With our new cruising season starting next Thursday, many of you are joining us this year on cruises taking in the wonderful St Kilda archipelago. What better time then to re-share this little video of the pyramidal sea stack of Stac an Armin, the highest in the UK at 196 metres. This qualifies it as a 'Marilyn' in the lexicon of climbers. For wildlife lovers though it is also home to colony of gannets along with the isle of Boreray and the more rounded Stac Lee in the background. Famously it was also the last location a Great Auk was seen in the UK in June of 1840 when 3 islanders from the main island of Hirta took it and eventually killed it.

3 x Puffin Islands Cruise departing soon!

Departing this month on Saturday 27th April, this amazing adventure cruise will spend 9-nights visiting the wildlife and seabird hotspots of Lunga in the Treshnish Isles, the Shiant Isles of the Minch, and the remote archipelago of St Kilda.

Puffins are the main attraction at this time of year and you will get great chances to see and spend time observing them at each location during time on shore. Don't forget your camera!

Of course there are many other scenic and wildlife highlights to be seen as well, from ancient settlements, to gannets, white-tailed eagles, and even whales and dolphins hopefully along the way.

Please don't miss out - there are just 2 cabins left now on the Hjalmar Bjørge for this spectacular wildlife adventure. The length of this cruise gives us plenty of time to await a suitable weather window to make the crossing to St Kilda and back, 40 miles out into the Atlantic. Plus, we always have several excellent backup locations ready just in case thanks to our very experienced skippers who will make sure you are comfortable and enjoy every day to the maximum.

Full details via our contact details below. Please get in touch today so you don't miss out on what is sure to be a very memorable trip.

The distinctive profile of the Eilean Glas lighthouse on Scalpay is a colourful beacon amid the otherwise sombre hues of the dramatic Hebridean landscape.

A lighthouse was first established in 1789 and it was built by Thomas Smith for all you pharologists out there. Its light first shone on October 10th 1789.

However the present tower was built by Robert Stevenson in 1824, raising the light higher to 73 feet above sea level. The light was converted to automatic operation in 1978 and still shines today as it stands sentinel near to the entrance to Tarbert harbour on Harris.

One from the archives today showing the Hjalmar Bjørge in her original white livery of the NSSR (Norsk Selskab til Skibbrudnes Redning or Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue). Such a proud heritage to have, and such a seaworthy boat too of course, having been built to withstand the worst the North and Norwegian Sea's could throw at her.

We were delighted to attend this inaugural event recently hosted by our charity partner Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust in Oban. A great way to celebrate how the west coast cruise and boat operators help support citizen science through the use of the Whale track app.

We welcomed a number of wildlife tour providers and boat operators to our first ever Whale Track Boat Operator Event, sharing good practice and celebrating the contributions these companies make to marine science.

Back in 2014, Marc Calhoun, author of the soon to be published "Thirty Years of Adventures in Search of the Past - The Outer Hebrides", and host of our 9-night September "Adventures in Search of the Past" cruise, took a trip to the remote Hebridean island of Sandray. There he climbed the hills to view the remote fort of Dun Sandray which he photographed with the eastern tip of Pabbay in the background.
The outer wall is slightly unusual in being oval in shape, perhaps to fit better to its location on top of a rocky knoll it is surmised. However, archaeologists believe excavation would probably show the interior to be circular most likely as was more normal. There is evidence still of galleries that would have separated the building vertically into different spaces.
This is just one of the possible historic sites you might visit with Marc this year if you join his cruise. There are just 2 cabins left so please don't wait to book if you are interested in learning more about the amazing history of the Hebrides.

The famous curved street of Village Bay on the main island of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago, is a very recognisable sight to those familiar with the history of the Outer Hebrides. Did you know though that this was only originally laid out in the 1830's by the Reverend Neil Mackenzie utilising the typical one-room Blackhouse style of the time accommodating the family and their livestock during the harsh winters. In the 1860's new houses were added that had two main rooms as an upgrade of sorts.
Prior to this, dwellings consisted of double stone-walled buildings with straw-thatched roofs weighed down with stones to stop them being blown away, the little town having "four orderly streets".
We can thoroughly recommend reading "Buildings of St Kilda" by Geoffrey P Stell and Mary Harman for The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (https://i.rcahms.gov.uk/canmore-pdf/WP00003855.pdf).
To see St Kilda for yourself please join us on our Hebridean Island Odyssey cruise this late April and see and experience the history of this special place. Duart Castle on Mull is perhaps one of the most striking landmarks of this famous island. Our Hebridean Adventures cruises on the Hjalmar Bjørge regularly pass by as we prepare to sail up the Sound of Mull, where for over 700 years this stronghold has stood guard over the approach.

Home of the ancient Clan Maclean, it is still privately owned by the family but open to the public (1st April to 18th October 2024), welcoming visitors and clansmen alike.

From around the 18th Century the castle had been in complete ruin, but extensive renovations were begun back in 1911 after the purchase by Sir Fitzroy Maclean to bring it back into the family, and completed by 1912, celebrated by a great gathering of the Clan.

This was obviously one cool customer - a very early basking shark for Scottish waters. Let's hope there are plenty around this season so we can enjoy watching them on our cruises when we come across them. No promises we will be able to repeat the breaching action captured by guest Jeff Dosset on camera last year though, but we can hope! 🦈

🦈 Basking shark sighted in February! We were thrilled to see an early report of this giant fish in Scottish seas, recorded off the coast of Arran by Whale Tracker Peter. Just a couple of days later, our friends at Irish Whale and Dolphin Group also had their first report off the Irish coast.

🗣️ These gentle giants were hunted extensively in Scotland's waters, with the last commercially caught as recently as the 90's. Now protected in our seas, the basking shark has a chance to recover, but we still have large gaps in our knowledge of this huge creature. Join Colin Speedie at our Winter Webinar tomorrow evening to discover more about the species and how we might help the population recover from the brink.

🙌 Thanks so much to everyone in our Whale Track community, who report what they've spotted and are building a better understanding of marine species off Scotland's coast. Thanks also to the dedicated team of verification volunteers, who diligently check sightings reported through our app, Whale Track. Anyone can get involved, just download the app today and report what you've spotted!

We were delighted to attend the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust's Whale Track Boat Operator Celebration at the SAMS premises in Oban on Tuesday. It was a fascinating summary of everyone's findings and sightings, and of course it is great to know that taking time to capture all this observation data and photographs in the Whale Track app really does help make a difference. Citizen science at its best!
We were also pleased that our sei whale video by Alyssa, and our guest Jeff's pictures of a breaching basking shark made it into the top sightings of the year. Thanks to all involved for a great event.

13/02/2024

The Bullough Mausoleum on Rum is perhaps one of the most out-of-place yet striking looking structures in all the islands of the Hebrides.
It was built circa 1900 for John Bullough, who ran a very successful Lancashire textile machinery business and who purchased the Isle of Rum in 1888 as a sporting estate. Unfortunately he died just 3 years later in 1891, originally being interred in a rock-cut tomb nearby. His son Sir George decided that was not fitting and had the Grecian style sandstone Mausoleum built and moved his father to that, apparently blowing up the original tomb. There are now 3 sarcophagi for John, Sir George and his widow, Lady Monica.
Join author Marc Calhoun this September to discover and visit historic and ancient structures like these on several Hebridean islands on his 9-night hosted "Adventures in Search of the Past' cruise from Oban.
His latest book "Thirty Years of Adventures in the Search of the Past " The Outer Hebrides" is due to be published in May.
