The Beach House with its amazing panoramic views was where the Artist John Miller painted his iconic beach scenes. Ferryman's Rest was John Miller's home overlooking the water. On sunny days, John Miller would often paint outside on Ferryman's Rest Patio.

You may be familiar with his inspiring artwork which so beautifully captures the view from the houses.

The location was a perfect choice when Chris Rea used one of John Miller's paintings of the location for the Front Cover of "The King of The Beach" Album.

“Why is the ship’s bridge dark at night?”

Description: The bridge of a ship is kept dark at night to ensure maximum visibility for navigation. Bright lights inside the bridge can cause reflections on the windows, making it harder for the crew to see external objects like other vessels, buoys, or hazards. This practice, called “dark adaptation,” allows the crew’s eyes to adjust to the low light, improving their ability to spot obstacles or distant lights. Additionally, dim lighting minimizes distractions and helps maintain situational awareness during night operations.

Key Points:
1. Avoiding Glare: Bright lights can reflect off windows, obstructing the crew’s view.
2. Night Vision: A dark environment helps the crew’s eyes adjust to natural light outside.
3. Safety: Clear visibility at night is crucial for identifying nearby vessels, hazards, or navigation aids.
4. Regulations: International maritime practices often require reduced lighting on the bridge during night hours.
5. Focus: A dark bridge minimizes distractions, ensuring the crew stays focused on navigation and radar readings.

Did you know that Beach Pads is based on the most south westerly RSPB Reserve in the UK? The location is home to a wide variety of wetland birds and a delight to explore. You will discover large expanses of sand, tidal pools and marsh dotted around. It is possible for you to follow the South West Coast Path around the reserve, so you can pause to watch waders come in to roost. It is a very special location for bird watching. Stay with us and become a bird watching twitcher.

The RSPB advise that the best time for bird watching is in winter. It is one of the best times to spot the migrating visitors such as vast flocks of Teals and Wigeons and maybe a vagrant Ring-billed Gull from North America.

Great photo 🤩The Cornish Riviera 🚊 starts off from London Paddington at night and arrives in Penzance the following morning. Sleep 💤 through the journey and wake up in the beautiful Cornish Wild West. Many of our guests travel to us this way and highly recommend it.

Locally we have the scenic St Ives Bay line ( one of most picturesque in U.K.) plus great bus links that connect us to all the best places to visit. 😍

Man over board. 🏊 🚤
Another top tip from NCI St Ives

If someone falls overboard, quick and decisive action is crucial to ensure their safety. Here’s what you should do:

Immediate Actions

1. Shout “Man Overboard!”
• Loudly alert everyone on the vessel so the crew and passengers know someone is in the water.
• Specify which side (e.g., “Man overboard, port side!”).

2. Throw a Floatation Device
• Toss a life ring, lifejacket, or anything that floats to the person. This helps them stay afloat and marks their location.

3. Keep Eyes on the Person
• Designate one person to constantly point and keep visual contact with the person in the water.

4. Stop or Slow the Vessel
• If you’re operating the boat, slow down or stop, but avoid reversing immediately to prevent the propeller from injuring the person.

5. Turn the Boat Safely
• Use a controlled turn (such as a Williamson turn) to maneuver the vessel back to the person. Ensure you’re approaching them on the windward side (upwind) to avoid drifting over them.

Recovery

6. Approach Carefully
• Slow down as you near the person to avoid causing waves or risking a collision.

7. Help Them Aboard
• Use a ladder, life sling, or another retrieval method to bring the person back on board. If they’re unconscious or injured, you may need to use additional lifting equipment.

8. Administer First Aid
• Check for hypothermia, injuries, or water ingestion and provide immediate medical assistance.

Preventive Tips

• Ensure everyone wears lifejackets, especially in rough waters.
• Conduct safety drills regularly so everyone knows what to do.
• Equip your boat with safety gear like throwable flotation devices and rescue equipment.
