Well done to all involved in acquiring this wonderful piece of Tamworth history 🙏🏻👏

*Amazing News!*

St. Editha's Church has recently been able to acquire an original Edward Burne-Jones painting at auction, which is the original design of the magnificent William Morris stained glass window in the St. George's Chapel at the church.

Painted around 1870, this incredible find, sourced from a private collection, has never before been on public view. Thanks to the generosity of several donors, we are thrilled to be able to bring it home to Tamworth to put on permanent display at St. Editha's.

The painting will be on display at the special "Friends" launch event at St. Editha's on Saturday 15th June, 7pm, after which it will be put on long-term display in Autumn for the whole of Tamworth to enjoy.

Thanks go to the J. W. Pemberton Trust, the Tamworth and District Civic Society, and various individuals for enabling the church to acquire the unique and priceless artwork.

‼️ Due to an exclusive event, Tamworth Castle will be closing early on Sunday 26th May. The Castle will only be open to the public 10am - 11.30am.

We will be open on Monday 27th May as it's half term! Come an experience some Medieval Mayhem and get up close to our medieval weaponry! On daily until Sunday 2 June.

The wonderful beauty of our market town with the history and heritage that Tamworth has, nestled in classic English countryside and yet less than 30 mins from the heart of Birmingham.

🎈 Happy 176th birthday to Tamworth legend Rev William MacGregor (1848-1937)

⭐ One of our town's unsung heroes, MacGregor served to improve the lives of Tamworth people for more than 60 years.

🚰 He campaigned tirelessly for every home to have clean water and sanitation despite the strong opposition from the town’s wealthy inhabitants.

ℹ️ He is also remembered as founder of the co-operative society, chairman of the Tamworth Herald, for starting a free library and coffee house, building the first hospital in Tamworth and building two churches at Glascote and Hopwas. He was most famous for his collection of Egyptology, in fact two Egyptian mummies are buried in Tamworth soil.

📲 Although many years have passed since his death, MacGregor's story lives on through our free 'Tamworth AR Trails' App. He features amongst other notable Tamworth legends, as they describe the history of our own town and the impact in which they had.

We are VERY excited to announce a very special new exhibition coming to the hall very soon..... 'Civil War in the Midlands' ⚔️

The exhibition will focus on the events that took place in the Midlands during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. It will bring to life the stories of forgotten battles, and cast a light on just some of the characters involved in them. 🛡

The exhibition is a collaboration with Living History UK and is expected to launch in June 2024.🚀

📢 Calling for donations of yellow or blue fabric 🟡🔵📢

👑This summer we will be commemorating 1,100 years since Athelstan became the first king of all England. (Athelstan was Lady Aethelflaed’s nephew and ward so was raised by her in Mercia. The statue at the base of our motte depicts them both.)

St Editha’s Church and Tamworth Castle will be hosting a week long festival including Anglo-Saxon living history, community archaeology, talks and lectures, demonstrations and community art

🔵🟡As part of this, we are creating a giant fabric Mercian flag and are looking for donations of yellow or blue fabric to create it. Offcuts are fine. We’d also love to hear from any crafting groups that might be able to help us assemble it. Please tag anyone who may be able to help and get them to email [email protected]

Donations of fabric can be dropped off at the castle or gatehouse during opening hours. Thank you in advance.
