With the capability at JWA to supply parts to a wide variety of markets, we are always endeavouring to find new customers and opportunities. This often takes the form of attending ‘networking’ events, a good way of keeping our name at the forefront of potential clients minds, so that even if they don’t have an immediate need for our specialist skills, we will be the first call as and when they do!
Last week saw us attend two such events, both organised through our membership of the Motorsport industry Association, and therefore on this occasion concentrating on our traditional core markets of motorsport and niche automotive. The first was held at MOOG in Tewksbury, a market leading company in motion control sensors and systems. A tour of their factory was included alongside an open Industry forum, which is always useful to discuss a lot of the common challenges faced by similar companies and generally keep an ear to the ground and up to date with any industry developments. As with all these type of events, it is difficult to gauge which contacts may develop into potential business leads, and it is certainly the case that often the most innocuous conversations can lead to excellent opportunities! With a similar history in motorsport supply to JWA, MOOG’s state of the art facility contained numerous reminders of this, not least the 1999 Stewart-Ford F1 car pictured, driven that season by Johnny Herbert and Rubens Barrichello, with Herbert winning the European Grand Prix.
A freezing cold and wet Donington, venue for the latest round of the BTCC, provided slightly less comfortable conditions for the second networking event of the week, however the hospitality of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Team, more than made up for it. JWA are already fortunate enough to count current BTCC teams as customers, but welcomed the opportunity to expand that. Despite the weather, the relaxed atmosphere and unhindered access to all of the pit area and teams garages as they prepared for the weekends races, was a great opportunity to meet with the relevant team members and impress on them the unrivalled quality of JWA’s supply capabilities! Some very useful contacts were made and reinforced, which hopefully will also develop into new business.
All in all a busy but enjoyable week and with the NEC trade shows on the horizon, there is certainly no peace for the wicked! 😜

There are certainly Historic race meetings, such as The Silverstone Classic, that attract more visitors, but as far as ‘static’ events go, the Mecca for Historic motorsport enthusiasts is undoubtedly Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. To refer to it as static is probably a touch unfair, as there is an impressive array of Group B rally cars that blast round a short layout on the Saturday and Sunday, however the main focus is the opportunity to meet face to face with the great and the good of the fastest growing form of motorsport, certainly in Europe, and exactly the reason representatives from JWA HQ set out for rural Warwickshire last Friday. The show is one of many that has endured a two year enforced postponement, and its return, while very welcome, was certainly on a more condensed scale. That said, and similarly to Autosport, its January held, modern racing counterpart, this could be seen as a positive, due to the fact that the reduction in size had been at the expense of some of the less relevant stands.
Luckily what was the same was the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that always pervades the show and as Historic motorsport undoubtedly has a 'lifestyle' appeal to its gatherings, the usual eclectic mix of owners clubs, food stalls, artwork, clothing stands and auto spares jumble were all happily familiar. Taking the opportunity to visit the MIA (Motorsport Industry Association) HQ, situated on the same Stoneleigh site, to meet fellow members and colleagues added to a very productive day which will hopefully lead to ongoing business opportunities and reinforce existing relationships. The only slight downside came when choosing, the admittedly very tasty lunch option of pork gyros and Greek salad, from an outlet that seemed to have set its pricing in line with the fact it was near the entrance to Silverstone Auctions, where the average depth of pocket saw a 35 year old performance, Ford Sierra, sell for an eye watering £582,000! 👀
Photos below are a Lotus 76 F1 car (Main Pic) from 1974, then left to right, a March 782, Corvette Stingray and a Ford RS 200 from the fantastic array of Group B Rally exhibition. If you've never attended, put it in your diary for 2024, some food pricing aside, it's a great event. 😄

