As the year draws to a close at Beach Pads we like to connect with nature. The final sunrise of the year offers a profound opportunity for spiritual renewal and reflection. This sacred moment is more than just the day's beginning. Sunrise symbolises new beginnings and the promise of what lies ahead. Embracing this time allows us to recalibrate our minds and spirits. It fosters a deeper connection with the world around us.

One of the simplest yet most powerful feelings is to greet the sunrise with gratitude. As the sun peeks over the horizon, take a moment to express appreciation for the lessons learned over the past year. Reflect on both the challenges and accomplishments that have shaped you. This practice can set a positive tone for the coming year, encouraging a mindset of openness and growth.

Meditation is another potent way to connect with nature. Find a quiet spot on the beach, close your eyes, and focus on the sound around you, enjoying the waves and birds.

Good advice!

Know the water you’re paddling! Plan your day of paddling and file a “float plan” so that someone knows where to find you and when you plan to return.

Worth knowing how to spot a RIP current…

⚠️ How to spot a rip current ⚠️

When waves break; narrow, fast-moving belts of water traveling offshore (red arrow) can form.

These currents are particularly dangerous for weak or non-swimmers and can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea. 🌊🏊

Good advice for cold water swimming!

Good advice for cold water swimming!

Boxing Day swims are very popular in the UK, as keen beachgoers wear their Christmas accessories and head for a festive dip.

If you're planning to head to the water today, be wary of cold water shock which can leave you helpless in seconds, gasping uncontrollably and inhaling water.

Make sure to acclimatise by entering the water slowly, getting used to the temperature and getting your breathing under control.

If you do experience cold water shock, the initial effects pass in less than a minute so do not try to swim straight away. Relax and follow the Float to Live advice from the RNLI.

Take warm clothes and a hot drink for after your swim to help you warm up.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

What to do if you see a seal on the beach :

Please never put or encourage a seal back in the sea. If you are concerned for its welfare please call BDMLR 01825 765546. THANK YOU x

*What to if you find a seal pup…*

Earlier this week our team were called to check on a seal at Pendeen. Unfortunately when our volunteer Medics arrived all that was left was this trail followed by some footprints, suggesting the pup was shepherded into the sea on purpose.

Seals haul out on land to sleep and conserve energy amongst other things, returning to the water when they decide they are ready to do so.

If you find a seal pup that you’re concerned about then please follow the following advice:
- Keep yourself and others well back and quiet so as not to disturb the seal and scare it off
- Get your dog under control on a lead
- Call us for advice or assistance on 01825 765546

You can read more detailed advice here: https://bdmlr.org.uk/what-to-do-if

Thank you for sharing this deal rescue story.
