🎤The Battle of the Bands is back, and Tamworth Borough Council are inviting local people to support local young talent for three fantastic evenings of live music.

🎸Tickets are now on sale for what’s going to be an epic competition of local youth musical talent, featuring young bands aged between 13 and 18 years old, from across the region. Perhaps one of the bands will go on to see national or even international fame!

🎤The young musicians will battle it out across two heats to reach the grand finale on Sunday 14 July.

⭐Heat one takes place on Thursday 4 July, featuring young bands Red by Night, Rory and The Revellers, Pulse and Strange Ways.

⭐Heat two takes place on Friday 5 July, featuring Powr, Nausy, Downfall 77, Wanted 94 and Darnford Moors.

⚔️ On this day 1,106 years ago our warrior Queen, Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia died.

ℹ️ At the height of her success, tragedy struck and Aethelflaed fell ill and died on 12 June 918 in Tamworth, probably aged 47 or 48.

⚰️ She was buried in St Oswald's Priory, in Gloucester, where her husband was already buried and which they founded.

🗽 One of her statues (pictured) can be spotted outside Tamworth Railway Station and was erected 6 years ago to commemorate 1,100 years since her death in Tamworth. There are other deptictions of her around the town including within a stained glass window at St Editha's Church and another in Ankerside Shopping Centre, plus another sculpture outside Tamworth Castle.

Great news! Have you seen the beautiful William Morris windows in St Editha's, Tamworth?

*Amazing News!*

St. Editha's Church has recently been able to acquire an original Edward Burne-Jones painting at auction, which is the original design of the magnificent William Morris stained glass window in the St. George's Chapel at the church.

Painted around 1870, this incredible find, sourced from a private collection, has never before been on public view. Thanks to the generosity of several donors, we are thrilled to be able to bring it home to Tamworth to put on permanent display at St. Editha's.

The painting will be on display at the special "Friends" launch event at St. Editha's on Saturday 15th June, 7pm, after which it will be put on long-term display in Autumn for the whole of Tamworth to enjoy.

Thanks go to the J. W. Pemberton Trust, the Tamworth and District Civic Society, and various individuals for enabling the church to acquire the unique and priceless artwork.

2024 marks the 1,100th anniversary of the ascension of Athelstan, King of Mercia, who is considered by many historians as the first King of England. Athelstan was also the nephew and ward of Our Lady of the Mercians, Aethelflaed.

Join us for a week-long festival, from 20-27 July, delivered by and St Editha's, Tamworth Church. The week will include Anglo-Saxon living history, community archaeology, talks and lectures, demonstrations, community art and live music 🏰

As you will be aware, we were recently presented with the LST CAMRA Branch ‘Staffordshire Pub of the Year’ award. 🍺📜
This meant that we progressed to the next stage of competition. Since then, the county judges have been in and out of The Tap and the other branch winning pubs in Staffordshire, making unannounced and anonymous visits and scoring us against a list of strict criteria. 📋✔️
We’ve had many secret visits over the last few months and we are excited to say that the scores are in and we are WINNERS - The Tamworth Tap has once again been judged overall CAMRA Staffordshire Pub of the Year! 🍻👏🏻
This means so much to us. We work tirelessly to evolve, adapt and maintain standards to give you what you want, so to be recognised for this is everything. 🥰

🎉 Happy 44th Birthday to Ankerside Shopping Centre which was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on June 6, 1980.

Retail is a tough industry and times have changed a lot since its opening in 1980. But we are exited to see what shops come to town in the future!

Find out if you can survive the challenges of life in a medieval castle. Weaponry demonstrations will also be delivered by the volunteers.

We've also got the beautiful castle grounds to enjoy with an award-winning playground. Visit the gatehouse for tickets, drinks or snacks.
🎠 Barker's Fun Fair is also currently on in the castle grounds, open daily from 1pm.

You can also collect a free town trail from the gatehouse to discover more about local ceramic artist Edith Gator.

After reaching the finals of ITV's Britain's Got Talent, the D Day Darlings were signed to Sony Music UK. These Forces' favourite sweethearts will bring a selection of popular wartime songs to life in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the D Day Landings along the Normandy Coast during World War II.

Come down to St Editha’s Square for an unforgettable performance that will take you back in time. See you there!
