning, you just can’t beat that view!
One morning a sparrowhawk joined us on our walk up the cliffs. We often spot these birds of prey around the fields above Scalby Mills, but this one seemed to be right over the beach 🦅🌊

Aren’t we lucky to see this view every morning?

🌅 SUNSET 🌅

You just can’t beat a beautiful winter sunset in Scarborough. Unless it’s a beautiful Scarborough sunrise! For this year’s new year resolution we started taking pictures of the sunrise every morning from the same spot at North Bay, with our favourite view over towards the castle. We’ll be doing the same again in 2024, and will share all the pictures, because whatever the weather (rain, cloud, fog, snow, or glorious sunshine) that view is stunning!

👻💀 POLTERGEIST 💀👻

Scarborough has a few documented poltergeists, but the creepy activities at the Clifton Hotel have to be one of the scariest we’ve heard.

You’ll learn all about what visitors and staff have witnessed at checkpoint 11 of our Ghost Trail… but here are a few details to whet your appetite.

It is common for all the lights to switch on in the middle of the night, but only on one floor (the second floor is where most of the activity happens). Kettles have switched themselves on in the night too, and the TVs are known to turn on en masse - during the daytime as well as at night… but all on one floor only. It’s all a bit weird!

Have you stayed in the Clifton Hotel? Let us know in the comments if you’ve experienced any supernatural activity while you were there.

💀👻 FREE GHOST TRAIL 👻💀

Head to scarboroughtours.com/ghost-trail to follow the free section of our ghost tour. You’ll learn about 7 different local ghost stories - including the sad tale of Lydia Bell. If you’re feeling brave you can complete the full trail with an extra 10 ghostly checkpoints. Full details on the website.

But back to Lydia… the girl in the pink, or crimson dress, depending on which version of the story you hear 💃

Lydia was the daughter of a wealthy confectioner from York, who owned Bell Mansion on St Nicholas Street (next to the town hall). Only a teenager, Lydia fell head over heels for a married soldier who was stationed at the barracks in the Castle grounds. One night Lydia snook out to meet her lover, dressed in her best pink (or crimson) dress, but met a grisly fate. Her lifeless body was discovered the next morning on the sands at South Bay. Some people said she had been strangled, others say she was thrown from the cliffs and washed up onto the shore as the tide came in. Either way, the last person to see her alive was definitely Val, her married lover.

And while Val escaped the law by fabricating alibis, he later confessed on his deathbed - too late for any retribution or peace. Lydia however, was left to wander the town aimlessly and there have been countless sightings of her spectre in several locations - including on the beach, where she can be seen frantically running, possibly trying to evade her killer.

If you want to read the full story - head to checkpoints 3, 15 & 16 on the ghost trail, and all will be revealed.

Happy ghost hunting 👻👻🎃🎃💀💀

Completing our trails are easy peasy! 🌟🥾📸

Simply head to the website, click “purchase a trail” in the menu bar and select you trail.

Sign up for an account - meaning if you lose signal, or only want to complete part of the trail, you can log back in at a later date to complete it.
Download the map to your device (we recommend doing this as mobile signal in Scarborough, especially the old town, can vary). You can also print the map off if you’d prefer.

Make your way to the nearest checkpoint and off you go. You can join the Old Town trail at any checkpoint - the route is a loop starting and finishing at our office on Eastborough.

Follow the directions to the next checkpoint, and when you get there check out all the information we’ve gathered for that location.

We’ve collected hundreds of stories, superstitions, folklore tales and interesting facts about our favourite spots in the Old Town.

🙏 And I’d just like to say a huge thank you to all of our trail testers - we’re busy making amends and tweaking things from the feedback we’ve already received. Our trails will continue to improve over the coming months thanks to locals generously giving their time to test out the trail - if you’d like a go, get in touch and we’ll send you free access! 🙏

GET OUT AND EXPLORE 🥾📸

Tomorrow is the big day - our Old Town Heritage & Folklore Trail will be going live on our website.

We’ve spent months researching and speaking to Scarborough residents to collect the best local stories, knowledge, folklore tales and more, and have collated it all into a walking trail around the Old Town.
Learn about Scarborough’s history and heritage on the go, with 15 checkpoints covering all kinds of subjects - fishing, sailing, ship building, seaside traditions, castles, piers, markets, churches, ghosts, ghouls, superstitions, smugglers, pirates, shipwrecks and more… we’ve tried to squeeze all this info into the trail.

And with the weather being unseasonably warm at the moment, what better reason is there to get out and explore the town?

We’ll be sharing a few posts over the coming days to show you how to purchase the trail, and make the most of it on your device (or how to print it out if you’d prefer).

Enjoy 📸🥾

CHECKPOINT 14 PREVIEW

This is Paradise House, it has a long history - including the birth place of George Cayley (the “father of aviation”), the Graham Sea Training School, and a very well known smugglers hideout.

It is said that the well in the garden was regularly stacked to the brim with contraband, and its position at the top of the hill made it easy to keep a watchful eye out for Revenue Officers.

Just a snippet from our Old Town Heritage Trail - each checkpoint is packed with information about the history and folklore associated with each location. We have loads of tales of smugglers and pirates, mariners’ superstitions, ghost stories and more - this is not your average walking trail.

CHECKPOINT 13 PREVIEW 📸

Ever noticed the ruins at St. Mary’s Church? These are the remains of the north aisle and quire, destroyed in the 1645 siege at the castle. It was never rebuilt but shows just how large (and important) the church has been in the past.
One of the oldest churches, it is believed to have been built in the 1100s by masons working on the castle, and occupied by Cistercian monks.

For loads more information on the history and heritage of Scarborough’s old town, join the Old Town Heritage Trail at scarboroughtours.com

Written by locals, we’ve collected folklore tales, superstitions, and inside local knowledge on each of our checkpoints, so you can explore like a pro!

What a beautiful day it has been in Scarborough Old Town, and perfect weather for doing a test run of our Heritage Walking Trail… just look at this view from one of the check points 📸

We just have a few finishing touches to add, and some tweaks to the website to make, but it’ll be ready to go live by the end of the month 🤞🤞

We’re looking for a few volunteers to help test out the route, and double check everything on the website works as it should. If you’d be interested in getting early access, please get in touch and we’ll send you the details.
