Rebecca Waterfield Equine Sports Massage Therapy

Having owned, ridden and competed from a young age and worked professionally with everything from much-loved family ponies to international competition horses, I understand the importance of having a healthy, happy horse who is able to perform at their very best, whatever their discipline. I have worked with many horses recovering from injury or wit

h life long conditions which has not only given me valuable experience but also fuelled my interest in equine rehabilitation and the benefits of complementary therapies. To further my knowledge and fulfil a passion to make a positive difference to the horses I work with, I completed a diploma in Equine Sports Massage at The College of Animal Therapies, qualifying in 2016. Equine Sports Massage uses professional sports massage techniques, manipulating soft tissue to loosen muscles and identify areas of stress or weakness in the musculoskeletal system. This hands-on, holistic approach provides many benefits to the whole body, meaning any horse can benefit from ESM treatment, from happy hacker or top athlete. ESM Benefits include:

~Improved range of movement, coordination and balance
~Improved circulation and lymph flow
~Improved stamina
~Improved mental well-being
~Releases muscular tension
~Reduced chance of injury
~Aids recovery from illness or injury

Massage can be incorporated into a rehabilitation program, including those on box rest; used before and after competition and as a general maintenance to help keep you horse supple and relaxed. PLEASE NOTE:
Equine Sports Massage is not a substitute for veterinary attention. All work carried out is in accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, which states that veterinary consent must be approved before working on any animal. Veterinary consent forms are available from me and can be emailed to you. Initial Consultation:
Approx 1.5-2 hrs to include:

~Discussing the horses' history and any current problems or concerns
~Gait and conformation analysis
~Observe the horse lunged or ridden if necessary
~A full massage treatment with additional appropriate therapies eg. MFR

A copy of the assessment can be made available for your own records. I may also leave you with appropriate stretches and exercises to practice between treatment sessions. Follow up Treatments:
Approx 1-1.5 hrs

Full body massage and appropriate therapies specifically tailored to the individual horse, focusing on any problem areas. IAAT Registered. Fully Qualified & Insured. If you have any questions or to book an appointment please contact Rebecca. Tel: 07725 465479

My diary may be on holiday but there are still a few things to tick off the job sheet!

On Monday, I was kindly invited to Eridge Pony Club do give a demo as part of their 4-day rallies.

What a super bunch of pony mad kids they are!!

Despite the heat and jam-packed schedule, they were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and not afraid to get stuck in.
A shining example of the next generation of budding equestrians who are sure to go and do great things 🌟

And that my friends,is a wrap! 🍹💤😎

Apart from a few follow ups I am now off on hols.
You can still drop me a message to book for September onwards but my diary is now closed to new appointments until then.
I am sure I will see a fair few of you at events but I wish you all a super summer with your ponies!

The sun did finally come out and stay out today!

Some appointments available for the end of June.
FYI: July is my last month to get as many of you booked in before I take some time off in August as juggling childcare during summer holidays becomes really tricky for me!
I will run some limited availability during that time but if you are keen to get your appointment in before September, now is your moment so do drop me a message!

Have a great week everybody!

Lastly, after a really tough week for so many of us,we can take comfort in the knowledge that we are part of an AMAZING equestrian community and we stand together through the best and the very worst 💜🤍 xx

True or False:
Massage is only for competition horses?

FALSE!

Meet Harvey who is 28 years old today!!
Yes,he did do lots of exciting things in his younger years but now he is very happy to hack out once a week and spend his days grazing with his pals.

Keeping your veteran supple and mobile with routine massage treatments could make all the difference. The boost in circulation can help alleviate arthritic discomfort and improve lymphatic drainage, reducing swelling and allowing better joint mobility.

So, regardless of whether you have a spritely 8 year old or a 28yr old enjoying his twilight years like Harvey, there will be a place for massage for your horse or pony.

Drop me a message if you would like to know more or to book an appointment.

Enjoy the sunshine!

After yesterday’s washout, how good was it to feel warm ☀️☀️☀️ today!
(I’m slightly taking the blame for the washout as I swapped out my winter clothes for summer ones on Sunday 🤦🏻‍♀️)

FYI-Due to a previous commitment coming to an end,I now have extra availability on Thursdays for sports massage plus some capacity for local ad hoc yard work/holiday cover/pet sitting.

Drop me a message for more info.

This is really helpful advice with a great visual from Josie. A change in behaviour usually signifies a change elsewhere. Gut health often has links with seasonal changes so consider how this may be effecting your horse as we go in to spring.

Well that was a tad chilly today!🥶👐🏻

Here’s a few tips for keeping yourself, your horse and your therapist warm and happy!

🐴 LAYER UP-inc.Hats,neck warmers,gloves,insulated boots.
Standing around with your horse for at least an hour means you will get cold quickly.

🐴 HOT DRINKS-I will rarely say no to a cuppa! Plus,it’s a good way to keep the cold at bay,an excuse to warm my hands up and also allows the horse a little break time to process and me to observe any changes. (Splash of milk,no sugar. Ta!)

🐴 RUGS-if your horse is rugged I will continue to work around this, moving a rug to work on an area and then re-covering when I move on to the next. It’s important to keep muscles warm during and after a treatment so even if your horse is usually unrugged, popping one on after a session is of benefit, especially in cold weather.

🐴FEEDING- Hungry horses are not easy to treat, especially if they associate coming in with food and then find it’s me there to greet them and not dinner! So making sure your horse has had access to hay or feed BEFORE I come can help.
I’m generally not an advocate for haynets but there are times when they have their uses and if you feel your horse needs one during a session that’s ok,but I will likely remove it at times to treat certain areas etc.

🐴 CLEAN & DRY PLEASE- wet, dirty horses are a big NO-NO! It makes it very difficult to assess what I’m feeling, can make it uncomfortable for the horse and is a killer on my hands!

LASTLY…

🐴 Roll on Spring!!!

Have a good week! x

Anyone else feel they need a big hug after sloshing about with Henk for days??
It really is disgusting out there!😩

January is a tough month and this weather makes it a very long, hard slog with horses. It really makes us question our sanity!

If you have a horse who is having to be stabled more than normal or is having to trudge around in deep mud all day, both can take a toll on their bodies. Massage can really help relieve muscle soreness, fatigue and joint stiffness and general January blues!

I do have some availability left this month so do drop me a message if you would like an appointment.

Stay dry(ish!) x