Well you know it's January, when you find yourself at the NEC for the Autosport International Show. This traditional opener to the motorsport calendar has been absent for the last couple of years, due to the obvious restraints of lockdown, and in the opinion of many regular visitors had seen a steadily diminishing attendance by some of the industries big hitters previous to this.
There was therefore a definite element of uncertainty in the JWA delegation that braved the miserable elements to attend the first of the 'trade' days on Thursday this week, not really knowing what to expect from an event that had once been a very glitzy affair indeed.
What greeted them was certainly a downsized version of its previous incarnation, no sleek Porsche stand dominating the main entrance, with all the 'beautiful people' flocking to it, and equally noticeable, a distinct lack of spearmint rhino employees moonlighting for a few days in expertly tailored cat suits on any manufacturers stand worth its salt!
That said, what it did have was probably more important, a good core of current and potential customers, situated in a footprint that didn't require a sat nav to get around, ensuring we achieved a good deal of the actual purpose of our attendance, meeting and greeting like minded individuals who already do, and potentially could, allow JWA to enjoy further growth in one of the most fascinating and successful UK industries. Sure there was even more driving simulators, multiple vehicles that had been gaudily modified to the point where you can't actually tell what it started out as! and the usual assortment of eye wateringly priced 'refreshments' where every care is taken to ensure that you don' at any point have an interaction with another human being! But this is just standard at all modern trade shows and from the amount of people flocking around the elements that aren't really 'our cup of tea', it's obviously theirs, and good luck to them. Maybe a scaled down show was what was needed at this exact moment in time, as businesses kept a close eye on their marketing budgets and reigned in the 'look at us' gimmicks, concentrating more on good old fashioned networking to ensure survival and growth? We certainly took enough away to reinforce our belief that 2023 could be a very exciting year for JWA, but for next years show, maybe one or two more cat suits wouldn't hurt anyone! 😉

It's always nice to receive positive feedback from customers, and this week at JWA HQ, we were lucky enough to receive just that from the latest recipients of our bespoke, pneumatic car lifts.
A race team who compete a number of different cars in various championships, they contacted us at the beginning of last week with a requirement for a set of lifts, ideally in time for initial use with their single seater, at a test that weekend!
Needless to say, challenge accepted, and before 9.30 a.m. last Thursday morning a set duly arrived at their workshop in Essex. Hand delivered by a JWA employee to ensure safe transit, and immediately put to work, the lifts have proved an instant success.
Many thanks to Paul, the happy customer, for his kind feedback regarding the speed of delivery, the quality of the lifts and the picture below of them in action, we hope his team find them as invaluable as we do our own set. 👍

An opportunity to restore a legend..
There was a growing sense of anticipation at JWA HQ this week, as we received the green light to initiate the re-build of an irrefutable classic. The E-Type Jaguar, is in many peoples eyes, the most iconic British sports car ever produced, instantly recognisable to even the most casual of observers, and therefore being entrusted with restoring one to its previous glory, is testament to the capabilities we are proud to retain at JWA. The fact that this particular 'Big Cat' is one of the sought after Series 1, drop head, flat floor examples, only amplifies the pride and expectation in hearing its signature purr again.
Over the next few months we will be bringing you regular updates of its progress, but for now there's some serious homework to be done!

Seeing the first job for a new customer, completed to specification and departing the workshop in the required timescale, is always very rewarding. In this case the latest such batch from JWA HQ is 40 sets of bespoke door hinges for a new motorsport client, and hopefully just the first of many projects we can assist with.

Many congratulations from everyone at JWA HQ, to our customers EXCELR8 Motorsport, their winning driver, Tom Ingram, and our friend and Chief Race Engineer, Spencer Aldridge, on their first BTCC championship victory, a fantastic team effort! A notoriously difficult title to win, in arguably the most competitive series in UK Motorsport, we are proud to have been trusted with providing engineering support throughout the season. Here's to a repeat next year! 😄🏆 (All photos courtesy of EXCELR8 Motorsport)

We may be a little biased, but thought we would share this fantastic example of metallic artistry, and the latest part produced by the very talented team at JWA HQ. As with so many of the bespoke and reverse engineered parts our customers entrust to us, they are brought to life through the combined skills of our design and machining personnel. The pictured part, a wheel from a late 2000's LMP1 (A category of the historic Le Mans 24 hour race) sports prototype, is no exception. Machined from a solid billet of aluminium on our DMG Mori 5 axis machining center, the various stages of production are carried out by its muti-tool capability, once the programme has been converted from a drawing to the appropriate software. The final product therefore relies on the cooperation and input of numerous members of staff, and I'm sure you'll agree, it is a very effective combination!

