Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the page of Eureka - a unique name for a unique school! At Eureka we strive to create an atmosphere of belonging, where all children and adults feel safe, valued and included. We believe: ‘There can be no issue of greater importance to parents and carers, or to schools, than the safety of their children.’ Ofsted 2011. Eureka's children are happy, generous and har

dworking - showing a real passion for their school. Visitors comment on their positive attitude, and the genuine pride they have for their school. Their contribution is vital to the life of this wonderful place that opens the hearts and minds of everyone who has the pleasure to be involved with us. Our staff know the children and they know us - a mutual respect exists between us. We all strive to be the best we can by following our PRIDE (Presentation, Resilience, Independence, Determination, Engagement) ethos that makes us Eureka! Our ethos, and being 'Safe, Happy and Comfortable' underpin everything we do at Eureka. Our Governors work with the school to ensure that the children are given the best opportunities to develop their potential to the full. We are one big welcoming family and we hope that our website and this space on Facebook provides you with a true taste of all things 'Eureka!'
Our door is 'always open' should you want to visit us and share the Eureka Experience. Miss Cassie Hurt - Headteacher

A fantastic afternoon of sport over at Granville Academy for the Key stage 1 Mini Olympics. Our children were brilliantly behaved and the young coaches from Granville were a credit to their school. Thank you to all the parent helpers who came with us today and thank you to the several others who offered support.

Don't forget to vote for Eureka if you're over at Rosliston Forestry Centre this Easter holiday. Our entry to the competition was designed by Sebastian in Reception (with a little bit of help from his mummy) and was brought to life by the children in Adventurers.

This Friday (8.3.2024), the FA is organising the UK’s biggest ever football session for girls. The plan is to get all schools, colleges and youth groups to take part in a training session at some point during the day. At Eureka we would like to hold our session during lunchtime between 12:30 and 1:00. We will be taking part in several training drills on the field – and then in a few weeks time we will organise a match for the children to take part in involving the school houses.

If your daughter would like to take part in this football session then please just ask them to come in their P.E. kit on Friday. The session is open to all girls in Key Stage Two (Years 3 – 6).

13/02/2024

British Science Week is fast approaching (it runs between the 8th and 17th March) and it is an event that we always get involved in at Eureka. There will be activities in each class and several assemblies during the week.

To run alongside this, we will also be running a Poster Competition for children in EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 (with a prize for the three respective Key Stages).

This year’s theme is Time – celebrating 30 years of British Science Week. In assembly I suggested to the children that they may wish to focus their poster on one of the following themes.

• The evolution of humans or animals over time.
• The evolution of technology over time – this could be computers, games consoles, mobile phones, military technology, space technology, etc.
• The change in the climate over time, whether this be the past 150 years, or over 10’s of thousands of years.
• The changing shape of the world over time – from it’s formation to now.

These are just suggestions and we would encourage the children to let their imagination run with this theme – as long as there is a link to science and time.

There is no set size or format for the poster – they can be 2d or 3d, little or large and use any medium the children wish.

All entries will be displayed in the school library, the deadline for entries is Tuesday 26th March, 2024, with winners being announced in the celebration assembly that Friday. The winners will be entered into the National Competition – details of which are on the British Science Week website.

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths taking place between 8-17 March 2024!

A huge 'bravo' to everyone who performed at the Oakland's Centre today and a huge thank you to everyone who attended. The children were fantastic - they coped well with the heat and weren't fazed by the size of the crowd or singing with a brass band for the first time.

Well done to Mrs D'Oyley and Miss Baker for a well organised event, and a big thank you to Jonty and the musicians from Newmount Brass for giving up their time to perform with the choir. A really lovely 'Christmassy' afternoon. 🎅

A quick reminder that our Toy Sale is on again this afternoon - it will be taking place on the main school playground. The PTA are busy setting up the stalls now and there are lots of lovely toys and books left to buy so please bring your purse/wallet and grab a bargain in time for Xmas. All items now just 50p!

