Just a 15 minute drive, or nice cycle ride from the cottage, we had the pleasure to try Hundred Acre Kitchen for breakfast. Under the backdrop of Lilleshall Monument the coffee, food, service and surroundings were fantastic. Even a roaring log burner inside. Definitely recommended from us

“Situated in the leafy countryside just 45 minutes from Birmingham is a 'pretty' market town rated one of the 'nicest places' to live in the West Midlands. With it's picturesque high street, independent shops and range of pubs, residents say there aren't many better places to live than Newport.

The town, with a population of 11,387, is located in Shropshire, seven miles north of Telford and 35 northwest of Birmingham, close to the Staffordshire border. While the town is highly-rated, Newport is also surrounded by swathes of greenery, with many scenic walks on its doorstep including The Wrekin.”

With a picturesque town centre and a 'lovely community', Newport in Telford & Wrekin borough, Shropshire, was ranked the third nicest place to live in the West Midlands

If you're looking for somewhere in the world to visit in 2024, travel trade organisation Abta has named 10 destinations to consider - and the list includes Shropshire.

Shropshire has been named on a list as one of 10 “destinations to watch” worldwide for holidaymakers this year.

Move over Maldives: Shropshire is tipped for a tourist boom

The county’s picturesque villages and foodie hubs have won it a place on Abta’s hot list
Ironbridge’s eponymous landmark is a marvel of 18th-century engineering

Ben Clatworthy, Travel Correspondent
Thursday January 04 2024, 7.10pm, The Times
It may be celebrated as the birthplace of the industrial revolution but these days it is arguably better known for its bracing hill walks, castles and pretty timber-framed villages.

Now Shropshire has joined the likes of Mauritius, with its seven-coloured earths in Chamarel, and Zambia, home of the breathtaking Victoria Falls, in being named one of the “destinations to watch” this year.

It is the first time Abta, the travel trade association, has included a domestic location in its annual report of the cities, regions and countries tipped for a tourist boom in the year ahead.

Other destinations on the list include the Caribbean island of Aruba, which since last year has been served by British Airways, and Vietnam, which has extended its visa waiver for Britons to 45 days. No new flights or changes in immigration policy were needed for Shropshire.

The landlocked county won its place on the list as an unsung hero that is often overlooked by domestic tourists who hammer down the M5 bound for Devon and Cornwall, or steam through en route to the picturesque coastline of north Wales.

Abta spared no hyperbole, praising Shropshire as a “rural gem” with “delightful towns including Ludlow, which is regarded as a foodie paradise”.

It points “history lovers” to Coalbrookdale in the Ironbridge Gorge with its eponymous bridge — the first built in the world and famed as one of the birthplaces of the 18th century industrial revolution — while sports lovers should visit the pretty town of Much Wenlock, which in 1850 held a forerunner to the modern Olympic Games.

Other highlights are Bridgnorth, the first stop on the Severn Valley Railway, which Abta says will appeal to children of all ages thanks to the “high and low town connected by a funicular railway which makes for a great day out”.

Ludlow Castle has long attracted visitors to the market town, which has also gained traction as a dining destination

A spokeswoman for the trade body said the purpose of the report was to “inspire people’s holiday choices for the year ahead”. She added: “We aim to include a varied list of locations and holiday styles, including places which may not necessarily be front of mind.

“Shropshire has much to offer domestic tourists, including areas of outstanding natural beauty, lively market towns and rich history.”

Other destinations include Albania, which Abta said had hugely improved its tourism infrastructure in recent years, the Spanish region of Extremadura and Saxony in Germany.

The list’s release comes in advance of “sunshine Saturday”, which falls in the first week of January and is typically one of the busiest days for the travel trade, which coined the term. The industry has found that the volume of searches on tour operator websites builds gradually during the day, with the number of bookings peaking in the evening between 8pm and 10pm, once children are in bed.
