Great to hear this!
The Italian gardens pictured here are a short walk from our holiday rental Holbeck House on south cliff in Scarborough.
Good news! ๐ Scarboroughโs South Cliff Gardens has been removed from our Register.
From the mid-19th century to the 1930s, several notable landscape architects helped shape the gardens, including Sir Joseph Paxton, who designed the grand Italian Steps, where Victorian ladies and gentlemen would gather for a genteel stroll in their finest attire.
Sadly, coastal erosion and the general deterioration of its condition led to the Gardensโ addition to the Heritage at Risk Register in 2013.
Thanks to the efforts of the Friends of South Cliff Gardens and Scarborough Borough Council (now North Yorkshire Council ) and funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund, the Gardens underwent an extensive two-year ยฃ7m restoration project.
Work included the restoration of 14 shelters, Holbeck Clock Tower and the Italian Steps, as well as the creation of a new accessible route through the Gardens.
