Well, what an adventure! Our trip to Kerala is now over. We’re on the way to the airport to catch our flight via Dubai.

It’s an early start, but everyone is in good spirits and we’ve not left anyone behind!

We’ve spent the last three nights by the beach in Mararikulam. We stayed at the beautiful Xandari Pearl Beach Resort, where we enjoyed massages, a cooking class, sunbathing, watching beautiful sunsets and had a delicious, many course farewell dinner by the pool.

The food here has probably been my favourite, which is a high accolade indeed as all meals in Kerala have been amazing.

I’ve loved my time in Kerala and would love to send you all here. It’s a wonderful area of the world, and probably a little less visited than places such a Sri Lanka, but this adds to the charm, as we felt Kerala was very unspoilt by mass tourism and simply beautiful.

I’ll be back in the office on Wednesday and would love to hear from you, whether you’d like a tailor made trip to Kerala or anywhere else on this magnificent planet.

Staying the night on a houseboat is a must if visiting Kerala and we loved our houseboat experience! We stayed in three houseboats, each with three bedrooms, run by Xandari Riverscapes.

All meals are included and were fantastic and plentiful - our houseboat staff spoilt us and countinously offered us treats and meals.

The houseboat was very comfortable and sailing through the backwaters, watching the world go by has to be one of the most relaxing ways to travel!

Next to Mararikulam, and our final three nights in Kerala spent relaxing by the beach.

Leaving Kumarakom, and wow what a place!
We stayed at Zuri Kumarakom and had two days of total relaxation. It’s almost compulsory to have a massage here and we all complied!

The specialty here are ayurvedic treatments and I had the most relaxing ayurvedic back massage. My masseuse was tiny but with the strength of a giant. Prices are so reasonable that we’ve all vowed to have a few more in our next few days!

The hotel has complimentary yoga and sunset boat rides for £3 or so, where we cruised down the backwaters and watched fabulous sunsets.

We spent the rest of the time relaxing by the pool, strolling by the backwaters and eating delicious food.

Next stop- on to the backwaters and on a houseboat for a night.

Thekkady is a must if visiting Kerala, and we loved our stay in this jungle paradise!

We had two nights at Cardamon County hotel, a beautiful property surrounded by lush forests.

The hotel is situated a short distance from Periyar Tiger reserve, where we enjoyed a fantastic trek through the foliage before rafting on the reservoir. The reserve is stunningly beautiful and while it does have tigers, bears, elephants and other big creatures within, we saw buffalo, monkeys, numerous birds and the occasional huge spider. However, it’s still worth a visit to experience this wonderful park.
The rafting was so relaxing and scenery so lovely - and the guides very knowledgeable.

We also visited a spice plantation close by, where John, our guide showed us where many of the spices we used come from. I have to admit I bought quite a few to bring back home, in an attempt to recreate some of the unbelievably tasty dishes we’ve had!

We spent an hour watching a show at Kadathanadan Kalari, where they performed Kalaripayattu-the oldest of martial arts. This was fascinating to watch, and involved swords, jumping, shields, huge sticks, fire and more.
We enjoyed participating and posing with the weapons too!

We are heading back East today, towards the coast and continuing our adventure with a couple of nights in Kumarakom.

We’ve had a wonderful couple of days in Kochi, a fabulous start to our Kerala adventure!

Flying Emirates meant we connected through Dubai effortlessly (even with an hour delay and a bit of a jog!) and we arrived in Kochi the next morning. A delicious lunch and a short nap later, we were ready for our multi course welcome dinner.

The food in Kochi has been amazing. Similar to Sri Lankan food, in terms of coconut enriched curries and hoppers type bread, but also with a Keralan twist. I’ve been blown away by the flavours (and the slight spicy kick) and want to recreate the tastes at home, if I can!

We had a wonderful tour on our first full day in Kochi. We visited the Chinese fishing nets, Dhobi Khana (a clothes washing shop where they washed everything by hand but thoroughly!), the Dutch Palace and Jew Town, where a huge Jewish population lived for centuries (but not so large now).

In the evening with saw a traditional dance show, a fascinating and slightly strange play with unbelievable costumes and talented actors.

We stayed at Fragrant Nature Kochi, a great boutique hotel situated in the old town. The rooms were lovely, and staff looked after us well. The area is a bit run down but added to the charm!

Onwards now to our next stop, Thekkady!
