Mumbles Lighthouse has been guiding mariners safely into Swansea Bay since its completion in 1794. This historic lighthouse, visible from any point along the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay, is a navigational aid and an iconic landmark. Designed by local architect William Jernegan, the lighthouse's construction faced initial setbacks when the first structure collapsed, leading to a restart of the building process in 1793. The lighthouse was the last coal-fired one to be built in Britain, and its unique design features two octagonal towers, one set within the other to form tiers, which initially housed coal fires on each level.

The Mumbles Lighthouse stands 17 meters tall and has a range of 15 nautical miles, with an intensity of 13,700 candela. Its two-tier structure, which initially displayed two open coal fire lights, is a nod to its original purpose of distinguishing it from other lighthouses with single or separate lights. The coal fires were soon replaced with more efficient oil-powered lights, and the lighthouse has since undergone several modernisations, including solarisation in 1995 and the installation of LED lanterns in 2017. The surrounding fort, known as Palmerston Fort, was built in 1860 to defend against potential French invasions.

Today, the Mumbles Lighthouse is automated and monitored from Trinity House's Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex. Visitors can access the lighthouse at low tide, but caution is advised to avoid being trapped by the incoming tide.
