In "In Search of the Northern Isles", 1935, Orkney took H V Morton by surprise.
"I had expected to see bleak, poor mountain country with miles of moor and peat hag, flooded with many lochs ... Orkney is not a bit like this ... Mainland is perhaps the best-looking, and certainly one of the richest, agricultural districts in Great Britain. How surprising it is to discover that the barrenness of Caithness and the north of Scotland ends there, and that an abundant fertility, reminding one of East Lothian, is revived far off amid the northern seas."