As most agile companies do, we are always keen to expand our customer base and spread the gospel according to JWA!
Obviously one of the best opportunities to do this is at major motorsport events and last week saw two just such gatherings take place. Unfortunately both were scheduled in the motorsport diary for the same Friday, but ever the resourceful types, the JWA representative squad decided to divide and conquer, splitting their forces in half to attend both.
One group was dispatched to the home of British motorsport for the Silverstone Classic, somewhat of a mecca for a large number of our traditional clientele and arguably the biggest event in the UK Historic Motorsport scene. With nearly all grids containing cars relying on a part manufactured at JWA HQ, it is the ideal surrounding to catch up with long standing customers while hopefully meeting some new in the relaxed atmosphere of the ‘open’ pits.
In contrast our involvement in The British Touring Car Championship is relatively new, however proving our quality and responsive engineering support to a major team and tier one supplier, has enabled us to establish a burgeoning reputation relatively quickly. A Motorsport Industry Association event at the Thruxton round of the Championship was therefore not to be missed, and as such the second JWA operative was up bright and early for the three hour journey to a very sunny Hampshire. The MIA delegation were guests of BTC Racing in their fantastic hospitality trailer (Main picture) and after coffee and a few amusing anecdotes from one of their current drivers and ex BTCC Champion, Jason Plato, a very productive tour of their garage and the general pit area followed. Managing to speak to one of our existing clients and a number of other teams made for a very effective day of networking, which even the two hour tailback on the M5 leg of the journey home didn’t manage to ruin! Hopefully both visits will bear fruit in the coming months. 😉

Another incarnation of our pneumatic lifts left the JWA workshop this week. On this occasion the adaption was required to accommodate the oversized front aero on a clients car, while still allowing it to be raised safely to working height. In true JWA style, with the customer under pressure to source a solution, from the initial enquiry on Monday morning, the lift was designed, manufactured and tested, in time for a very impressed client to collect on Friday morning, a pretty quick turnaround even by our standards! 😉

Two fantastic celebrations of Historic Racing, taking place within two weeks of each other, can only mean one thing..................the production schedule at JWA HQ has gone into overdrive!
Both the AvB Oldtimer at the Nurburgring next weekend, and the Silverstone Classic at the end of August, are always popular, well supported events. Enticing large crowds with a potent cocktail of nostalgic racing and live music, they are part Grand Prix, part Glastonbury, with the grids containing something for everyone, from pre-war and the era of Stirling Moss, through Group C and Classic F1, to 90's Touring cars and everything in between!
With JWA's long standing reputation of success both competing in and supplying Historic motorsport, and a large proportion of our racing clientele entering or preparing cars for both events, our talented team are flat out ensuring a host of beautiful classics make it to the starting grid. As always, it is very rewarding to be involved in ensuring current generations get to see these machines as they should be, not just on static display, but dicing with each other around two of Europe's most iconic circuits, long may it continue. 😁

Well the old saying that 'a picture tells a thousand words' is certainly true for some of the latest parts dispatched to customers from JWA HQ. Regular followers will be aware of the pride we take in the broad diversity of solutions we can offer customers, whether that be method, material or complexity, our can do approach usually finds a way!
From large, fabricated assemblies down to small, intricate components such as those in the image below, our talented team are capable of ensuring clients projects are completed to a consistently high standard, whichever end of the scale they require. 😀👍

With some of the team already reverting to earlier shifts to combat the heat, and the mercury set to rise even higher next week, the JWA team might be forgiven for a slight dip in productivity. However, to their credit, deadlines are still being hit and a steady stream of top quality, performance enhancing work, continues to be produced at JWA HQ. The most recent parts, a time critical job for a high level motorsport customer, the latest to be dispatched and a great example of the complex components our talented team produce as standard. Did somebody say last one to the Kings pays for the cold ones! 😜🍺🍺

