Yesterday, I led a guided walk to two of the recently-excavated sites near Irishman's Wall, Belstone, as part of the Dartmoor Tors Festival. It was a great turn-out with 40 lovely people attending! I am grateful to Keith Lambeth (Out There On Dartmoor) and Emma Cunis (Dartmoor's Daughter) for their help with the logistics. Proceeds of the walk will go towards the Radiocarbon dating costs so a big thank you to the organisers, Sophie Pearce and Alex Murdin, and to everyone who came along to support it. Great photo by Emma Cunis, with the group standing around the perimeter of the Irishman's Wall stone circle.

A unanimous verdict. A huge relief!!

Today the Supreme Court upheld the legal right to wild camp on certain areas of Dartmoor’s commons.

This is a landmark victory, not just for Dartmoor National Park, but for everyone who has stood up for access rights.

We’re delighted and relieved with today’s result and want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has offered their support during this process.

We’ll keep working closely with commoners, all landowners, local communities, and partners to make sure Dartmoor remains a place for everyone. Where it’s beauty, history and wildlife are protected, and people can continue to enjoy fair access to this special landscape.

If you’re planning a backpack camping trip on Dartmoor it is important to leave no trace and follow the guidance on our website.

A great morning’s networking for the RICS. An engaging route with stops every fifteen minutes or so allowing conversations and connections with different participants while walking.

Great to attend the 'Spring in your step' RICS local member group social on Saturday, up on Dartmoor. Meeting at The Warren House Inn, between Postbridge and Moretonhampstead, this was a great chance to get out, enjoy the fresh air, all whilst having a tour led by Keith Lambeth, who taught u...

Magical moonlight walk in the Taw Valley last night. The night was very still so despite cool temperatures we remained comfortable. Crystal streams and hidden circles while the moon danced with the clouds. Thanks for coming guys.

A beautiful morning on the moor with a group of French Students. Among other things we discussed swaling and the way that burning back hunting areas was one of the earliest human modifications to the landscape. A polite and engaged group and good weather. Nice combination.

Just had the statistics through for last years rescue team call outs.

Just had the statistics through for last years rescue team call outs.

2024 saw us responding to 40 callouts, the highest total we've ever had in a year.
37 were deployed and 3 callouts stood down en route.

With over 8,000 volunteer hours from our team members. This includes 1,062 incident hours, over 4,500 hours of training and the remaining hours spent fundraising or other operational tasks to keep the team running.

Our busiest months were May, June, October and November, which were all equivalent to 2 callouts a week.

The most common injury we attended for callouts was lower leg or back injuries in 2024.

Furthest callout attended by our Search Dogs: Brecon Beacons
Did you know Search Dogs and Water-qualified team members are considered national assets and can be deployed anywhere in England & Wales.

The longest callout was 8 hours and 30 minutes.
The fastest callout was 22 minutes.
The average length of callouts was 4 hours.

7 of our callouts were in urban areas, 1 of which was to support the evacuation in Plymouth due to the unexploded WWII device.

In 2025, we aim to replace our aging Land Rover (Dart 5.1) at 32 years old, her age is beginning to show.
Having spent her entire life in operational service within Mountain Rescue England & Wales, she has had an exciting life as part of MREW, having been deployed to two unexploded WWII devices, attended a lot of Ten Tors events and clocked in many hours on callouts
Dart 5.1 will hold a special place in our hearts and is a big piece of history for MREW.

Can you help us and fundraise for your local Mountain Rescue team?

We are on call 24/7/365 to help those in need. If you would like to donate or find out more about the team and safety advice for Dartmoor, please go to the link below.
Thank you.
