Enjoying my 'job'. Walk Test Day on Dartmoor, and you really could see for miles and miles and miles. Lots of controlled burning going on (swailing). It looked liked the Russians or Americans had invaded.

Upcoming Walk - Wistmans Wood - Dartmoor

The walk on Sunday 9th March is to Wistmans Wood on Dartmoor, a beautiful 8 mile open moorland walk. The pictures are what you can expect. I took these on my last trip.

If you would like to join us, please book up now to avoid missing out.

The current weather forecast is dry, with the slight possibilty of a shower near the end of the walk. There is one steady uphill and one steady downhill.

If you are new to Coast and Country Walking, you can join the walking club very easily. It is currently free to join and all that is required is for you to complete the online personal information form (see the link below). Once received you are able to book on any of the walk online.

Look forward to seeing you on a walk soon,

Andy

Better late than never. Due to an episode of 'man flu' everything has been a bit slower for me than normal.

On Saturday our latest adventure took us to Tarr Steps and the village of Winsford - twin town with Kathmandu.

What a delight this walk was. Only two uphills, a tiny bit of mud and clear skies all day. Ok ok ok, two mountains, enough mud for 9 million elephants to bath in, and the odd shower. But did that dampen the spirits? no chance. This is a Coast & Country Walk, where laughter cures everything.

The day started with a detention for one of the crew. The crime, lateness and inability to read a map. Steve Vincent, head masters office... RIGHT NOW. John was smiling all day, as he is no longer the only person to get lost on a walk.

Then it was awards galore. Anne won the world record for the longest skid mark. Jan tried to beat the record but sadly fell at the final furlong, and Ginny won the dirty dog award, by a country mile.

This was definitely one of my fav walks, which finished at the Tarr Steps Inn.

Thank you everyone for a great day.

We have our final February walk on Thursday at Axminster, the weather is going to be great.

Then the March walks begin on Sunday, with an iconic walk on the Devon Dorset border. If you haven't booked up yet, you need to get a shifty on, some walks are half full already.

Really looking forward to seeing you on the next walk,

Andy

Celebrations, Blood and Donkeys

Yesterday the gang took on a 6 mile circular half term walk from the Donkey Sanctuary to Weston, then along the coast path to Salcombe Regis, onwards to Harcombe and back to the Donkey Sanctuary.

This was a tough one due to mud & a couple of minor hills/mountains (delete as applicable 🤣)

The walk was not without its usual incidents. The ‘I get knocked out, but I get back up again award’ was issued to several as they hit the deck on the slippery muddy paths.

We had a celebration too, a couple that have been with us since the start celebrated their 42 nd Wedding Anniversary, congrats to Stu and Anne.

The excitement did get a bit much for the blushing bride. Who ended up suffering a significant nose bleed in all the excitement. Thankfully Our resident nurse Ginny was on hand to help clear up the mess 🤢

We also welcomed lots of new members Pete, Helen and Tina. Plus we welcomed back Brad. Thank you to Sue and Karen for recommending the group. Pete is already signed up for the next one.

Interesting facts of the day centred around the creation of the Donkey Sanctuary which all began at the Salston Manor Hotel, with the purchase of Happy Face. 14,500 donkeys later and it is what you see today.
The gang also learnt that several famous people live or lived in Salcombe Regis, Debbie Harry 🤣, Mary King (event rider) and Norman Lockyer , although he does reside in the graveyard. Did you know he discovered Helium?

We finished off the day with tea and medals at the Donkey Sanctuary Cafe (during half term)

The next walk is on Saturday at Tarr Steps. This one is going to be one of the most picturesque and scenic, with a good weather forecast at the moment.

See you all soon,

Andy

To avoid that missing out feeling.

Sign up for this Sunday's Wimbleball Lake Walk. It really is a stunner. Most of the walk is flat with one hill at the finish.

On my recce walk, I saw Kingfisher, Heron, Canadian Geese and much much more wildlife. The lake itself is stunning. At this time of year there isn't as many tourists clogging up the paths. So a great time to visit.

Avoid that feeling on Sunday night of wishing you'd signed up, by coming on the walk.

Look forward to seeing you there,

Andy

The impact these walks have on people are greater than I ever imagined.

Today we walked down to Starcross and around the Powderham Estate.

A short simple walk with very few hills, some great views, and the most excellent company. Were all the ingredients you need to take stock and appreciate what you actually have.

Did you know that Powderham comes from the Dutch word - Polder – meaning “Hamlet of the reclaimed Marsh Land”. The Castle is the home of the Earl of Devon who puts on some incredible shows. Over the years some of the greatest musicians have performed there, including Tom Jones, Brian Adams and Coldplay.

The estate is also home to some 600 fallow deer which we were very lucky to see up close.

We welcomed two new members, Judith and Alex, who were given a very warm welcome by the members of the C & C family.

We finished our walk at the farmshop cafe, where we received an exceptional service from the staff there. A table reserved, the quickest and friendliest service. 5 stars from everyone in the group. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

The next walk is on Thursday were we head over to the Wellington Monument. There are still plenty of spaces if you wish to join us.

Look forward to seeing you all soon,

Andy

Today’s walk is dedicated to the memory of Paul. A year ago today.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather. Bright sunshine all day. Perfect.

Today’s adventure had so much and more. We started off in the chocolate box village of Broadhembury. The former home of the Drewe family. One of their descendants built Castle Drogo. This village was once the home of TV personality Kirsty Allsop.

The walk took us onwards to Blackborough where we had a visit to the tractor museum. With excitement nearly bubbling over in the group we climbed up to the Glider Club for a prearranged air display by the Red Baron and Devon and Somersets finest pilots.

Reading this and didn’t join us. I can feel the envy building. There’s always next time.

As if that wasn’t enough, Barry the Buzzard and Doris the Deer made an appearance making this a very special walk.

I haven’t even mentioned the views yet.

My thanks to everyone for coming along today, what a great bunch you were. We welcomed Anna, Vicki and Andy to Coast and Country Family. Look forward to seeing you all again soon.

We finally retired to the Drewe Arms who did us proud with seating by the fire.

This will definitely be one of the more memorable ones for me. Jacqui a fitting way to remember your Dad.

See you all on the next one Sunday,

Andy