Next Tuesday sees members of the JWA crew heading out to another event making a welcome return post Covid restrictions, the very popular, Le Mans Classic. Open to cars (or similar cars of the same model) that competed at the Le Mans 24 hours between 1923 and 1979, the format essentially sees competitors divided into six different categories relating to the era in which they raced, with additional support races for other historic classics. Each category competes over a series of 40 minute races, staggered in time from Saturday afternoon through the night to the finish on Sunday, to ensure that all drivers experience as many of the challenges of the authentic 24 hour race as possible.
First held in 2002 and then every two years, Covid excepted, the four days of competition are a fantastic spectacle of historic racing and the only other event that enjoys the use of the full 13.65 km circuit, public roads included, other than the actual Le Mans 24 hour.
Our involvement this year will be running a clients ‘74’ Porsche RSR in the Porsche Classic support race, while also transporting a Lister 'Nobbly' Chevrolet, on behalf of a customer competing in the 57-61 category. Lets hope the weather is as good as sunny Eccleshall! 😎

Is it a bird?, Is it a plane? No it’s JWA flying to the rescue once again!
When a new customer recently contacted us, enquiring about our portable, pneumatic car lifts, we were obviously only to pleased to help. When they revealed the time frame they required them in was just two weeks we knew it would be tight, but never able to resist a challenge, promised to do our best to hit the deadline. It transpired that they had originally tried to source a standard set of similar lifts from another supplier, (I know, beware of imitations!) but after continual delays and increases to the agreed price, had decided to seek an alternative. That alternative was JWA, and they certainly came to the right place! After gaining more information from the client as to the exact requirement for the prospective lifts, we were able to provide them with a bespoke set, modified from our 900kg range. This meant that the final product we supplied, not only had a higher lifting capacity than their original set, but also adaptions tailor made for their exact function. All this within the compressed, two week deadline AND within the original cost bracket. Not all superheroes wear capes. 😉

Last week saw the JWA team at one of its favourite events, the historic race meeting at Pau in Southern France. Aside from the usual perks of a late spring/early summer visit to one of the nicest parts of Western Europe, where the weather makes regular ‘refreshment’ a must, Pau’s popularity is also due to the fact that the racing takes place on the streets of the old walled town and attracts a crowd that gives it almost a carnival atmosphere.
Of course the trip is not ‘all beer and skittles’, with the paperwork currently necessary to take a racing car abroad a mission in itself, so with two racing cars on the transporter as it left Eccleshall and one to pick up on the way, the logistics were far from straight forward. However once the tribulations of customs had been overcome, the arrival at the picturesque venue more than justified the effort and the team quickly got down to the practicalities of Friday’s qualifying. Three markedly different cars were operating from the JWA pit area, a long standing customers 74 Porsche RSR, a more recent clients 1963 Lotus Elite, and a first time clients 1970 Merlyn single seater. We had transported all three and were running the Porsche and Lotus, while the Merlyn had its own support team, but needless to say being Pau, where space is in relatively short supply, it was certainly a hive of activity!
Despite a couple of small setbacks, a battery issue with the Porsche and alternator on the Lotus, both cars qualified well, competing in different classes in the same race. The race days, Saturday, and to a lesser extent Sunday, proved the weathermen correct for once and in very hot, energy sapping conditions, both drivers enjoyed second in class finishes on each occasion. A special mention must be made for our social and pit area compatriots running the Merlyn and their young, promising driver, Rory Smith, who after a blistering qualifying effort on Friday achieved a second in his Saturday race and went one better on Sunday with an outstanding win.
As regular followers of this page will have probably already guessed, these group successes led to some class winning socialising over the weekend, as new racing friendships were forged and we look forward to hopefully enjoying similar events together in the near future.
The journey home was perhaps even more eventful than the racing, with broken down road cars, missed flights, stolen curries and illegal stowaways, but that’s a story for another day! 😉

