Thixendale and the Robert Fuller Gallery
Thixendale is a tiny village nestled in a valley in the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds just over 30 miles / 48km from the cottages. This Wednesday Walk allows you to see Thixendale and enjoy some of the beautiful dry valleys that traverse the area, with rolling hills, wild open spaces, fresh air, and rich wildlife make this region the perfect place for anyone who loves the great outdoors.
This walk is about 5.8 miles / 9.3 km long and takes you, predominately, across field tracks and paths which can get very muddy and slippery in wet weather. You will walk along part of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, which passes to the east end of the village. There are also a few steep climbs which offer extraordinary views along the various dry valleys though can be quite exposed in windy conditions.

As you return to the village the walk takes you south along the road for approximately a mile to reach the famous Robert Fuller Gallery. At the gallery you can see a stunning collection of Robert’s artworks though you may want to check their website before heading to the gallery.

Cawthorn Roman Camps
Nearly 2,000 years ago the Romans built a group of fortifications overlooking the central moorlands of the National Park. In wooded countryside on the edge of the North York Moors lies one of northern England's lesser-known Roman sites, a trio of Roman military enclosures known as Cawthorn Roman Camps.
For our Wednesday Walk this week we have chosen a great hidden gem which is also great for the entire family. It starts and finishes from the car park adjacent to the site which is just over 25 miles / 40km from the cottages. To get to the Camps follow the link and download the attached route card. If you follow the official postcode (YO18 8HN) your satnav will take you to the wrong location. This fascinating historic site is just over 5miles / 8km from the bustling and vibrant market town of Pickering.
At the view point the splendour of the North York Moors unfolds in front of you, and the woodland walk whilst it is only 1mile / 1.6km is delightful. In places you can clearly see the deep, wide ditches that helped defend each Camp, and you can descend into the ditch bottom and climb the inner bank to get a closer look. Dogs are welcome visitors to the Camps but please keep your dog on a short lead.

Forge Valley Woodlands
Our Wednesday walk this week takes you to a beautiful Site of Special Scientific Interest that follows the River Derwent, Raincliffe Woods which is in the deep gorge of Forge Valley. The area supports an abundant and varied population of wildlife and wildflowers. As you wander around the woodland at this time of year you can see how it springs into life, with birds singing, bees buzzing and squirrels scampering up trees. You have pungent smell of wild garlic, and the valley is carpeted with a rich array of wildflowers including the wood anemone, the yellow flowers of the aconite, primroses, and sweet violets. These flowers are a not just a cheerful sign of spring but also provide nectar for the butterflies.
The walk starts and finishes at Dog Bark Bend car park, approx. 3.5 miles /5.6km north of East Ayton (A170) and approximately 5.3miles /8.5km from the cottages.

Snowdrops in the Woodland
Snowdrops are one of the first signs that spring is on its way, so why not let the spectacular sight of snowdrops bring you out of hibernation. Wrap up warmly this winter and enjoy the breath-taking display of snowdrops at Burton Agnes. I loved walking through the woodland admiring the delicate tiny yet hardy snowdrop flowers though what is truly fantastic is the huge number of these flowers it is truly a magnificent white carpet of flowers.
From the 1st February to 23rd February 2025, thousands of hardy snowdrops push through the cold winter ground to create a magnificent ‘white carpet’ across the woodland floor here at Burton Agnes. Walking peacefully among these makes a truly memorable day out at the end of the long winter. The beautiful little flowers grow in numbers each year and are such a welcome sight. This biblical symbol of hope is a great reminder that winter eventually gives way to spring and announces the new season.
Wood fired meals made on the premises using produce grown from the walled garden, hot drinks, home baked cakes and lots of other food and drink are being served in the courtyard for you to enjoy.
This is my favourite event at this time of year as the snowdrops are an indicator of the shifting seasons and a sure sign that warmer weather is on its way.

SEA LIFE Scarborough where you can dive into the stunning underwater world and get up close to 2,500 amazing creatures in over 50 incredible indoor and outdoor displays. Watch the cheeky Humboldt Penguins waddle and swim around Penguin Island and if you are lucky, they may be practicing their football skills. You can now get closer than ever before as you make your way through their walk-through home.
Visit Otter River where you may be entertained by the playful couple of Asian Short Clawed Otters though they were hard fasted asleep when I visited them. At the Seal Hospital you can see the seal pup patients during their rehabilitation, where these beautiful creatures are nursed back to health before being released back into the wild. You can also see the four resident common seals swimming and showing off in their pool.
Take a walk on the ocean floor as you make your way through the incredible tropical ocean tunnel where you will see the sharks circling above your head or you can just marvel at the majestic loggerhead sea turtle.
There is so much more to see and do, including the beautiful Copperband Butterflyfish, Clownfish, Moon Jellyfish, Big-bellied Seahorses, Weedy Sea Dragons, and lots of beautifully coloured coral. There is so much to see and do with plenty to keep everyone entertained.
In the Rainforest Adventure area, you can immerse yourself in a world of creepy crawlies, lurking lizards and curious critters. Come just centimetres away from Green Tree Pythons and be mesmerised at the incredible colours of Poison Arrow Dart Frogs
A great place for a family trip out but remember the venue is cashless.

This week our “Wednesday walk” is right on our doorstep and takes you on a circular route from Cloughton via Hayburn Wyke. The walk is 5miles / 8km and follows an exhilarating stretch of the Cleveland Way National Trail footpath, before returning along the track-bed of the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line. You start and finish at Cloughton Station, approx. 1.5miles / 2.4km from the cottages, with parking on the roadside on Station Lane.
What3words for start of the walk ///punks.sang.each
On the walk you will discover some of the unexpected hidden gems of the Yorkshire Coast, the wooded valley of Hayburn Wyke and a magnificent rocky cove complete with double waterfall. From the coastal path you will also see some fantastic views of the Yorkshire coastline and on a clear day you can see as far as Scarborough Castle over 4miles away. This is a great walk to blow away the cobwebs, take the dog for a run, or go fossil hunting and it is on the doorstep by the cottages.
The initial part of the walk and the return route follows an easy, firm, and level railway track-bed, known as the Cinder Track, there is also a short section following a quiet country lane. With the outward coastal part of the walk following the coastal path but keep clear of the cliff edges which may be unstable it also can be slippery. The route at Hayburn Wyke involves a steep descent and ascent, often on rough steps which are muddy and slippery.
