Norsemen from Norway colonized Orkney in the 8th century. Then they just decided to outright invade and annex Orkney in 875 AD. Cue hundreds and hundreds of years of Viking rule, until it was used as dowry by Danish King Christian I for his daughter’s hand in marriage to James III of Scotland.

This postcard of Rackwick in Hoy is one of the best images I have seen of simman roofs. Simmans were ropes made of straw that were taken to and fro over a flagstone roof, weighted with a heavy stone at each turn. A thatched roof in Orkney needed to be well held down. I am fascinated to see that the farm building has a simman roof too.

In 1850, a farmer found a secret village. It was later determined to be older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Archeologists estimated that 100 people lived in this village named Skara Brae, the "Scottish Pompeii." The houses were connected to each other by tunnels, and each house could be closed off with a stone door.
