This week our Wednesday walk takes in the beautiful Raincliffe Woods, it starts and finishes at Green Gate car park, off Hazel Hill / Low Road and is just under 10 miles / 16km from the cottages. This walk is about 5miles / 8km long and mainly meanders across field tracks and on woodland paths though there is a short section along the road at the start of the walk. The woodland tracks can get very muddy and slippery in wet weather there are also several climbs and descents, one climb being fairly steep, though once you get to the top the views are extraordinary, on a clear day.
This is a fantastic circular walk through the ancient semi-native woodland at Raincliffe Woods. Now part of a National Nature Reserve, it is an oasis of flora and fauna and is a great place to visit at all times of the year. In Autumn it produces a huge variety of spectacular colours throughout the woodland from both the trees, berries and fungi. The walk it takes you along a boardwalk path running parallel to the edge of the beautiful Throxenby Mere, which is a great place to sit and have a picnic, if it is not raining though I was not so lucky.
The walk came from a book “AA 50 Walks in North Yorkshire”.

Filey Fishtive Tree
If you fancy a visit to see a Christmas tree with a difference, this hidden gem at Filey is a perfect place for you. Filey’s Giant Fishtive Tree which nestles among the boats of the famous Coble Landing is returning this year. The tree is created, from lobster and crab pots and all things fishy built by the town’s fishermen as a fitting way to celebrate the towns heritage. All the decorations and bunting are provided by the school children and youth groups of the town.
The light switch on event is between 5-6pm on the Saturday 14th December 24, this was postponed from 7th December as a result of storm Darragh. Following the light switch on there will also be an exciting return add to the celebrations, the fireworks are back. The tree will remain lit during the hours of darkness until early January. This is a lovely Christmas tradition that combines local history, and the festive season.
Although Filey was historically a fishing village there is a picture-perfect beach, so while visiting the town, why not try some fish and chips and take your four-legged friend for a walk on the beautiful beach. Check the signage as there are seasonal restrictions on dog-walking in some areas however most of the beach is dog-friendly at any time of year.

Whitby Krampus Run
The streets of Whitby will be hosting their tenth annual event that brings to life the Krampus legend. Krampus, a horned creature from Alpine folklore at where traditionally St Nicholas would reward nice children with gifts, and the Krampus would accompany him, and punish the naughty children.
Each year, attendees don costumes and participate in street parades while embracing local folklore to offer a unique twist on the Krampus legend. The parade usually starts in the afternoon at the Bandstand and winds through Whitby's narrow streets to the Whalebones. The parade includes around 50 Krampuses, fire breathers, and drummers.
Each year, attendees don costumes and participate in street parades while embracing local folklore to offer a unique twist on the Krampus legend. This truly is a unique event mixes tradition and folklore for a one-of-a-kind Christmas experience.
Other highlights of the weekend’s proceedings include Krampus Krumpettes Drumming Performance, The Reindeer Games and of course music, food and drink. Join the Whitby Krampus Run 7th & 8th December 2024 for a thrilling parade celebrating the Krampus legend. Costumes and folklore fun!

Count the 199 steps and get some kippers at Whitby
This circular walk starts and finishes at Whitby swing bridge and follows coastal and field paths as well as pavements within the town. The return route to the town follows an easy, firm, and level railway track-bed, known as the Cinder Track. You will get to see amazing views of the coast, the steep cliffs, the old town, its harbour, the piers, the famous 199 steps and not forgetting the monastic ruins of Whitby Abbey.
At approximately 7miles / 11.2km you will have plenty of time to take in the sights, try some of Whitby’s famous kippers from the town’s only surviving traditional kipper house. Alternatively, why not take a picnic and stop at the secluded cove of Saltwick Bay which is just to the side of the cliff path about a mile east of Whitby. It is a great place for your dogs to run or to search for fossils and if you are lucky, you may find some Whitby Jet.
Whitby is just over 15miles / 25km from the cottages and the nearest car park to the beginning of the walk is Endeavour Wharf Car Park, Langborne Rd, YO21 1YW.

Robin Hood's Bay and Maw Wyke
The Wednesday Walk for this week starts and finishes from the Station car park in the quaint village of Robin Hood's Bay. This lovely circular walk is starts and finishes from the Station car park, Station Rd, YO22 4RE, approximately 12miles / 19km from the cottages.
what3words for start point: ///vented.bridge.aimed
It is approximately 6 miles/ 9.8km long and takes you along the Cleveland Way National Trail from Robin Hoods Bay to Maw Wyke Hole. Along the coastal path you can enjoy stunning panoramic sea views. At Maw Wyke take the path that turns inland from the sea and head up the steep climb through the caravan park before turning left and heading back to Robin Hood’s Bay via the Cinder Track. It is a great walk to take the dog and the entire family as it is fairly easy going for the most part, though there is one steep climb up through the caravan park.
Robin Hoods Bay is a picturesque and curiously complex village that has a long association with smuggling. Folklore suggests that a bolt of silk could be passed from the culvert at the shoreline where the contraband was dropped off to the top of the village without seeing the light of day. Maw Wyke Hole is a sheltered inlet which has become a regular nesting site for a colony of kittiwakes. Though in Yorkshire speak Wyke means, somewhere a boat can be landed.

Wade’s Causeway, Goathland
On this walk you will visit Wade's Causeway thought to be up to 6,000 years old. The Roman Road first recorded on a map in 1720 though recently it has been suggested that it could be medieval, or that it might not be a road at all, but a modified Neolithic or early Bronze Age boundary feature.
There is a National Park car parks at Goathland which is where the walk starts and finishes. Goathland is under 20 miles from the Cottages and is a beautiful, picturesque village famous for steam trains and has a history extending from Viking times. The walk is about 6miles / 9.7km over moorland footpaths, which at this time of year are an expanse of purple heather, farm tracks, minor roads, not forgetting the stepping stones over Wheeldale Beck. The walk will take about 3.5 hours to complete and can be wet under foot and with some quite steep sections. There are many other historical features you will see on the walk but a few of my favourites are St Mary’s Church and the Jubilee Tree and Pinfold.
What3Words for the car park is ///harmonica.isolated.task.
There is a book available in local shops and at the railway stations which will provide walk details, and it is full of lots of information about everything you will see during the walk. “Walks around Goathland including Mallyan Spout & Wades Causeway” by North York Moors National Park.

Danes D**e and Sewerby
Our Wednesday Walk this week takes you to Danes D**e which is a 148-acre nature reserve on Flamborough headland. The d**e is prehistoric in origin and was constructed as a defensive feature, bronze age arrowheads have been found during excavations, and the area is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance.
The reserve contains the most extensive area of woodland on the Headland and is also part of the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast. Whilst the woodland leads down to a small, secluded cove this walk takes you through the woodland and along a bridleway through the golf course to the village of Sewerby, crossing in front of the Sewerby Hall into the village. Where you turn left down a narrow path, just before the main road, before returning along the Headland Way and back though D**e Woods to the car park.
The walk is 4.5km (2.75miles) and will take you approx. 1.5 hours, however I took time out from walking to sit on the seafront at Sewerby and enjoy the scenery and just relax and eat an ice cream. The walk starts and finishes at Danes D**e car park just off the B1255 / Flamborough Road between the villages of Flamborough and Marton (YO15 1DW) which is approx. 40km (25miles) from the cottages. The What3Words for the car park is ///rise.nourished.kettles
The walk came from a book “Ordnance Survey - Outstanding Circular Walks in the Vale of York and Yorkshire Wolds” “Walks around Yorkshire Wolds – 10 walks of 8miles or under by Colin and Dorian Speakman”.
