Do not skip either of the first two steps. Calm the child down, help them regulate breathing and have a clear head so they can hear you. Relate to them, “that was hard for you, I saw what happened there that was scary/sad/frustrating” (name feelings to extend feeling vocabulary) then and only then reason with them, ‘instead of doing X why not try Y’ etc “let me tie your shoe laces and keep you safe” etc. Regulate-Relate-Reason.

In Play Therapy, the therapeutic relationship acts as a catalyst for healing. When children feel understood and supported by the therapist, they are more likely to open up, express their inner struggles, and engage in meaningful therapeutic play.

The Netflix murder-fest is clearly inappropriate for children, but they are being exposed to it anyway. And teenagers are drawn to dystopian fiction. What parents can do.

We like to think of it as being "elastic" in the face of stress....free play is an essential ingredient of resiliency!

Jessica Joelle Alexander had such a wonderful presentation this morning at our conference. We are so grateful for the feedback that we have received today, and look forward to conferences to come!

How can I prepare my child for preschool? PLAY.

What can I do with my kiddo at home in addition to sending her to preschool? PLAY.

How can I help my child learn to write? PLAY.

What should my big kids do after school? PLAY.

Play helps stimulate the brain to make connections between nerve cells. This helps kids develop both gross motor skills AND fine motor skills.

When kids learn a skill through play it is so much more effective than when they've been drilled through flashcards, worksheets, or activities that are too structured.

The American Journal of Play (which would be such a fun thing to study!) shares ten reasons why you should make play a part of your everyday life. Here are my favorites...

✅ Play Strengthens You
✅ Play Helps You Solve Problems
✅ Play Boosts Creativity
✅ Play Reduces Stress
✅ Play Helps You Make Friends
✅ Play Builds Resilience
✅ Play Promotes Discovery
✅ Play is Fun

As you think towards the future with your kiddos, do whatever you can to protect play. Plan for it. Schedule it in if you have to. This year I have learned even more than ever before that play, especially uninterrupted play, is enough.

Guard that time for your kids. Resist the urge to overschedule things as life starts slowly returning to “normal.”

Yes it can be messy and unstructured, unlike adult planned things. But during play time kids are also building their attention spans and learning to truly focus and problem solve. Skills that will serve them far better in life than some of the usual “learning skills” we might tend to focus on.

Your kids will be happier, more creative, and more resilient with time to play. 💕

The most illuminating example of therapeutic play I’ve heard was one that infant expert Magda Ge**er shared. She had been asked to visit a child care center, and while touring the infant playroom with the center director she noticed one of the children holding a spoon and placing the tip at the op...

One of the greatest game changers in doing this work is taking a root cause approach to challenging behaviors.

✨ When a child throws their toy
✨ When a child hits you, or another kiddo
✨ When a child is screaming

So often we find ourselves focused on those behaviors and how to make them stop as fast as possible, rather than what's going on beneath the surface. What's going on at the root.

What are they really communicating? What’s being said without words? What need are they, likely subconsciously or unconsciously, trying to meet? As long as we respond only to the behavior— punishing them for hitting, a time out for throwing the toy, yelling at them to stop screaming — we will continue to see the same or new behaviors surface. It’s like pushing pause temporarily, knowing it’ll be back until that need is met and root emotion is responded to.

The challenge is that behaviors can trigger our emotions and unmet needs.
We may have triggers come up from our past, inner narratives about our own childhood ("I never would have gotten away with hitting), or feel fears coming up about the future ("Will my child be a trouble maker? Will they always be hitting"). The true magic is when we can return to the present to SEE the child in front of us and get curious about their current need.

What narratives did you grow up with about behavior? What comes up for you in the moment?
