On 29th September the Lord Mayor attended Packmoor Ormiston Primary School and conducted a speed survey on Mellor Street with the Junior Road Safety Officers. The students surveyed over 40 vehicles! We even saw one vehicle travelling at 34mph!

25% of parents say traffic is too fast for their children to walk to school.
A crash at 30mph has twice as much energy and destructive potential as a crash at 20mph.

When it comes road safety, speed matters.
In a collision, 1mph can mean the difference between life and death.
• The formula is simple: the higher the speed, the longer the stopping distance, the harder the crash, and the greater the risk of death and injury.
• Speed and stopping distances don’t increase at the same rate. Small increases in speed result in bigger increases in stopping distances.
• A vehicle travelling at 20mph would stop in time to avoid a child running out three car lengths in front. The same vehicle travelling at 25mph would not be able to stop in time and would hit the child 18mph. this is roughly the same impact as a child falling from an upstairs window.

Do you know your stopping distances? Test your knowledge here- https://www.brake.org.uk/road-safety-week/resources-for-everyone -distances-calculator

Today, Sunday 19th November, is the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Today is also the start of Brake Road Safety week.

Today we would like to ask you to take a few moments out of your day to remember all the people killed or seriously injured on the roads, and acknowledge the vital work all our emergency services carry out when attending these collisions. Travel Smart SOT

Next week is national Community Rail Week. Look out for special rail-related activities going on all around the country, at stations and elsewhere. Emma will be taking school children on some special Duck Bills walks around Stoke on Tuesday and Thursday. I will be at Crewe Station, Platform 6, with some of our volunteers, on Thursday and Friday. Why not have a go on our Train Treasure Map activity and see if you can find one of 3 Railcard prizes? We'll also have some freebies, activity sheets and leaflets to give out.

Love going to Packmoor Ormiston Academy and supporting them with their and activities. Finally got the blue paint off my hand too!

Sarah Grattage, of Stoke on Trent Council, visited our Nursery and Reception children yesterday to celebrate our Beep Beep day. The children had lots of fun learning about road safety and Sarah also awarded us with our platinum Modeshift Starts award.
