The Weir portage is one of the awkward points on the river but was made more so when it was completely closed off due to a Sink hole that a appeared earlier this year by the Weir
Well it’s finally been filled allowing for portage of the weir once again
👍 The towpath at the weir in Shrewsbury is now OPEN after Severn Trent completed repair work at the site.
👷 Back in March a council vehicle fell into a sinkhole at the site, leading to the path being closed while the vehicle was removed and subsequent repairs carried out.
🏆well done you made it, it’s the weekend so relax and unwind and allow yourself to dream of adventures yet to come 🛶

The River Prize is awarded each year at the River Restoration Conference. It celebrates the achievements of organisations working to improve the natural functioning and ecological integrity of UK rivers and catchments.
The award is judged by a panel of experts, and we are so pleased and proud to be selected as one of the finalists this year. The awards evening takes place later this month and we can't wait to hear more about each of the projects up for the award.

This time of year we are blessed with the sight of these beautiful fish 🐟 jumping the weir in Shrewsbury. We’ve been down the last couple of days to watch their efforts just before dusk. Crowds of Salopians have been gathering to catch a glimpse of leaping salmon as they migrate from the icy Atlantic.
We always give advice on what to bring to make your trip enjoyable and when it comes to water its normally the big weight consideration/ trade off people try to make,
I have seen people head out on a hot day with nothing more that a half litre of water even refusing an extra bottle I would offer, when I see them at the other side they look completely haggard
I happen to see this from a picture from the Global Bushcraft Symposium this weekend
And it reinforces the importance of water on performance but the little & often method gives quite a boost to your ability to do sustained activity
FYI the pace/speed example given is the same as you travel at along the river

These guys have been using our Shropshire special trip as part of a bigger Severn Way journey they have been doing by walking biking and now canoeing, they are returning later in the year to continue their route

A great group of 4 guys with no real plan outside of seeing how far they get over the next 5 days going with the flow and camping along the way
So when and where possible I like to try and help out at Shrewsbury weir, it just speeds things up for you
The group takes there few lose things I keep the barrels in the back of the boat and use a longer painter on the front to do what’s called “lining”
With a bit of skill and experience I have control of the boat but do need to be careful not to tip everything out at the bottom of the weir
Plus careful not to run off the bottom!
Realy I should get someone else to record rather than trying to do all myself this time I got away with it 🙂 just !

You've come so far on this canoe already, keep on going... Adventure Day 6: From Worcester river and your journey slows its pace, due to the frequent weirs and locks along this stretch. Your first town of note is Upton-on-Severn, with its many festivals. You’ll paddle down to Tewkesbury Cotswolds medieval market town, where you can stay or camp. Adventure Day 5: Another scenic stretch of river with the Wyre Forest Valley beside you. Then you’ll travel through the attractive Georgian town of Bewdley and on to Stourport-On-Severn, with its lively boating community so a great place to stock up, close to the water. Its giant lock gates represent where the river is becoming more ‘engineered’, connecting it to the canal network and changing the character of the landscape again to more open arable farmland. Another day... Another wonderful part of the adventure... Adventure Day 4: More beauty awaits you as you travel onto Hampton Loade, via the fascinating picturesque town of Bridgnorth. Don’t miss the hermit caves in the sandstone cliffs above Bridgnorth, then the town itself with its High Town and Low Town along the riverside, with a Victorian funicular railway linking the two.