If you have any old or unused uniform that you no longer want or need then please could you bring it into the school office and give it to Mrs Condren. It will then be sorted into different sizes by some of our parent volunteers and be put on display from Monday 17th July for people to help themselves to for free in preparation for the next academic year.

Hopefully this will save people a little bit of money and also result in a little bit less waste.

A huge thank you to all of the children who took part in tonight's revival of the Eureka House Cup between Calke, Sudbury and Chatsworth. The games were all played in a competitive but friendly spirit and the children were all impeccably well-behaved as always!

After some close games the results were as follows:

Lower Key Stage Two (Years 3 and 4):
Champions - Chatsworth
Runners Up - Sudbury
Third Place - Calke

Upper Key Stage Two (Years 5 and 6)
Champions - Chatsworth
Runners Up - Calke
Third Place - Sudbury

A huge well done to all of the children for taking part, trying their best, encouraging each other and behaving well. A huge thank you to Mrs Edwards for stopping to help with First Aid (although she couldn't resist going into football manager mode at various points) and a big thank you to Mrs D'Oyley for allowing some members of the choir to join us tonight.

Congratulations to Joe and Reagan for winning the KS2 Science Poster Competition on the theme of 'Connections' with their fantastic poster detailing the link between chickens and humans - it was well written, beautifully presented and also showed a great connection between friends as they had worked together to create a great poster.

Our KS1 winner created a fantastic poster all about how humans, plants and the world around us are interconnected and used some fantastic art techniques to create a poster that really stands out!

Well done to all of our entrants who also received a certificate for their efforts - myself and Mrs Brooks had a very difficult decision picking only two winners this morning!

A few weeks ago Charley in Year 6 came to speak to us about starting a litter picking club at lunchtimes and since then has been doing a great job of organising that twice a week with her friends. During the assembly in which Charley was explaining about the litter picking club Mrs Brooks (one of our school parent governors) was inspired to get involved and help as well (with a little bit of help from South Derbyshire District Council). Today we had our first termly whole school litter pick (that proved so popular we ran out of hi-vis jackets and picking sticks!) The children have asked if we can do it every week but because Mr Curtis and Charley do such a good job of looking after the premises we've had to say that we'll only need to do it at the end of each term. Thank you to everyone who came to help at lunchtime today and a big thank you to Mrs Brooks, Charley and Luke for being our chief litter pickers!

Another busy week at Eureka with more visitors coming in and helping the children engage with our Curriculum.

Firstly, on Thursday we had Leanne from Severn Trent taking part in a virtual visit (due to the bad snowfall). She spoke to the children in Key Stage 2 all about 'hydration' and it's importance for our well-being. The children also learnt a catchy song to help them remember the key messages from the visit.

On the Friday we then had a visit from our local Member of Parliament - Heather Wheeler. She came in to speak to the children about Democracy in the United Kingdom and explained more about her role as an MP. She spoke about her links to South Derbyshire and how her job involves representing the people of South Derbyshire in parliament. She then spent 30 minutes answering some excellent questions from the children - all of which were well thought out and brought out some very interesting answers from our guest. We particularly liked Bailey's question about the hardest challenges that she has faced in her 13 years as an MP.

Today the children were visited by one of the PCSOs from the Swadlincote Police SNT to talk to them all about road safety. The children were given advice on when, where and how to cross the roads near to school safely - being reminding to always Stop, Look, Listen and Look again before crossing. The PCSO took some really interesting and well thought out questions from the children who were really engaged during the session.

The end of term is upon and we've really finished with a big finish this week; Sport's Day, the Year Six leaving Disco and Assembly, a family picnic and finally an assembly to say goodbye to two legends of our school; Miss Eyley and Mrs Fearn - who are riding off into the sunset to enjoy their very well-earned retirement.

Over the years the ladies have seen many children come and go, and then gone on to teach many children of those children! The ladies have made a real difference to the lives of so many and we'd like to say a heartfelt thank you for all their years of service and for the positive impact they've made on our community!

Enjoy your retirement ladies! Schools out - forever!

