The Gower Monument, a Grade II* listed landmark in Stratford-upon-Avon, was unveiled in 1888. Designed over 12 years in Paris by Lord Ronald Gower and collaborators, it features a bronze statue of William Shakespeare seated atop a stone plinth inscribed with quotes from Henry V, Henry IV Part 2, Macbeth, and Hamlet. Four bronze statues—Prince Hal (history), Hamlet (philosophy), Lady Macbeth (tragedy), and Falstaff (comedy)—stand on separate pedestals, symbolising Shakespeare’s creative range.

Originally placed behind the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, the monument was unveiled with speeches from Sir Francis Philip Cunliffe-Owen and Oscar Wilde. It faced criticism from Punch magazine for its ‘unoriginal’ design. After a fire in 1926, it was relocated to Bancroft Gardens in 1933, where it remains a celebrated tribute to the Bard.
