The guiding season has started and despite it being late Spring we have had some amazing weather recently! Our South Hoy and Walls trip last week took us down to Longhope, with visits to the Napoleonic Hackness Martello Tower and Battery, Longhope Lifeboat Museum and the Longhope Lifeboat Memorial; it was on 17th March 1969, that the Longhope Lifeboat T.G.B. capsized in mountainous seas while on service to the Liberian vessel Irene. The lifeboat’s entire crew of eight lost their lives as they selflessly headed towards the cargo ship.

The cycling is easy on South Hoy, with gentle roads along the coastline and an abundance of wildlife and heritage to see. Total distance is 24 miles at an easy pace and with plenty of stops along the way.

Puffin photo-bomb warning 😁! It's not long before we restart our day trips on two wheels to Westray to see these amazing pelagic seabirds. We will guide you around the island, exploring the beautiful scenery and wildlife. This is definitely a 'bucket list' day out if you are visiting Orkney.

50km shake-down ride for the new bike and what a day for it on our longer version West Mainland route, with Marwick Head and Kitchener Memorial looking amazing in the late Winter sun. And we also threw in a ride around HMS Tern (RNAS Twatt) before finishing off with a visit to the Ring of Brodgar and Standing Stones of Stenness. Our West Mainland route, which is completely flexible and ranges from 32km to 52km total ride length, also includes a visit to Skara Brae and Maeshowe ... all in a day! Two wheels really is the way to explore Orkney ❤️.

Happy New Year! We are super excited that the New Year has finally arrived, the days are getting longer and our mountain bike guiding season is now only 12 weeks away (25th March)! We have some fantastic day routes planned this year covering Mainland Orkney, Hoy, Flotta, Sanday, Westray and Stronsay, and we can cater for riders who are new to mountain biking, as well as more seasoned riders. We even provide coaching on how to get the best out of the bike and improve your confidence over a variety of terrains. And this year we are also offering mountain bike hire for those riders who may wish to ride by themselves without the assistance of a guide - Trek Marlin 6 mountain bikes at £35 per day, including helmet. Discounts are available for multiple bikes/days. Why not check out our website www.rideorkney.com to discover more!

Autumn provides an opportunity for the Ride Orkney team to explore further afield - Burma Road, a 44km >2800ft ascent route over the Monadhliath mountains. A brutal and relentless 5.5km, 1400ft of ascent (10% gradient) to start, but amazing views, flowy descents and single track riding to enjoy.

** Broga for sports clubs and individuals.** Do you want to improve your own or your team's performance on the pitch, course or track, and reduce the risk of injury? If so, why not consider introducing a Broga session to your team workouts over the winter. I offer a range of sports specific Broga classes for sports clubs and individuals, with prices from £30 per class.

What is Broga?
Broga = Yoga + Fitness + Cardio

Founded by ex-American Footballer, pro bodybuilder and training coach, Matt Miller, Broga incorporates cardio fitness, strength building, and yoga stretching simultaneously in one workout.

What makes Broga different from traditional yoga classes? Firstly, it’s a proper workout; there’s a massive fitness element to it which focuses on increasing flexibility, strength, stamina, concentration, endurance, and athletic performance. It helps speed up recovery times and also improves range of balance, motion and mobility.

Secondly, it doesn’t assume you know anything. It lets you build up and progress, with exercises specifically designed to establish connections that open up typically tight areas like the chest, hips, and hamstrings.

If you are interested in a Broga session for your club or team just send me a PM with your details.

Another fantastic day guiding around North Hoy and what a superb day for it. Our North Hoy route will take you on a 20km cycle along quiet roads and beach tracks and includes an 8km walk. And with views like these it's definitely worth it, and far better on two wheels.
