It might be the hottest week of summer, but tonight Sicilians will party like it's...well, 2024 🎉

August 15th is Ferragosto, Italy's national holiday to celebrate the feast of Assumption, when the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven. Sweet!

Originally called Feriae Augusti, the festival of Emperor Augustus started back in 18 BC, where he declared Italy closed for month to allow Italians a break from working in the fields.

Although shortened to two weeks, culminating tomorrow, Ferragosto is still Italy's favourite national holiday.

But it's tonight –Ferragosto Eve– when the fun really begins. The traditional way to celebrate is with a big barbecue on the beach with family and friends, followed by a midnight dip in the sea. Heaven!

It's TASTY TUESDAY!

Kefalonia is Kween when it comes to good food. Artichoke pie, where the pastry is made with olive oil and wine. Bifteki, a huge meatball stuffed with cheese, onions and peppers. Kreatopita, a traditional filo and meat pie. It's a glorious Grecian feast!

Get the bunting out, Mallorca LOVES a festival!

On the 2nd August, Pollenca celebrates its patron saint, Mare de Déu dels Àngels with a big ole scrap.

Part of the week-long La Patrona Festival, this legendary mock battle recreates the pirate attack from 1550.

Expect the clashing of swords and gnashing of jaws as the Christians and Moors fight it out – all in good fun, of course - and finishes with a brilliant fireworks display.

Start flexing, it's officially Olympics season! 💪

The Paris 2024 Olympics opened with a 🎉 on Friday and we're already seeing the medals start to roll in.

Of course, this muscle-flexing shenanigans began over 2,700 years ago in 776BC in Olympia, Greece.

It was banned in 393AD by Emperor Theodosius I, who deemed the games equivalent to paganism. (Really!)

More than a millennia later, the first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896.

And while Greece has only hosted the Olympic Games once since in 2004, where better to flex those Olympic muscles than in one of our fancy pants villas in Crete and Kefalonia?

Happy summer solstice 🌞

We made it, team. It's the longest day of the year! Whoohoo! 🎉

We all know the ancient Greeks loved a celebration and summer solstice was no different. It was particularly special as in certain Ancient Greek calendars, the summer solstice was considered the start of the new year.

One of the best festivals was Kronia, which celebrated the harvest god, Cronus. During this feast, the normal social order of society was turned on its head and the high echelons of society would serve their slaves.

📢*NEW ARCHEOLOGICAL FIND KLAXON*📢

As if Crete couldn't any more fascinating, a huge 4,000-year-old Minoan monument has just been discovered on the top of Papoura Hill.

The vast ring-shaped stone circle was unearthed during an excavation for the new Heraklion Crete International Airport, near the town of Kastelli.

Spreading some 1,800 square metres, archaeologists from the Greek Ministry of Culture are now investigating the Bronze Age labyrinth and suggest it may have been a ritual ground. Could it be linked to the Minotaur, Crete's mythical part man-part bull creature? Exciting times! 🐂

Oh Kefalonia, Kefalonia, why are you so...umm gorgeous (sorry, nothing rhymes with Kefalonia 😬)

One of our favourite Greek islands, Kefalonia runs the full gamut of underground lakes, hot springs, mythical caves and heavenly beaches. Famously the setting for the novel and subsequent movie, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which means the great Nicolas Cage and her royal highness Penelope Cruz have also graced these perfect shores. Swoon.

Home to sea turtles, goats with golden teeth and a 'stone that moves', it's well worth using your precious holiday allowance on a week or two here. Stay near Fiskardo, a tiny fishing town on the north coast which has beautiful candy-coloured Venetian buildings and a gorgeous little cove. A short hop away is Pithari Stone Villa, a shiny new villa with a fab pool and views over the Ionian Sea.

Of course, there's more to a Crete holiday than sunshine, sandy beaches and smoky souvlakis.

Greece's largest island is jam-packed with fascinating places to visit. One of our favourite day trips is to Spinalonga, a tiny island off the northeastern coast.

No, it's not a tasty spinach and cheese pie – that's spanakopita– Spinalonga is an island in the Gulf of Elounda which was an actual l***r colony until 1957.

One of the last in Europe, from the early 20th century l***rs were still shipped to the tiny teardrop-shaped island and led through Dante’s Gate, a tunnel into the colony. Thanks to its history, it was also the setting for Victoria Hislop’s best-selling novel, The Island - which is well worth a read.

Sicily was the inimitable location for movies including The Godfather I and II, The Big Blue and Cinema Paradiso.

Considered one of the best coming-of-age films of last century, the simply heavenly Cinema Paradiso was largely shot in director Giuseppe Tornatore's hometown of Bagheria on Sicily's northern coast.
