We are delighted to announce that the Barony Mill will soon be re-opening for the summer.

From Monday 29 April, Barony Mill will be open to the public offering guided tours of Orkney’s only remaining working water mill. The tours are a chance for visitors to learn more about the history of bere and the traditional methods we use to milling our flour.

The Barony Mill will be open for tours seven days a week from 11am until the last tour at 4.15pm. Tours last approximately 30 minutes and are suitable for all ages, but please be advised you will need to climb some stairs to reach the upper floors. Tours cost £5 for adults, with children admitted for free.

We also have a shop onsite where we sell beremeal flour and products made with beremeal, as well as other souvenirs.

Visitors can drop in if they are passing, but we do recommend you book a place on a tour to avoid disappointment. You can book a tour by telephoning the Mill on (01856) 721 439, or at the Mill shop.

We hope to see you over the summer!

Raymond certainly took this photo at a perfect time. Simply stunning!

When I gave a talk on wildlife photography at the Orkney Field Club last week someone asked if I ever photographed the Aurora. Afterwards I thought that maybe my answer had been a bit flippant. I'd rather just stand and watch and enjoy it and so said 'I'm really not that interested in doing it".

But then I thought maybe I should try harder. This is my only decent image from tonight amongst all the cloud looking towards Costa head. The nicest part of the evening was just having Olivia's company, eating Penguin biscuits and listening to Led Zeppelin together on the way home.

Balfour Castle is aptly known as a Calendar House. It has seven turrets, twelve exterior doors, 52 rooms, and 365 panes of glass. Balfour Castle is an imposing structure on the southwest end of Shapinsay Island of Orkney.

Though built around an older structure that dates at least from the 18th century, the present castle was built in 1847, commissioned by Colonel David Balfour, and designed by Edinburgh architect David Bryce.

It is a Category A listed building and the landscape and formal gardens are listed in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.
