It's party time!!! Tonight (16th January) and tomorrow (17th) sees the climax of the San Antoni fiesta, one of the most iconic and colourful in the Mallorcan calendar.
Honoring the patron saint of animals, Saint Anthony, celebrations are held all over the island, but the most spectacular 'demons dance' and parade is in Sa Pobla. After dark, over 100 bonfires are lit whilst locals dressed as the devil and wielding pitchforks chase and play tricks on the gathered crowds, accompanied by the banging of ximbombes (drums). Traditional foods like sobrassada, botifarra sausage and espiganada and sweet red pepper pies are eaten and wine drunk. The firework parade begins at 9.45 this evening.
The religious part of the festival takes place tomorrow, where domesticated animals are brought to local churches to be blessed by the priest, whilst larger farm animals gather in local squares for the same. The animal parade in Sa Pobla starts at 4.30 pm.
