FEI ban trimming the whiskers of competition horses

From July this year, horses who have had their sensory hairs removed (unless for veterinary reasons) will be disqualified from FEI competitions, with other governing bodies following suit.

Why are whiskers important?
A horse’s whiskers (also known as vibrissae) are sensory hairs that provide valuable information to the horse. They have their own nerve and blood supply. The long and thick hairs are tactical receptors, which act as a β€˜third eye’, and help them gain a sense of their surroundings. The whiskers enable the horse to sense the environment in their blind spot and identify objects. Therefore, whiskers ought to be left as nature intended!

Now we know that a lot of you still ask how this little man is doing, so we thought it high time that we posted an update!

Gizmo has a lovely life being Hailey's darling. He has learnt to jump last year and of course is perfect at everything, trying his little heart out. But what Hailey really wants for Gizmo, is for him to have fun with children! This dream came true a few weeks ago when Gizmo was borrowed by Hailey's friend, to attend pony club as a ride for her daughter. Now Rosie is an amazing little jockey, at only 5 years old and having only ridden Shetlands before, she climbed aboard and felt at home. Hailey had envisaged Gizmo being on lead rein for his first outing in around 4 years, but Rosie was so confident off she went and did the Easter Pony club on her own! Of course Gizmo was amazing and had such a good time. He looked after Rosie and was impeccably well behaved, even staying away from home for a bit too! From the photos you can see how cute they were together and that he was shattered by the end of his holiday, boy did he sleep well when he got home!

Hailey is so proud of him, at 7 he is just THE BEST most well behaved little horse she could wish for and hopes that more children get to enjoy him in the future. X###