We are delighted to announce the winners of our Jubilee Portrait Competition:

Layton is the Key Stage One winner - we were really impressed by Layton's use of different art techniques and materials to create his portrait. This made it really stand out and catch the eye as you walk past it. An effort that must have taken some real time and effort - as you can see it has more than paid off.

Olivia is our Key Stage Two winner - I was immediately impressed by the style that Olivia had chosen to draw her portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth in. The eyes really draw you into the picture and then as you look around you can see how much care and attention has been paid to little details of the Queen's hair and face. The Union Flag background in colour provides a fantastic contrast to the black and white portrait. Fantastic!

As always, the standard of competition entries was very high and we have created a gallery of all of the children's work in the library area of school for you to look at when you visit.

Yesterday in assembly we launched our latest competition to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

We would like the children to create a portrait of the Queen in any style that they wish (such as Popart, cubist, surrealist) using any medium that they would like to (e.g. paint, collage, chalk, felt tip, crayon etc.) There is an art set on offer for the best effort in EYFS/Key Stage 1 and a set of acrylic paints on offer for the best portrait in Key Stage 2. Entries must be in by Thursday 9th June, 2022 and the winner will be announced the next day in assembly.

23/05/2022

Back in March we held a competition to design a poster showcasing or explaining 'growth'. We left the choice of subject up to the children and we had some great ideas come in - from video game growth to the growth of the universe. Unfortunately we didn't win the national competition but we couldn't let the children's hard work go unnoticed so we have chosen a Key Stage 1 Winner and a Key Stage 2 winner - both winners have received a book and a certificate for their efforts.

The winner in Key Stage One is Olivia M for her wonderful double poster showing animal growth and plant growth. We liked Olivia's design because of her use of technical terms such as 'seed' and 'sapling' - as well as the beautiful presentation.

The winner in Key Stage Two is Ruby S for her informative poster about plant growth; again, lots of technical vocabulary and presentation that most A Level students would be proud of! Congratulations girls and to everyone who took part, the entries were amazing.

Today is Primary School offer day and we hope that your children all received the offer for school places that they and you wanted - if your children are joining our school then we would like to say a huge "Welcome to the Eureka Family!"

Your children will be joining a good school (OfSTED 2018) with a dedicated staff who will ensure that during their time here they will always be safe, happy and comfortable. They will be joining a school where children love to learn and the staff love to teach - and joining a place that has a real family feel and caring ethos - all set in beautiful grounds within a fabulous local community!

We will be getting in touch with all of our new starters in due course and we will be sending out further information once we have returned back to school next week.

If your child didn't get the place that they wanted then the Derbyshire County Council website will tell you more about appeals process (see below):

21/03/2022

As a follow up to British Science Week we have asked the children if they would like to take part in a National competition based around the theme of ‘Growth’ – organised by the British Science Organisation. The challenge is to create a poster that explains a form of growth. This could be showing a simple step by step diagram of how a plant, animal or human grows or it could be a poster explaining growth in a different context such as how a city grows, or how our mind grows, it could even be as big as how the universe grows! No topic is off limits really as long as it links back to growth.

The judges have said that they will be looking at the following when making their decisions:
• Creativity in approach – Innovative angle on the content or creative interpretation of the theme
• Content – Clear, accurate and informative about a STEM topic
• Effective communication – presented and communicated in an engaging way

There are more details about the competition on the British Science Week website.
https://www.britishscienceweek.org/plan-your-activities/poster-competition/
If your child wishes to enter the competition, this can be done either directly through the website or your child can bring their entry into school by Thursday 7th April (I will send them off on your child’s behalf).

Good Morning,

We have updated our Phonics page on our school website to give parents more information about the teaching of Phonics and Early Reading and Writing at Eureka through the use of Bug Club. Although this is primarily aimed at parents of children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 it can also be useful for the parents of older children if their child is being taught phonics in Key Stage 2. We have included a video, how to guides, a glossary, and links to various useful websites for the children to access in their spare time - if they have any! The link to this updated page is below - any further questions you may have regarding phonics then please talk to your child's class teacher or Mr Brazier.
