Guaranteed to put a smile on my face in the depths of January, when the lovely scent from these unobtrusive yellow flowers on bare stems catches me unawares as I walk past. Appropriately known as Wintersweet, I can never resist cutting a few stems to enjoy it wafting through the house too.

Taking inspiration from a post this week by the wonderful - one of my photography heroes - that made me stop on my walk and take a closer look at some of the individual leaves on trees that are looking incredible this Autumn. These are all from a single Common Dogwood, a plant we use in all our hedgerow restorations here as it a food source for about 65 different types of insect. Plus it's kaleidoscope of colours at this time of year is just amazing. Do check out David's photo that is a squillion times better than ours and properly showcases nature's full autumnal palette.

Relishing the final hurrah of our dahlias that have escaped the ravages of the rain and first few frosts. Just when I thought they were over, the brighter, calmer, drier weather this week has granted them a reprieve and they are celebrating with floral flourish for us to enjoy. Long live dahlias!

And suddenly, the sun is shining again - so welcome after the wet this week. Celebrating with renewed appreciation of the abundance of autumn flowers that have escaped the deluge (mainly) unscathed.

Harvesting baskets of helichrysums in the sunshine today. . Also known as ever-lasting flowers (a bit of an exaggeration, but pretty good for a couple of years) or straw flowers, we're going to dry them to use the flowers for some much needed colour through the winter.

Planning to spend today in my happy place, pottering about in the cutting garden by the greenhouse. Our last flower course of the season is being held here next month with lovely Sarah of Join her to learn the skills of traditional flower pressing, filling a press to take home and creating a floral artwork. A party to remember. Huge thanks to the wonderful team here for helping get everything ready, Jan from the always fabulous for (and I quote from the many thank you letters saying the same thing) "the best food at any 21st ever" and the lovely .willoughby.photography for the amazing photos that captured the evening perfectly.
