A HISTORY LESSON WHILE ON STAYCATION
By S J Raman, 29/06/2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has us all huddled at home like cavemen, washing our hands every 2 hours (NOT like cavemen!), and wearing masks not usually seen outside of surgical wards.
For the vast majority of people, this is a completely unprecedented situation. Sure, we’ve all read about pandemics before - the black plague in the 1300’s, influenza in 1918. Perhaps some of us remember the more recent ones, such as the “swine flu” outbreak in 2009.
But a global pandemic of this scale is truly unprecedented for most of us. Being forced to stay at home, only going out for necessities, the complete shut- down of “normal life” as we know it, all of this is very new and very scary.
However, is there a lesson we can learn from history here? This isn’t the first time humanity has come up against an invisible enemy that wreaks havoc, so perhaps rewinding the clock might yield us some valuable knowledge?
That is where the quaint, unsuspecting village of Eyam in the Peak District, comes into the picture.
Eyam is located less than 10 miles from our holiday home. It is home to the Eyam Museum, that narrates the fascinating story of a plague outbreak in 1665, and how courageous and forward thinking the populace was in dealing with it.
Between the first death and the last, the people living in Eyam set a lasting example of self-sacrifice by sealing off the entire village from the surrounding areas to stop the plague from spreading.
Centuries before the miracle of antibiotics and modern medicine, the tale of how hundreds of people stepped up to prevent other communities from suffering at the hands of a deadly virus is truly inspirational, and one that we can certainly learn from in these troubling times.
The Eyam Museum tells this fascinating tale, and the history of Eyam itself, and it is located on Hawkhill Road, Eyam, 9.6 miles from Induja. Here is a link for updated information -https://www.eyam-museum.org.uk/news

Chatsworth House – only 10 miles from Induja – are holding a spooky special event for the kids, their Halloween Hoot!
Perfect for kids and adults, their Halloween festival lasts from 26th October to 3rd November, featuring an array of autumnal antics such as a hidden pumpkin hunt, a creepy collection trail featuring horrors from the vaults, an abandoned tunnel and a storytelling circle in the garden.
There is also the Fright Flight into Warlock Wood, where you will find some ghoulish characters and get the chance to scare them off with water! Creepy crafts, facepainting and reptile handling are also all available for your little monsters to try!
Chatsworth is also hosting The Big Draw Festival, encouraging kids (and big kids) to explore drawing for relaxation. Be inspired by the beauty of Chatsworth in autumn and create something – anything you like – between 28th and 31st October.
Chesterfield itself has plenty to explore – the famous and intriguing ‘Crooked Spire’ takes pride of place in the town centre. With a theatre, markets and also Chesterfield Museum to check out, there is plenty to keep you interested!

Transience of the Cherry Blossom - the beauty of life
I was reminded yesterday as I walked on Newfield Crescent, my first spring at Induja, in 2010. I recall the good will of my neighbour who walked up the drive and gave me a bunch of her Cherry Blossoms.
Anyone who has heard of the story of Cherry Blossoms, the Japanese Sakura or Hanami parties would travel far to catch a glimpse of the beauty of these trees full of flower for a few weeks, only to shed them all and carpet the earth in a rain of pink, small and soft petals. In the UK, you may have seen them in the famed gardens in London and Cheshire. Apparently, Keele University has a large collection.
But there, right at my doorstep, a wonderful two weeks unfolded. Both pavements of Newfield Crescent are lined with Cherry Blossoms. In my eyes, these two weeks of sheer beauty are worth waiting for, all year. This gently curving street miraculously turned into the most beautiful place to live, in all of Sheffield.
In just a couple of weeks, the rain of petals started, in all glory. Simply breath-taking.
Yesterday, I noticed the trees were all budding. And the first of the blossoms are already there on my neighbour’s tree. If you happen to be visiting Induja in the next few weeks, you will see this spectacle of nature. Do share some pictures with us on the social media.
Walk the dogs on the street and you will certainly come home with a few petals of blessing on your head.
The Spring of life never returns. But the memories last forever.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
Induja was our family home until 2017, and for work reasons, we have moved out. We lived here for several years and we cherish the memories.
Induja has since been a holiday home for many peoples’ short and long stays. Many of our guests have returned. While it remains a holiday home that’s ideal for families with pets and children, celebrations and occasions, our guests have shaped the present Induja - we listen to your feedback and suggestions in order to improve and adapt.
We also seek to accommodate guests’ preferences, where feasible. Stays at Induja can be used a variety of purposes including but not limited to:
A base for Peak District walks, photography, biking, exploration etc.
Anniversaries, birthdays and other such celebrations
Religious and / or irreligious celebrations and ceremonies
Organised cooking and art sessions
Study breaks
Experiencing village life right next to the Peak District whilst also enjoying close proximity to Sheffield, a lively and thriving city
A base for exploring Sheffield, the Real Ale Capital of the World
Understand the History of Sheffield and its surrounding areas:
For example, in Dore, the suburb of Sheffield where Induja is based, it can be reasonably argued that King Egbert became the first King of England there.
Similarly, explore Sheffield’s history more broadly and present attractions such as the parks, gardens, museums, art galleries, architecture etc.
Visit Peak District settlements such as Bakewell which is well known for the Bakewell Pudding (a delicious pudding that was famously made by accident) and the Bakewell Tart.
Visit Chatsworth House and its grounds.
See Loxley (Robin Hood’s birthplace).
And much more.
As always, we welcome your suggestions- this could be organized peak district photographic sessions, walks, bikers weeks, girls days out, vegetarian cooking sessions, any number of ideas are welcome. Obviously, we will aim to accommodate these in the lean periods and weekdays
