Ho Chi Minh City
Your South East Asian adventure starts in Vietnam’s largest city, a fascinating metropolis full of character, fascinating architecture, fabulous food and friendly locals. You’ll spend three nights here, and there’s a wealth of things to fill your time with. Visit the War Remnants Museum, or head out of the city to the Cu Chi Tunnels, to learn about the effects of the Vietnam War and the lives of the Viet Cong. The city is also full of impressively grand pagodas, designed in an incredibly ornate Chinese style, and lovely French-colonial houses. When you’ve had your fill of sights, head to some of the outer districts to sample real Vietnamese street food - best enjoyed sat roadside on a stool.
Can Tho
Next up is Can Tho, nestled in the southern throes of the Mekong Delta. This riverside town is best known for its floating markets and surrounding mangroves, and the pace of life here is considerably slower than in buzzing Saigon. On one morning of your stay, be sure to hire an early boat to take you to the Cai Rang Floating Market for breakfast (and a spectacular sunrise), where you can grab steaming coffee and bowls of noodle soup whilst floating down the river. You could also take a Sampan tour through the inner mangroves, spend an afternoon at a cacao farm, or admire more traditional pagodas.
Hoi An
A beachside stay in heavenly Hoi An is up next, with more ancient offerings coming your way. Its Old Town is UNESCO-listed in its entirety, and the streets are fascinating to wander around. Be sure to spot the ornate 1700s Japanese Covered Bridge and visit the architecturally stunning Old House of Tan Ky. You’ll find some lovely cultural experiences to be had here, from pottery- and silk-making to cooking classes, and the local residents will be eager to imbibe you with some of their culture. If all of this sounds a little too fast-paced for you, you can enjoy the tranquil surrounds of your luxury resort and its perfectly-placed sandy beach.
Good to know
Please note that your inbound and outbound flights are overnight, so be sure to take this into account when planning the time you'll be away.