(Pictures are of the 74 RSR and another customers pole setting, March 762, which we have supplied numerous parts for)

One of the key mantras in a machinists bible, 'knowing your speeds and feeds' is important when working with any material, however it is absolutely imperative when that material is one of the 'exotic' metals.
These latest parts produced at JWA, for a customer competing in the Monaco Historic Grand Prix this weekend, are Titanium, a material utilised for its dual benefits of outstanding strength and light weight. The counter balance to these sought after advantages, are its relatively high cost and challenging proposition to machine accurately and effectively. Luckily the talented team at JWA certainly know their 'S & Fs' whatever the material, ensuring that these beautiful parts are ready for action on the French Riviera, the only downside is they didn't need hand delivering! 😎

01/04/2022

One of the big advantages of having a reputation as an agile, reactive supplier, is the ability to respond to changes in customers’ requirements, whether they be small, subtle developments or ground breaking, major transformations. At JWA, over the past twelve months, we have been involved in projects for two different customers, both concerned with significant changes in the same championship. As with public motoring, there is an increasing shift towards ‘greener’ methods of propulsion in motorsport, and while for some the jury is still out on the most effective method to achieve this, the majority of championships are initially favouring the electric battery powered route. With the obvious exceptions, such as formula E, most are dipping their toe with an initial hybrid system and this year’s British Touring Car Championship, BTCC, is the latest to follow suit. Their particular interpretation, a predominantly traditional petrol driven system with a set amount of available electrical power per lap to be used at a drivers discretion, has inevitably meant necessary changes in many aspects of the car. Two of our customers have been faced with challenges in different areas of integrating this new system, however both had one thing in common, the problem solving abilities of JWA 😀. One customer, already providing the traditional fire suppression system, was now tasked with adding a dual system capable of extinguishing an electrical fire and employed our prototyping services to perfect the solution. With the cars entering the final stages of development, and therefore unable to enter into too much detail, our other customer was basically concerned with incorporating the new electrical drive system alongside the existing power plant, without compromising eithers performance. This has meant a number of new components and assemblies leaving JWA HQ, which often, due to the understandable confidentiality surrounding the projects, has left the workshop team scratching their heads at exactly what the parts were for. It was therefore a very welcome and generous gesture from one of the customers, to invite all of the guys involved in the various stages of production, to the initial testing of the new hybrid car at Donington Park last Tuesday. Here they got to see the result of all their hard work, the weekends and late nights required to meet the deadlines, turning a wheel for the first time. We now can’t wait for the season to start!

We have been members of The Motorsport Industry Association for the past four years. Like most industry bodies they champion our sector at every opportunity, ensuring that the wider world is regularly reminded of the unique advantages motorsport companies can bring to the party. At JWA we are obviously keen to widen our customer base into as many different sectors as possible, and over recent years have attended introductory events to showcase our talents at venues as diverse as Bovington tank museum and the Southampton Boat Show. We embody the motorsport mindset and 'can do attitude' that the MIA is keen to make clients such as the MOD aware of, and ultimately benefit from. No other industry works to such exacting deadlines or invests higher turnover percentages into R&D, always striving for that small advantage which will make the crucial difference. Certainly at JWA, our background of constantly looking to gain an edge by making parts lighter, stronger and ultimately faster, has transferred very well into industries that previously didn't have a history of routinely re-evaluating their processes in the pursuit of efficiency. In our particular case, the experience of high end motorsport and the condensed timescales required in designing and supplying parts has benefited a number of new clients outside of our normal racing circles, and with the help of the MIA, we look forward to achieving this for many more.

A casual conversation in the office earlier today, during our notorious Friday sandwich club, caused everyone at JWA HQ to realise that it is an incredible 10 years to the week that we received confirmation of our acceptance into the 2012 World Endurance Championship. Obviously this was pretty seismic news in itself, without the fact that it also meant an entry into a certain low key, 24 hour race in rural France as part of the seasons calendar!
A lifelong ambition of the MD, racing at the Le Mans 24 Hour is the pinnacle of our on track achievements to date and something for the team to be justifiably proud. However having managed to secure an entrance to the inaugural season of the WEC, with its Gallic highlight, maybe a bigger source of pride should be gleaned from a lesser known fact? Of all the entrants, including factory backed teams, that competed over the eight rounds of the Championship, at iconic tracks such as Sebring, Spa, Silverstone, Le Mans and Fuji, only one outfit completed every race...................yep you guessed it, the crew from North Staffordshire! Here's to returning to those heights, watch this space! 😀😉👍

Never a bad way to end the week, some positive feedback from a very happy customer. In this particular case it is a new client of ours, a race preparation team based in France, who incidentally have previously been pit lane rivals of ours.
They recently approached us, searching for a method of safely raising their formula four car to 'working height' when they were away racing or testing, and therefore without the benefits of their usual workshop facilities. The initial question of lifting the car was a straightforward one for us, as we simply selected the relevant model from our range of pneumatic car lifts and the adaptions necessary for a single seater. The main obstacle of their requirement however, was the timescale, with a very small window of opportunity available in which to have the lifts built, and delivered, all in time for a key test date. Regular followers will know that we pride ourselves at JWA HQ, on our reactivity to customers requirements and flexibility of production, that enables us to respond to even the most challenging of lead times. Happily, this occasion proved to be no different, and as you can see in the images kindly provided by our very satisfied customers, the lifts made it in time for a successful 'dry run' in their workshop, before leaving with the team for the test track. 😀👍

A fantastic bit of Friday fabrication on its way to an Historic Racing customer today at JWA HQ.
In order to keep these beautiful machines on track, racing and most importantly safe, it is vital that parts showing excess wear and tear are replaced. However it is also necessary to ensure that the new part is a faithful replica of the original, in order to maintain the cars overall authenticity.
This brake pedal from a 1985 Tolman TG185 Formula one car, reproduced by the excellent fabrication department at JWA, is a great example on both counts, enhancing the safety of the car while keeping it as close a representation of the 80's original as possible.

At JWA we may be guilty of constantly striving to spread the word of our extensive design and engineering prowess far and wide, never missing an opportunity to enlighten even the most casual of observers about our numerous capabilities and news of the many exciting projects we become involved in, however readers will be glad to hear that world domination isn’t on our agenda just yet! 😀
On that basis, they may also be relieved to discover that the image below is not therefore one of our new robot army, but the far more innocent picture of a recent order from a client for multiple sets of our pneumatic car lifts! We have supplied numerous different incarnations of these to customers over the years, ranging from a basic model capable of lifting 600kg, through to a set required to lift an electrically powered race car, which with the batteries on board weighed around an eye watering 2 tons.
Whatever the model they are invaluable both in the workshop and at track side, whether it be manoeuvring cars in limited space or providing a portable and efficient method of raising them to ‘working height’. With the amount of work on at JWA HQ, our own set are in constant use, looks like world domination will have to wait for now! 😉

A sign of the times and a great way to start 2022!
There are a number of local businesses that JWA has the privilege to refer to as not only customers and suppliers, but more importantly, good friends 😊. Mike and Sarah Tickner, the husband and wife team responsible for HCI Systems, a company specialising in vehicle electrical systems and wiring, certainly fall into this category. Based just up the road in Newport, Shropshire, the firm has gone from strength to strength in recent years and they have just celebrated their 10th year in business by moving to a brand new facility at Ni Park, on the edge of Newport.
The two businesses motorsport DNA ensures they ‘dovetail’ very effectively, not only as suppliers for their respective projects, but more recently able to introduce each other to new clients and collaborate on the same contracts.
Unsurprisingly therefore, when Mike and Sarah decided they needed a smart new sign to adorn the reception area of their new premises, a call was made to their neighbours in Staffordshire, who were obviously only to pleased to help. The pictures below are of the finished work proudly fitted in its new home and we're certain this will be the first of many similar commissions between JWA and HCI in 2022, onwards and upwards! 😀👍
